This is a good book if all you want are examples of elegant script, but it is not a book to actually teach how-to do elegant script. Therefore, I was somewhat disappointed in the book, but will use it for inspiration.

The Universal Penman is a wonderful book to pour over when you want to see a variety of flourishes and Copperplate script. If you do any calligraphy, then this book is a great addition to your reference library. You can dissect the examples and see how to incorporate them into your own work. Or you can just admire the sheer beauty of the handwritten word.

George Bickham's monumental work , both the artwork and calligraphy is stunning. It's full of writing samples from the classical period of round hand calligraphy. You can just admire the sheer beauty of the handwritten word. George Bickham the Elder (1684-1758) was the finest calligraphic engraver of his day. He was also an excellent penman, as 18 of these plates show, but he employed 25 leading writing masters to compose the bulk of this, his best known work, a collection of writing exemplars which helped to popularize the English Round Hand script in the 18th century.

As Philip Hofer writes in the forward, "Altogether, there are many reasons why every intelligent person should take a renewed interest in good handwriting." Even if you're not a calligrapher, you should buy this book simply because it is BEAUTIFUL. The work done by George Bickham inside is stunning--both the artwork and calligraphy. Seriously, if you have any interest whatsoever in lettering, you will love this book.

I have enjoyed this book thoroughly. I love the different scripts and flourishes and the meaningful quotations. I use it at least 3 or 4 times a week to practice my copperplate and Spencerian writing. I would highly recommend it.

Not what I was looking for.

if you are interested in Calligraphy, they you need to have this book. The examples are beautiful and they provide an excellent guide for students of the art.

One of the best resources for pointed pen lettering that exists. Loaned my first copy and had to replace it.

Review

“The world needs more yoga, but not just the physical practice! I have found that the lessons of acceptance, forgiveness, and non-violence have profound effects on my life off the mat. Rina makes these connections understandable, relatable, and fun. The Yoga Mind is the perfect introduction for beginners, in addition to a simple new way to look at these ancient teachings for more 'experienced' yogis!”— Seane Corn, yoga teacher and co-founder of Off the Mat, Into the World "Yoga has power beyond the physical practice, but it can be difficult to share all the philosophy in the limited time we have on the mat. Rina’s book not only explains this power in simple terms, but is also fun to read! Rina is a great person who lives yoga on and off the mat. This book is the missing piece for beginners and seasoned practitioners alike to deepen their practice through exploration of yoga’s foundation."—Kim Paulsen, General Manager of Yoga Journal “Before this I did not believe it possible to laugh, learn and then live yoga from reading one book. Rina brilliantly demystifies the subject so that anyone can thoroughly understand the ABC’s of yoga. The Yoga Mind is an epic contribution to the field of yoga, saving people countless hours and dollars who want to be educated in the arena without having to ‘do it all’.”—Eric Paskel, philosopher and yoga teacher “Like Rina herself, this beautiful and approachable exploration of yoga is full of positive energy, dynamic creative expression, and deep and practical wisdom offered with love. For those just beginning their heroic yoga journey and anyone looking for an inspiring everyday handbook on the practical application of yoga in real life, Rina offers a fresh and needed voice to uplift and encourage. The pathway to real transformation lies within; thanks to Rina, it is now made accessible to all.”—David Lipsius, President & CEO of Yoga Alliance and Yoga Alliance Foundation “Rina’s down-to-earth style of writing and practical approach offers a fresh and playful energy to the often-misunderstood and abstract topic of yoga philosophy.”—Nicolai Bachman, Sanskrit scholar “Rina is an amazing teacher and has the gift of explaining things in simple, fun, and yet very profound ways. She teaches from her heart and you will feel that connection when you learn with her about the philosophy behind this physical practice that can be a life-changer and will empower you in all areas of your life!”—Marco Antonio Regil, TV host and public speaker “If you’re ready to deepen your yoga practice and move it from the mat into everyday life, The Yoga Mind, a guidebook of ancient wisdom for the modern-day yogi, expertly distilled by Rina Jakubowicz, will show you how. Approachable, accessible, and comprehensive, this book explores everything from yoga postures to principles and offers thought-provoking exercises that will lead you to a greater understanding of yoga―and yourself.”—Amy Weiss, author of Crescendo “Rina’s book gives a new approach to your yoga practice―one that includes soul, intellect and body all in harmony and unity through an inner journey to connect with yourself and others.”—Pablo Sainz Villegas, world-class guitarist

I am a multiple decade yogi, practitioner and teacher, I am learning so much with this book. I appreciate that it is is mainstream lingo so I am able to just read parts of it to my students and they too understand it.

I wanted to learn more about the mental part of yoga to go along with the physical part. This book was GREAT for that. Easy to read, short descriptions, more like an overview. For more of a detailed history, another book will be necessary, but I learned a LOT that I can incorporate into my yoga practice.

A great introduction for those looking to learn about what yoga means, the eight limbs of yoga, and some of the fundamental tenets. Each one is a short chapter. Rina’s style keeps each philosophy very simple. She has a practice for each philosophy which consists of a pose with a meditation. She also includes an applicable quote with each chapter. I use this book for my yoga classes all the time.

Love this book! All yogis who truly want to practice yoga as it is meant to be should read this book!

I keep this in my work bag for a few minutes of review, contemplation during my work breaks

I really like how it breaks everything down so that I can understand

I think the style of this writing just doesn't appeal to me. I had expected a bit more practical information I could use in my practice, but haven't really found that.

This is such an amazing book on yoga philosophy. Easy to read and perfectly portioned, perfect introduction to the true wisdom behind yoga.

For the price (I got this book quite discounted) it was worth the purchase. I bought it for our 11 month old (at the time) who loves tractors! This is a bit advanced for his age as it labels the specific types of tractors. For now, we just say "green tractor" or "red tractor." Maybe for an older child (2 or 3) this would be more age appropriate for a quick "car ride" type book. I highly recommend the large "Big Tractor" book in the shape of a tractor as the best tractor book for a 1 year old.

#514,202 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The time is 1935 and the main character is nineteen-year-old Mariella Bennet, a young woman trying to keep her family afloat after the death of her father, a struggling fisherman in Key West. She gambles, steals, and does whatever odd jobs she can for the rent money to keep her depressed mother and two little sisters in their small house. Eventually, Mariella gets a job as a maid in the Hemingway household due to her chance meetings with EMH around town and his attraction for her and her adeptness at standing up to the already iconic writer. The prologue begins in 1961 a couple of days after Hemingway's death. Mariella is introduced with graying hair and is fishing with her son Jake on their boat Corrida. Of course her son was named after Jake Barnes from The Sun Also Rises and her boat's name is homage to Hemingway's love of bullfighting. As an Hemingway aficionado, these details are the things I enjoyed about Ms. Robuck's tale. The prologue also has Mariella thinking to herself that her son is just like his father. I was hooked then, wanting to know if Ms. Robuck weaves her tale making Hemingway the boy's father.I highlighted many good passages and quotes from the book. Here are a few:"She remembered when Hemingway had planted a banyan at his house and told her its parasitic roots were like human desire. At the time she's thought it romantic. She hadn't understood his warning.""That night at the rum bar, Mariella watched Papa while she smoked. He still complained about the locals, but spent more time entertaining his audience with tales of the fish that grew more dramatic with each retelling. As she stubbed out her third cigarette, she acknowledged her increasing disdain for him. His endless boasting around the rich men; his foul, racist language; his complaints about critics; his overblown stories of game hunting in Africa; his flirtation with Jinny. The way he got off on Mariella's attraction for him around his wife. It diminished him. He used to seem so authentic, but lately she found him replaced by a sunburned, overfed legend of his own making. She felt strongly that he was in character, forever trying to hold up his image for the men around him.""He looked like a bull struck by a sword at a bullfight, emblazoned with anger and ready to maul.""Mariella looked at the people in the room and loved them deeply. In a rush, she felt the physical melancholy of vacation's end settle over her. Its shadow fell over everyone in the room. She knew all these people would start leaving, and they would have to go back to work, and she would be without Gavin during the week, and hurricane season would rush into full swing. Instead of the joy and expectation of time left on holiday, she felt the dread of numbered days, and even though she missed her family greatly, she knew that these people would never again be together, like this, on an island at the edge of the world."I appreciated Ms. Robuck's research and her historical accuracy. The main characters were there, including Hemingway's good friends Charles and Lorine Thompson and John and Katy Dos Passos, his wife, Pauline, his kids Bumby, Patrick, and Gregory, Ada the nanny, Toby the caretaker, and Grant and Jane Mason. All were portrayed as I have read about them again and again. Ms. Robuck also added her own characters: Gavin, the World War I vet with whom Mariella falls in love, Mariella's Cuban mother Eva, her sisters Estelle and Lulu, John, another veteran who had lost his legs at the Argonne, Nicholas the neighbor, and others.Another aspect of this book I appreciated was Ms. Robuck's honest portrayal of Hemingway. Through Mariella and others, she exposes his darker sides, as well as his kindness and generosity and genuine love of his community. We see his humor, intelligence, and physical prowess, but also we see his need for praise, his inflated ego, his callousness at times, and his rationalization of bad behavior. The character that never gets much sympathy is poor Pauline, but she does have some redeeming qualities in the end. We see how her relationship with Hemingway could have slowly deteriorated and how she seemed to have no real sense of self. But there is so much we can never know about Pauline since she died suddenly, 10 years before Hemingway committed suicide.I had forgotten about the hurricane that hit the Keys in 1935, bringing the most devastation to the upper keys. The novel reminded me of how tragic this hurricane was for the islands and how Hemingway wrote an article about the governmental neglect of the veterans that were working on the railroad at the time.Ms. Robuck brought the story full circle in her epilogue. Letters were how this story ended--letters between Mariella and Hemingway--just like the thousands of letters sent back and forth between Hemingway and his friends and family his entire life.

Robuck is becoming one of my guilty pleasures...almost. The problem is when the truth is sacrificed to develop story line. I know that this is sometimes necessary when writing a piece of fiction, and I do have to remind myself of that fact while I am reading (especially as I need to put them into different compartments in my brain). Having said that, the beauty of the writing is that the writer is able to take that which is known and create scenarios for explaining that which we do not know-- it is left to the judgment of the reader to decide if this is plausible or not. On more than one occasion I found myself questioning what I know of Hemingway from the works of others and trying to believe what Robuck had written, and I just couldn't fathom his character responding that way. The story is developed through the eyes of a young girl, Mariella, and just as in "Call Me Zelda", the life of this narrator becomes just as important as the larger-than-life person she interacts with. In fact, I would say that Mariella's story is more interesting and has greater depth. At times I questioned many of Mariella's actions, mainly in regard to her age. Although near the end of the book I had to remind myself that even though the author treats her as an adult, she really is not. It is easier to see how Mariella could have developed an infatuation with Hemingway (especially as he encouraged it)...a young girl recovering from the loss of her father would have been vulnerable to the attentions of an intelligent, famous, older man. I also enjoyed the read because I could easily envision several of the spots in the Keys that are referenced--which was the main reason for purchasing it.

I expected to read about Hemingway's lifestyle in Key West. I was not disappointed.I expected to read about the lifestyle of the poor in Key West. I was not disappointed. What I did not expect was a very graphic description of the very first category 5 hurricane to make landfall in the US. I found this part of the book to be extremely interesting. I like the way the author brings to life a very violent storm and the politics surrounding the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.

The only reason this book does not 5 stars in my opinion is that there were small inaccuracies regarding Key West. For instance, when Mariella looks out at sunset key (it was not sunset key when the story took place). However, these small inaccuracies did not take away from the story itself which was a fine and moving one. And other than these little mistakes in setting that only one that lives in the Keys would notice, the story did give the reader a very realistic picture of Key West in the days of Hemingway's residence on the island otherwise. Of course the action was all made up, but very plausible based on facts from the days. And of course, if you read of the Labor Day hurricane you will see that it was indeed as horrific as what was described here. A good read and one that any Hemingway aficionado will enjoy.

Wow, I did not expect to love this book. I thought it would be a trashy look at some fictional romance but it is a thoughtful and respectful look at EH. It also gets into the dynamics of fame, literature, the Depression and a failing marriage. Robuck did her homework. I have read everything published on and by EH and found her accurate.I read The Paris Wife and loved it. This book reminds me of that one, but set later in Hem's life and in the tropics. I have been to KW recently and can "see" the town she describes.I am not quite finished with this book but wanted to share my thoughts. This is a fun, smart book with sharp dialogue. You will like it even if you have never read one of EH's books. Enjoy!

Loved Erika Robuck's book, Hemingway's Girl! The historical fiction was delves into Ernest Hemingway's character! Looking forward to reading another book published by Erika Robuck!

Not Quite Narwhal, by Jessie Sima

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—The "not quite" narwhal in this story is Kelp, an adorable unicorn, born underwater and living with an equally adorable school of narwhals. His tusk is kind of short, he's not a very good swimmer, and narwhal food is just gross, but his life is pretty great. Kelp is accepted by the narwhals, and he accepts himself as he is. But one day, a strong current drops him on a beach, where he learns to walk (after hysterically imitating a crab and a frog, he finds that a turtle is the best model) and discovers a whole herd of "land narwhals" who look just like him. Little Kelp's new life is awash in rainbows and unicorns—he almost doesn't want to go home. Of course, home isn't quite the same after his adventure, but luckily everyone is on his side. The narwhals and unicorn meet at the beach, and Kelp ends his story in the best of both worlds. Sima draws digitally on a Wacol drawing tablet and has created charming undersea and overland settings on full-bleed spreads. Her narrative is short, with a storyteller's pacing and winning characters, resulting in an appealing book. Read it for a whimsical storytime or provide some text-to-text connections for older students with Amy Krouse Rosenthal's Uni the Unicorn and Bob Shea's Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great. VERDICT Useful for ELA curricula and sure to circulate, this title is highly recommended.—Lisa Lehmuller, Paul Cuffee Maritime Charter School, Providence

How is it even POSSIBLE that this is Jessie Sima's very first book? (I literally just re-read the book flap to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Yep, "very first book.") The text of Not Quite Narwhal is simple and lovely. The art is gorgeous and fun and sweet and charming. The story is be-who-you-are awesome and will surely resonate with big kids and little kids alike. Side note: I'm a children's book editor and my only wish is that I'd published this book myself!I received my copy tonight and while I had intended to keep it, I've decided to bring it directly to my nieces' house tomorrow. I am positive the 3-year-old will love it. I am positive the 6-year-old will love it. I am positive the 9-year-old will love it. (Not to be gender-normative. If I had a young nephew in that house, I am positive he would love it, too!) So here I am back on Amazon to order a new copy for myself.Brava to Jessie Sima on this wonderful book that feels as if it was written for us land narwhals who always thought we were sea unicorns. 5 VERY SPARKLY STARS!UPDATE 2/27/17: Nieces' review: "This book is AMAZING!" (I will note that the 3-year-old was very concerned about who Kelp's mommy was. So we decided it was the guitar-playing unicorn.) :)

Really, I should be giving this book five RAINBOWS. A delightful tale of being caught between two worlds and finding one's place. A perfect gift for children of all ages who love narwhals and unicorns, and, let's be honest, who doesn't?

So very cute!! My daughter (8) read the first page and then immediately called her older brother over so she could read to him and show him the pictures. The illustration of baby Kelp made her melt, and she loved the happy message of love and acceptance. :) Can't wait for more from Jessie!

Got this book for my 6yo niece for Christmas (yeah I shop early hehe) and it is adorable with a wonderful message.Very few words on pages which have them and when the characters speak their talking is done in speach bubbles the way a comic book would do it while the 'story' part is handled like comic book narration. The images are every bit as sweet and whimsical as the cover art and that cover is pretty typical of the level of detail you can expect. The message or lesson of the story is very simple and ignores all the complexities we adults know exist--the people who love you already love you for who you are but you can still love new friends too.Additional messages you can point out are how brave little Kelp (the protagonist) was, how it was alright that he did not like some foods which he still had to eat, that he worked hard and did not give up when I was trying to learn something new and that he thought about his problem then came up with a solution which helped everyone.

Not Quite Narwhal begins with a dazzling cover that glitters and sparkles. Inside, a harmonious blend of brilliant colors depicted in soft hues portray an enchanting array of creatures and places: rainbow fish and silver-white jellyfish, flitting through a pale blue sea; round white eyes, floating in the darkness of night; and vibrant butterflies flitting over jade colored fields.Kelp is a darling unicorn with his turquoise hair, bubblegum pink nose, and spotted rump. Whether he's wearing floaties in the sea, leaping like a frog on land, or splashing around beneath a rainbow, Kelp is the cutest not-quite-narwhal. His journey is visually gratifying as he ventures from the cozy, lavender confines of the shell he lives in beneath the sea to a sun-dappled forest. He treks through a moonlit night with twinkling stars, to a rainbow laden field where butterflies flit and flowers sprout in red and pink, yellow and purple. After his sojourn on land, Kelp is confronted with a difficult question:"Did he want to be a land narwhal with the unicorns . . .Or a sea unicorn with the narwhals?Kelp couldn't decide."Touching on identity and fitting in vs. standing out, Kelp is the perfect role model for learning to love oneself and appreciating that our individual traits make each of us unique and special. With a heartfelt message, ravishing illustrations, and a sprinkle of humor, Not Quite Narwhal is a must have.

When I was a mother of a very young child in my mid-30s, I started reading picture books with stories to my son when he was about 4 months old. The first time we read a story picture book, we only made it to page 2 ;-). However, we perserved and soon we were able to enjoy a whole picture book story together. In fact, reading a picture book with mom or dad, squished In a big comfy chair, became a favorite activity. My son's taste in books to be listened to (versus books to be chewed on) was for stories with some physical action on the part of the characters, some silliness, and a little bit of repetitive text (like the chorus of a song). He's grown up now so I cannot test this picture book on him anymore but I think that toddler would have like this book.Kelp is a sweet character. His narwhal family are loving. His land based unicorn friends are loving. And there is a happy ending. The last picture is fun, showing all kinds of activities being played. There's food in the story too, another good thing.I could read this five times in a row to a toddler, no problem ;-) !

I bought his for my sons yes it’s a bit more of a girly book ,but we have a ongoing joke in our family that mom (me) says Narwhals do not exist and unicorns do. My boys think it’s hilarious so that’s why I keep it up. This book being about a unicorn that thinks it was a Narwhal just continues my joke :-) my boys enjoyed it! And the illustrations are very nice. It is a seriously cute book.

Bah! I read The Convent’s Secret way too fast. I swear, one minute I opened my Kindle to read and the next, I was done. Now I have to wait until the next book comes out. There has to be a legit word or group of words that describes these flu-like symptoms a reader gets during the wait between books in a series.Series sickness maybe? When is the next darn book coming out syndrome?Of course, C.J. Archer ended this addition of the Glass and Steele series with a moment that had me giddy as a girl and freaking livid, almost ugly crying, that it was over. For me, The Covent’s Secret read differently than the others. There wasn’t nearly as much action and adventure, but the story seemed more solid. I think it’s because I felt the other ones had scenes and dialogue that really didn’t need to be there; it was extra fun stuff to read. This one didn’t have those scenes; every single scene felt like it belonged. I enjoyed it immensely.Matt’s reason for adventuring to London has been resolved in this one. Well, as resolved as it can be. There are only a few things left to clean up. A realization that leaves me dreading the possibility that the next book will be the last in this series.

I have read all these books. After book number 4, I was getting impatient for the story to wrap up. It seemed like things were being drawn out beyond what was necessary to get to the main objective, the plot was getting thin. But I knew there were five books, so at the end of this one, I was waiting for the HEA....and, denied. Again.WTH?If the author had wanted to write a huge series for these people to go through, solving magical crimes in each one, she could easily have done that AFTER their personal problems were solved. But this is just an annoying TEASE.If this story goes beyond book six, I’m done.I will literally turn to the last page of book six, and if the story isn’t over, I’m not reading any more.Just an author’s bid to make more money without anything new to say. Cheap.

Each progressive book in this series is more boring than the last. Nothing is resolved, there are just different (dragged out) obstacles here and there. I expected more from the author of the Ministry of Curiosities series. This series is basically just one extremely long story and shouldn’t have been more than (at the max) two books. It feels more like an author being greedy than an attempt at writing something good. Some of the ongoing nonsense doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.*Major Spoilers*Why does she stick around when she supposedly agrees she can’t be with him? Just to torture herself? (He doesn’t need her there just to save him because anyone else could do the same.) She may have a lease on her place, but that will only last so long if she can’t cancel it. She should have enough money to be able to stay somewhere else til then. Why is he agreeing to marry his cousin??? Her mistake wasn’t his fault, and he especially doesn’t owe anything to the family he just found out about and that has been mean and manipulative to him. He expects the h to share everything with him, but he tries to keep it secret that he agreed to marry his cousin. He obviously doesn’t love the h and is just stringing her along. Then, just because he’s upset, he goes off to get drunk. That’s just cheating in a story, and shouldn’t be happening to a character you’re supposed to believe in and trust. Someone who gets drunk to hide away from things that bother him is going to be drunk all the time and is Not a hero. She’s refusing him because of what people will think? That’s BS and means she doesn’t love him. How can she care more for the aunt that says she’s not good enough for him than the man she supposedly loves? How can she put up with the horrible belittling woman, let alone like her? The author has changed her from being a strong woman into a wimpy girl. And everything is moot if they go to the US like he keeps talking about. There won’t be anyone to disparage her there. Same goes for the magic. There’s no reason to stick around where she’s known and will be harassed. Planning on leaving solves two big problems. So, in conclusion, she doesn’t love him enough to not care what others think, and he doesn’t love her enough to not marry his cousin. (Ick!) The author has turned both main characters into spineless wimps. I haven’t even finished this story yet, and it (plus the other books in this series) is making me so irritated that I had to put it down. I am truly disappointed in this author.Addendum: I finally finished the story. And was sorry I did. My exact first thought was: Stupid Stupid Ending. *More Spoilers* he gets shot (again!) and she just goes off with the shooter? He no longer has anything to threaten her with! His big threat is that he’ll shoot her or the other guy, but he can’t shoot either or he loses the ability to get what he wants. Thoroughly stupid, which she isn’t supposed to be. Then instead of fighting him she goes off with him as a weak pathetic little thing. Ugh!I did like the watch scene, but then the story went back to stupidity and a cliffhanger. How in the world would his uncle get hold of ANY kind of threat that would force him to marry his cousin. WTF! He’s still keeping secrets and won’t tell her what’s going on, which is totally wrong if it has to do with her. He and his uncle haven’t known each other very long, and the male lead is supposed to be this sure, strong, independent man that won’t take bull from anyone. And how can this supposed man tell her he’s going to marry her when he’s promised to someone else? How can she be happy overhearing him not caring enough to disentangle himself from his cousin, but letting her believe that they’ll still be married? He’s just obviously duplicitous and has no honor. I am just disgusted with this. This review started out at three stars, but the more I read the lower the rating went. It actually deserves a negative number for the garbage it is.

Oh the tension, the suspense! Stayed up to read it because I couldn’t put it down. India’s secret is almost out and I can tell it will cause more problems and heartaches. Lots of action, romance, and magic. I think this is my favorite of the series so far, and that’s saying a lot. I like the side plot stories she’s developing, even a possible new suitor for India (although we all know there is no one for her but Matt). Ms. Archer has never steered her readers wrong, so I’ll trust that she gets India and Matt out if any trouble she puts them in and make them better for it. Read it now!I don’t know how I’ll wait until next September when the new installment comes out.

I was really hoping this would be the last book in the series because I'm tired of how long this is dragging on. I've been spoiled by the Freak House series which has an HEA in every book. That being said, this series is excellent, with lots of mysterious characters, clean romance, plot twists and action. For me, Matts constant illness set a rather depressing tone for these 5 books, particularly book 4, but hopefully that will change as Matt and India get ever closer to their goal of finding the magician Doctor. I was relieved to see some questions have been answered in this book and hope book 6 will find everything resolved in a happy fashion.

Review

"Emily Paster’s The Joys of Jewish Preserving is a jewel of a book.  Clearly and appetizingly she tells the tales of pickles and preserves, both sweet and savory, from pomegranate paste to prune lekvah." - Joan Nathan, author of Jewish Cooking in America and King Solomon's Table"To survive for thousands of years, often on the move and often living in inhospitable places, the Jews had their religion, their rituals, and their foods - and all three required adaptation and preservation. Thank you, Emily Paster, for reminding us that to preserve a food is to preserve a tradition, a culture, and a people. Your book has been a joy to read and your recipes will be a joy to follow." - - Mark Russ Federman, Russ and Daughters, New York"This is the book I have dreamed of for years! Emily Paster has flung open the larder of traditional and innovative multicultural Jewish pickles and preserves. Only a well-seasoned, well-traveled balabusta like Paster could have delivered this book. It will engage, enrich, and nourish anyone with an interest in home preservation and Middle Eastern, North African, or Eastern European cooking." - Karen Solomon, author of Jam It, Pickle it, Cure It"Emily Paster serves up a delicious collection of recipes whose flavors and stories are rich in heritage and culture. Her recipes preserve an important tradition and show how that tradition is alive and evolving today." - Jenn Louis, chef/owner, Lincoln (Portland, Oregon), and author of Pasta by Hand"Emily Paster taps into the bright, briny, and full-flavored potential of old-world food preservation, while expanding our understanding of what it means to ‘eat Jewish.'" - Leah Koenig, author of Modern Jewish Cooking"The Joys of Jewish Preserving is a buoyant and useful exploration of the Jewish preserving tradition that manages to be both modern and rooted in age-old culture. It should be a mandatory addition to anyone’s collection of books on preserving." - Marisa McClellan, author of Food in Jars"The Joys of Jewish Preserving is the most exciting resource in my pantry! Because pickles and jams were such an important part of my early food memories, I cannot wait to update them in my professional kitchen and my home cupboard with the help of Emily Paster’s incredible book." - Michael Solomonov, co-owner and chef, Zahav (Philadelphia), and author of Zahav: A World of Israeli

You don't have to be Jewish to enjoy Emily Paster's "The Joys of Jewish Preserving." Once again, the author offers lots of wonderful recipes in such an accessible book that I, for one, almost forgot how thorough and well researched it is. There is *so* much here, and it's *so* easy to navigate. Jewish or not, I think readers will appreciate the fascinating historical and cultural nuggets that we may well have missed before. This is an ideal entry for any synagogue's Hanukkah Book Fair!

This is a wonderfully useful, entertaining, and informative cookbook. To me, it is more than a cookbook. The author is clearly knowledgeable and has done extensive research, and more than that, the recipes and writings come straight from her heart. All through the book, I can feel the loving influence of those who have cooked and taught the author how to cook. Joy is not only in the title, but throughout the book. Although it is clearly about preserving foods in the Jewish tradition, both Ashenazy and Sephardic, there is plenty here for non-Jewish cooks as well. The recipes are interesting, very complete. and easy to follow. Bst of all, the author includes a final chapter that shares recipes for showcasing the pickles, jams, and other preserved foods.

Emily Paster's book, The Joys of Jewish Preserving is a true delight. She teaches us the tricks and hints behind the traditions of her family, making everything approachable and taking away our fears. If you have wanted to try preserving foods and making jams, this is the book for you! Gorgeous photos by Leigh Olson enhance and entice us, making the recipes even more appealing. This is a beautiful book and one that will have well-worn pages in no time as you make recipe after recipe for your family and friends.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1558328750/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_0Learning more about 25% of my heritage combined with some wonderful recipes was both interesting and educational. I love that the author also explained the geographic food availability differences of regional traditions. I first heard her interview on NPR and after getting one copy for my family, I also got a second copy to send to newly found cousins. (luckily they love researching genealogy).

The Joys of Jewish Preserving is a book for everyone who likes to cook from scratch at home. It offers contemporary recipes for classic Jewish flavors. Canners will love the diversity of ideas for both sweet and savory preserved foods. The final chapter, "Use Your Preseves," ties it all together. The research behind each recipe and the stunning photography elevate the reader's experience.

Emily has delicious recipes and wonderful stories. Great for first-time preservers and those of us who have been doing it for a while. The links to Judaism make it a treasure and a lovely gift for newlyweds.

Terrific book--a great read and tons of terrific recipes that intrigued an expert like my husband and still feel accessible to a novice like me. I also appreciated the inclusion of Sephardic traditional foods. We're excited to try many of these this holiday season!

This is a great book for a preserver who is looking for something extra with a historical link. Good reading and some good ideas.
