From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—The "not quite" narwhal in this story is Kelp, an adorable unicorn, born underwater and living with an equally adorable school of narwhals. His tusk is kind of short, he's not a very good swimmer, and narwhal food is just gross, but his life is pretty great. Kelp is accepted by the narwhals, and he accepts himself as he is. But one day, a strong current drops him on a beach, where he learns to walk (after hysterically imitating a crab and a frog, he finds that a turtle is the best model) and discovers a whole herd of "land narwhals" who look just like him. Little Kelp's new life is awash in rainbows and unicorns—he almost doesn't want to go home. Of course, home isn't quite the same after his adventure, but luckily everyone is on his side. The narwhals and unicorn meet at the beach, and Kelp ends his story in the best of both worlds. Sima draws digitally on a Wacol drawing tablet and has created charming undersea and overland settings on full-bleed spreads. Her narrative is short, with a storyteller's pacing and winning characters, resulting in an appealing book. Read it for a whimsical storytime or provide some text-to-text connections for older students with Amy Krouse Rosenthal's Uni the Unicorn and Bob Shea's Unicorn Thinks He's Pretty Great. VERDICT Useful for ELA curricula and sure to circulate, this title is highly recommended.—Lisa Lehmuller, Paul Cuffee Maritime Charter School, Providence

How is it even POSSIBLE that this is Jessie Sima's very first book? (I literally just re-read the book flap to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. Yep, "very first book.") The text of Not Quite Narwhal is simple and lovely. The art is gorgeous and fun and sweet and charming. The story is be-who-you-are awesome and will surely resonate with big kids and little kids alike. Side note: I'm a children's book editor and my only wish is that I'd published this book myself!I received my copy tonight and while I had intended to keep it, I've decided to bring it directly to my nieces' house tomorrow. I am positive the 3-year-old will love it. I am positive the 6-year-old will love it. I am positive the 9-year-old will love it. (Not to be gender-normative. If I had a young nephew in that house, I am positive he would love it, too!) So here I am back on Amazon to order a new copy for myself.Brava to Jessie Sima on this wonderful book that feels as if it was written for us land narwhals who always thought we were sea unicorns. 5 VERY SPARKLY STARS!UPDATE 2/27/17: Nieces' review: "This book is AMAZING!" (I will note that the 3-year-old was very concerned about who Kelp's mommy was. So we decided it was the guitar-playing unicorn.) :)

Really, I should be giving this book five RAINBOWS. A delightful tale of being caught between two worlds and finding one's place. A perfect gift for children of all ages who love narwhals and unicorns, and, let's be honest, who doesn't?

So very cute!! My daughter (8) read the first page and then immediately called her older brother over so she could read to him and show him the pictures. The illustration of baby Kelp made her melt, and she loved the happy message of love and acceptance. :) Can't wait for more from Jessie!

Got this book for my 6yo niece for Christmas (yeah I shop early hehe) and it is adorable with a wonderful message.Very few words on pages which have them and when the characters speak their talking is done in speach bubbles the way a comic book would do it while the 'story' part is handled like comic book narration. The images are every bit as sweet and whimsical as the cover art and that cover is pretty typical of the level of detail you can expect. The message or lesson of the story is very simple and ignores all the complexities we adults know exist--the people who love you already love you for who you are but you can still love new friends too.Additional messages you can point out are how brave little Kelp (the protagonist) was, how it was alright that he did not like some foods which he still had to eat, that he worked hard and did not give up when I was trying to learn something new and that he thought about his problem then came up with a solution which helped everyone.

Not Quite Narwhal begins with a dazzling cover that glitters and sparkles. Inside, a harmonious blend of brilliant colors depicted in soft hues portray an enchanting array of creatures and places: rainbow fish and silver-white jellyfish, flitting through a pale blue sea; round white eyes, floating in the darkness of night; and vibrant butterflies flitting over jade colored fields.Kelp is a darling unicorn with his turquoise hair, bubblegum pink nose, and spotted rump. Whether he's wearing floaties in the sea, leaping like a frog on land, or splashing around beneath a rainbow, Kelp is the cutest not-quite-narwhal. His journey is visually gratifying as he ventures from the cozy, lavender confines of the shell he lives in beneath the sea to a sun-dappled forest. He treks through a moonlit night with twinkling stars, to a rainbow laden field where butterflies flit and flowers sprout in red and pink, yellow and purple. After his sojourn on land, Kelp is confronted with a difficult question:"Did he want to be a land narwhal with the unicorns . . .Or a sea unicorn with the narwhals?Kelp couldn't decide."Touching on identity and fitting in vs. standing out, Kelp is the perfect role model for learning to love oneself and appreciating that our individual traits make each of us unique and special. With a heartfelt message, ravishing illustrations, and a sprinkle of humor, Not Quite Narwhal is a must have.

When I was a mother of a very young child in my mid-30s, I started reading picture books with stories to my son when he was about 4 months old. The first time we read a story picture book, we only made it to page 2 ;-). However, we perserved and soon we were able to enjoy a whole picture book story together. In fact, reading a picture book with mom or dad, squished In a big comfy chair, became a favorite activity. My son's taste in books to be listened to (versus books to be chewed on) was for stories with some physical action on the part of the characters, some silliness, and a little bit of repetitive text (like the chorus of a song). He's grown up now so I cannot test this picture book on him anymore but I think that toddler would have like this book.Kelp is a sweet character. His narwhal family are loving. His land based unicorn friends are loving. And there is a happy ending. The last picture is fun, showing all kinds of activities being played. There's food in the story too, another good thing.I could read this five times in a row to a toddler, no problem ;-) !

I bought his for my sons yes it’s a bit more of a girly book ,but we have a ongoing joke in our family that mom (me) says Narwhals do not exist and unicorns do. My boys think it’s hilarious so that’s why I keep it up. This book being about a unicorn that thinks it was a Narwhal just continues my joke :-) my boys enjoyed it! And the illustrations are very nice. It is a seriously cute book.
