Q: The Autobiography of Quincy Jones, by Quincy Jones

Amazon.com Review

He reached an apogee of fame in the mid-1980s as the producer-arranger of Michael Jackson's blockbuster album Thriller and the charity single "We Are the World," but Quincy Jones has been a force in American music since he was a teenager. He swung hard enough to play with beboppers like Dizzy Gillespie; he studied composition with the legendary Nadia Boulanger; he scored dozens of films and TV shows; he arranged and/or produced albums for everyone from Frank Sinatra to Leslie Gore, and rappers like Melle Mel don't disdain the old man either. Looking back at age 68 in a good-natured autobiography supplemented with brief chapters by such friends as Ray Charles and ex-wife Peggy Lipton, Jones asserts, "I've been driven all my life by a spirit of adventure and a criminal level of optimism." Given his beginnings, growing up poor in Chicago and Seattle with a mentally ill mother lurking in the background, that's quite an achievement. Jones never stood still long enough to let sorrow catch him, and though his treatment of his personal life is standard Hollywood glib ("Though Nastassja [Kinski]'s and my relationship as a couple was not destined to last, she is a great friend"), his prose catches fire when it touches on music: Dinah Washington "could take the melody in her hand, hold it like an egg, crack it open, fry it, let it sizzle, reconstruct it, put the egg back in the box and back in the refrigerator, and you would've still understood every single syllable." His furious energy may have been fueled by personal demons, but his joyous sweep through a half century of American pop convinces you that Jones was right to keep moving: "Nothing is ever wrong if it's going someplace," he asserts. "Music is about ever-changing." --Wendy Smith

From Publishers Weekly

With some chapters written by Jones, and others by his family and friends (Ray Charles and Peggy Lipton, to name a few), this (auto)biography full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes has an improvisational feel that suits its subject: a jazz musician and superstar composer. Jones came from a hardscrabble background split between Seattle and Chicago when he was still a boy, his schizophrenic mother was placed in a mental hospital for a time, and he was raised by his father and a stepmother. Jones discovered his talent for music early on, and hit the road with Lionel Hampton's jazz band when he was still a teenager. Hampton is just one of the musical greats who makes an appearance Frank Sinatra, Dinah Washington and Ray Charles are others. Jones scored his greatest musical successes during the 1970s and '80s (during which years he composed film scores and Michael Jackson's albums), but the strength of the book comes early on, when he describes the joy of his discovery of music, his early friendship with Charles and his struggles and joys as a jazz trumpeter on the road. "When I played music, my nightmares ended. My family problems disappeared." But to Jones's credit, he doesn't hold back his narrative when those problems caught up with him in the 1980s and he suffered a mental breakdown. With the help of his friends, Jones has composed a life story that gives much more than the typical celebrity memoir. (Oct.)Forecast: This title will appeal to many, including fans buying the CD boxed set, Q: The Music of Quincy Jones.Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

I bought two. One for me and one as a gift for a friend of mine who is life long friends with Quincy. We both absolutely love it. I would stay in my car when I got to destinations just to keep listening. He's got a great voice along with great stories...This is a must hear for any musician!

The autobiography of Quincy Jones is like one of his arrangements: masterful, engaging on several levels, and state-of the-art. Jones' life story seems MADE for a highly dramatic, award-winning t.v. or big screen movie -- and I dearly hope it'll be made into one. Musician. Producer. Businessman. Composer. Arranger. Determination and incredible talent skyrocketing him over big obstacles. It's fitting that Jones' biggest passion is music because this outstanding autobiography truly SINGS. From the first pages, you're thrust into the drama -- and challenge -- of Jones' life. Born into a poor family, throughout most of his life (well into his adult years) Jones struggled with how to cope-with and at times how to distance himself from a mother who suffered from severe mental illness. Music became his savior and Jones embraced it like the stable motherly love which he sought and he lacked as a child. He embraced Mother Music, letting it's beauty embrace, comfort and sustain him. There are several things that sets this book apart from other show biz bios and makes it such sheer JOY for readers of ALL ages (old fogies like me who grew up with his music as well as young folks interested in music, interested in biographies or interested in show business and the arts in general):1.PANORAMIC STYLE. There is so much in it that we can only list a little here, such as the poignant vignette of a young, arts-smitten Jones, just discovering his musical "chops" and bonding with a blind teenage musician named Ray Charles who basically mentored and inspired him; his later associations with greats such as Sammy Davis Jr, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson and many many more. Jackson, he writes, "wanted to be the best of everything" so he "went to the top model in each (show biz) category to create an act and a persona that would be unequalled." But "somehow later on the line between the reality and the fantasy got blurred." In the end, Jones writes, Jackson became "a total sponge, a chamelon." Jackson practiced hours and hours to perfect every single move, gesture and facial expression. I am haunted by Jones' portrait of Sinatra. For all the tough-guy accounts elsewhere, Sinatra comes across as a noble and principled human being -- cooking Jones breakfast when he learned that Jones stayed up all night working; insisting that African-American musicians for his Vegas concert be allowed to play and get good rooms at a casino and telling his security to do significant bodily harm to any racists who harrassed them, even the slightest bit.2)SECOND VOICES. Not all chapters are written by Jones. He also let others write their accounts about parts of his life, and not all of this material is complimentary. This adds a documentary feel and a sense of balance that most show business autobiographies lack.3)USEFUL OBSERVATIONS. In his chapter on Michael Jackon's rise to the top of the music heap he notes that writes that he learned that "Nobody stays at the top. Nobody." Success, he writes, is "about preparation, then finding the rightopportunity" -- and that he learned that "being chronically underestimated can be a gift." Jone's autobiography takes you through the 20th century's top musical and show business eras, and gifts you an incredible cast of famous well-etched cameos. The depth, ease, and detail of this panoramic journey is paralleled only by his private trek -- from poverty to aspiration to success, all amid personal family tragedies. In the end, we see a man (and artist) who constantly survived and triumphed due to his humanity -- and his unceasing personal growth.

I ,like many of the reviewers below, am just blown away by the accomplishments of this man. His life in music spans decades and musical styles that makes him unique among American musicians. From Lionel Hampton to Frank Sinatra To Michael Jackson to a seemingly endless list of film and TV scores----Q has seen and done it all musically. The book is very well written and touchingly sentimental in his recollection of deceased family members and friends. At one point I began to wonder if Q ever met a man or a woman he didn't like. He has so much that is positive to say about almost everyone he came into contact with in what is a notoriously sleezy business that I began to wonder if he was just trying to be inoffensive. I concluded at last that this guy is just blessed with a generous heart that allows him to see the best in people. His genuine love of the music and the people who make it with him just jumps off the pages. This is an inspiring story of a man who has overcome considerable obstacles both social and physcial but has retained his essential positive energy. He is one of the all time greats.

AFTER READING THIS PHENOMINAL BOOK I HAVE JUST ONE WORD FOR IT: "DAYUM!" OF ALL THE BIOS I HAVE READ ON THE LUSHOUS HISTORY OF BLACK MUSIC LEGENDS, THIS IS THE MOST PROVOCATIVE, INFORMATIVE, EYE OPENING, REAL, EDUCATIONAL BIO'S I HAVE EVER READ. I WILL PUT THIS HIGH ON THE LIST WITH TWO OTHERS I READ, "BROTHER RAY" AND "RAGE TO SURVIVE". Q, GIVES DEEP AND GRAPHIC INSITE INTO HIS PERSONAL LIFE AS GROWING UP, TO BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST PROFOUND OF MUSIC LEGENDS IN THE INDUSTRY. I TRULY ENJOYED READING THIS BOOK AND TO ANY MUSIC ENTHUSIAST WHO LOVE TO READ ABOUT THE GREAT LEGENDS OF POPULAR MUSIC, IT'S A MUST READ. A REAL EYE OPENER. THIS BOOK DESERVES A SECOND READ WHICH I WILL DO. Q, YOU ARE THE MASTER!!!

When I was 15 I bought an album called Hip Hits. I knew nothing about Quincy Jones, except that I liked the music and this was around 1963. But, when i saw his name popping-up as a composer in such movies as The Carpetbaggers, In The Heat of the Night, did I began to learn about Quincy Jones. He was the first black musician who composed music themes, but also was music direct for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, The Brothers Johnson, and of course, Michael Jackson.Quincy is the last of his breed and this book also gives acolades to other great musicians, who are long gone and unknown to many young music lovers. This is a good chance to get to know them.

I never wanted to buy or read it until I found it interesting. I used to HATE IT, but now I love it. I think Quincy tells it all on he grew up the most wonderful entertainers of the year. I think he could be an inspiration to me. I actually grew up with him since I listen to some albums and artists he work with in past. From Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Patti Austin, James Ingram, Chaka Kahn, Donna Summer, Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Lesley Gore, Frank Sinatra, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, 2Pac, George Benson, Howard Hewett, Sammy Nestico, The Brothers Johnson, Luther Vandross, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Steven Spielberg, the whole list goes on and on. Y'know Quincy Jones could be know as the pioneer of music history or else I would the most famous man in town. I think he'll be remember as a person who's trying to make live in the music world and the music business. This is definitely a book I should recommend who wants to hear more about this man and his legacy. He's actually the founder of VIBE magazine which I read all the time which is pretty amazing.

This interactive book involves young readers in befriending a dinosaur that is quite shy. The narrator serves as the introduction to Crunch and encourages young readers/listeners to speak to Crunch in a gentle, reasonable manner. I loved the way the book simply teaches how to befriend someone who is shy. As a shy person myself, I could relate to Crunch's discomfort. I also liked how the book demonstrates how to adjust one's own behavior based on that of the other person (or dinosaur in this case). I plan to use this book with my kindergartners when talking about how to be a good friend.

I found myself slightly perplexed by the way this book was written and the use of certain words that were just too weird for me to want to recommend. My grandson is very shy himself, so when the narrator was saying he spoke too loudly, it was as though the author was reprimanding a small child for something he didn't do. Since I was the one reading the book, I had to paraphrase some things so it didn't sound like I was fussing at my grandson. Cute illustrations.

Oh my gosh this book is great on so many levels!! It’s funny, interactive, has just the right amount of words on the pages for a 2.5yo, and is not too long. Illustrations are super cute. My son has asked to read this book every night since we got it. Don’t hesitate to buy this book!

That the book is interactive!! My grandkids ages 3 & 5 loves it. They wanted it read daily. They took the book home with them so their parents could read it to them. My granddaughter loves dinosaurs, this was a great gift 💝

My kids’ new favorite book! Our whole family adores this book! We’re fan of Doreen Cronin’s “Diary of a “ series, and they totally have that vibe. The humor is amazing. Brilliantly written.

Our 3-yr old granddaughter loves this book.

Beautifully illustrated with a very lovable dinosaur!

We love this book! Perfect for bedtime. It is interactive and so may be better for a 3+ but we are definitely reading this to our 5 month old.

wonderful to listen to the book while I am quilting

So well read by Emma Thompson with added depth coming from a host of voice actors. I love this story and the format made the book really enjoyable!

Sometimes the music actually was too loud and interfered with the audio. There were several readers that made itnice, but sometimes they were talking over each other, and there were sound affects in the background, and musicso it was a little hard to hear the actual book. But, since I've read the book several times, AND saw the movie (hah)it made it all right.

I was so excited when I saw that Emma Thompson was narrating. I had no idea that all the other voices for this would be so awful. It pains me that I paid for this.

The narrators were fantastic!!! It felt like I was watching the movie instead of listening to the book!!!!

An interesting collection of stories from the early days of the H7D3 "Zombie" Plague. None of the stories were as depressing as some in the original "Black Tide Rising" anthology but there were some times reading that I thought"Damn, human beings can be dumb AND greedy." I was a bit disappointed that there were no stories dealing with either Wolf Squadron or any of the main character, though they (Seawolf, Shewolf, Walker) are mentioned in several of the tales.Overall a good read. If you're a fan of the series, as I am, you do need to read the book. I am awaiting the sequel to to "The Valley of Shadows" to learn more of the fate of Thomas Smith and the Bank of the Americas crew. Now I just have to make it till July 2nd.............................

...just kidding, sorta...there was a full length novel in every one of the stories and I...BY...GOD...WANT...TO...READ...THEM!!!!Thank you all for your stellar contributions to John Ringo's most recent Universe, especially Sarah Hoyt and Jodie Lynn Nye...that being said the rest of them rocked it as well...thanks guys great read, bless your hearts and thank you all for sharing your talent.

I found this much more readable and interesting than the previous anthology, and liked ALL of the stories. I look forward to some of them perhaps becoming full books/series at some point. These stories are more reminiscent of the older science fiction anthologies that shared so many classics with us. Ray Bradbury would have been right at home here.

First, let me say that I am a big John Ringo fan, and an even bigger fan of Black Tide Rising series, but in my opinion, the stories in this book are not up to the standards of either the novels or the previous anthology (with a couple exceptions). These stories just didn't connect with me, not sure why. Maybe i wanted a continuation of the adventures of the characters in the novels as opposed to snapshots of strangers. It might also be because i am tired of the "zombie victim" mentality present in many of these stories. In the Black Tide Rising novels, they take the initiative against the zombies, freeing up people and building a community again. They remember that we are at the top of the food chain for a reason. For me, that's a more fun story to read. It's one big reason i like Ringo's take on the zombie apocalypse. Instead of just hanging on by their teeth or just trying to survive until "help" arrives, Ringo's characters take the offensive, and bring the war to the zombies, freeing up other survivors along the way, and starting to rebuild civilization.just my two cents

Been a huge fan of the author and this series for ages. Was thrilled when three new books hit the market in a short time. This collection is a good expansion, with stories covering the fall and decades later. I HATED the story set in Tibet. It read like a dime novel SciFi story that was already completed, then edited for a vague tie-in the to the plague. The entire concept did not fit. The technology did not fit. The second story was also a total reach, but at least was true to the past books. There's plenty of mentions of She and Sea Wolf, and the short concerning NASA and the Dragon capsule was a great backstory. If you're a fan of the series, yea, get the book. If you've never read the series, read the series. READ IT. Then get this book.

I love seeing other authors writing in another author's universe. It gives so much more to the storyline to see other perspectives of the main storyline.

Ringo created a very believable zombie apocalypse, and this collection gives us more stories in it. Ringo is one of only 2 authors I pre-order in hardcover, because he is unfailingly entertaining. The other authors in this collection also did great crafting more tales of "the Fall".

This grouping of tales fills out questions and gaps in the Black Tide Rising series. Yes, people are surviving all over the world, come and read about it! BTR is about survival and family, not calamity.
