I am 73, was born in Amarillo, Texas, graduated high school in Pampa, Texas, spent my honeymoon on horseback in the Wichita Mountain Canyon just inside the Oklahoma line, and have roamed Palo Duro canyon many times. And that's what drew me to this history-based novel. I loved the story, am very familiar with the weather (We called them "blue northers", by the way) and could see the locations in my mind's eye. But, I agree with those who wrote that the story was too wordy.The author did, in fact, repeat himself excessively in almost the identical words. I am not adverse to someone stating his particular religious dogma within the storyline; however, turning that dogma into a long, multi-paged sermon is also excessive and actually takes away from the story. Like some of the other reviewers, I became really tired of reading through Roman Catholic sermons and simply skipped all of it until the storyline reappeared. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying to skip the dogma...sculpt it down to simply show what makes up the fiber of the man and move on with the story.As Part One came out apparently in 2007, I am surprised to find that Part Two of this trilogy has not yet appeared on the market. I hope that the delay is not because of the same verbosity on the part of the author for I'd like to continue reading the basic story.

I have read this book three times so I can honestly give it five stars.The storyline is interspersed with "sermonettes" - philosophical, political, and religious sidelines that add thought, historical value, and depth to the novel. A western version of the 19th century Scottish George MacDonald novels.I love a great western and this is truly a great one so I skimmed a lot of the sermonettes during my first read, stumbling along in order to hurry through the story. The characters were real and likeable, the plot was unhurried but kept me reading, and the historical details were accurate and enlightening.Had it been only those things I would have rated the book 4 stars. But for me a 5 star book calls me back over and over. It's like returning to visit an old friend. That is how I felt about this book. And the sermonettes that I skimmed the first time, were read and re-read and pondered during the next 2 times that I read this book. I have even come back to them for school and character lessons. What was a stumbling block as I tried to hurry through, became fuel for thought and research as I savored the book at a slower pace.I am currently starting my 4th reading in anticipation of volume 2 that is due out in January, 2015. And I braved the unknown world of amazon reviews in the hopes that others will take the time to read a truly great book.

This Western covers a family that strives to establish good moral character in their children and the details of their triumph and tragedy. It goes cross faith and cross culture. Catholic and Protestant together working for a common goal. The 70 times 7; (relating to how many times one should forgive his brother taught by Jesus to Peter in the Gospels) name of their "brand," that's how they come up with the brand 70X7. At times while reading Escondido Bound I grew restless at the level of detail provided, wanting to jump ahead to find out what was coming next. However I resisted temptation and continued to give each page its due. At its conclusion I felt a sense of loss for not being able to continue, as well as a true appreciation for what I'd read. Like his characters, the author tells the story in an honest, measured and engaging manner. I am looking forward to introducing this book to family and friends ... almost as much as I am looking forward to reading the second installment.

It was easy to get caught up in the characters lives & become absorbed in this book. I enjoyed reading a western story with a new perspective from this author. Most westerns are pretty generic. There was a lot of philosophy & opinion that the author added. It was based on scripture & his interpretation of it. It was a bit long in parts but for the most part good to hear another person's opinion on familiar Biblical teachings. I was a bit deflated when the whole thing ended & I'm left "Hanging" for the next part of the story but, as an author he was doing a good job of selling his story! Now waiting for the next book!

Finally, the almost unbearable weight of responsibility toward family and the partnership.A theme runs through the telling. "Man must live and be guided by a higher authority to build that which will last." The spiritual values of the 7OX7 party were lived out in their daily lives. However, the villian lives by a different code and threatens all they have achieved and what they stand for. Who and what will win out. We are left praying for the Stuart-Schurtz party but completely uncertain as to their future.Bring on Part Two![...]

Excellent "western" albeit without all the usual absurdities. This book kept me captivated for several days on a Virgin Island vacation. A few complain about the internal monologues, but I found this the best part and often re-read them several times. I look forward to Part 2.

If you are like me and had to use a Scanning Electron Microscope or SEM, you want to start with the basics that everyone goes by. This book is a safe bet that most everyone knows about. Plus, it is written with very little background in the world of electron microscopy. Too many authors to list but it's wonderful that alot of experts got together to present this material in clear, concise manner. Before you grab your solid-state physics book or check Wikipedia, just relax and page through it since this book pretty much makes it easy for you.Chapters are arranged by the following: What is SEM?, How SEM works?, and Why are we interested with SEM? That's the easiest way to explain rather than list all the chapters. If you have a specific question, you don't even have to read through the previous chapters (if you have rough understanding). The size of this book is a BIG PLUS. It's compact compared to the monsterous Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) book by Barry Carter which is another great reference. For this price, you would be lucky to find another good reference book under $100 with such relevant information.

I had to purchase this text for my EM class in undergrad and it was a wealth of information! This text was clear and concise with the content and topics were easily found and referenced. I could you use text for both exploratory information and also trouble-shooting imaging issues and queries.

I'm reading this book and an older edition of the Reimer text for in independent study course in SEM. While I'm only three chapters into both texts, the Goldstein text seems more readable. I like the writing style, and it doesn't seem to sacrifice in any technical aspect.It is also very well illustrated. For a book about an imaging technology, this is obviously quite important. There are many instances where there are sets of images to compare the results achieved with varied operating parameters.The text is well organized. It begins with an assumption that you know some basic physics and chemistry, but doesn't require any background in microscopy. Both the Table of Contents and Index are detailed enough to enable specific searches for specific subject matter.This is a textbook I look forward to reading in the evening, and one that I look forward to finishing. It matches very well with the practical work I'm doing on the SEM.

This is the bible of SEM.I just started working in a SEM lab and wanted to know more of the technical science behind it. My co-worker, who has been doing SEM for ~5 years recommend the book to me.This book has greatly exceeded my expectations and has impressed me with the technical content.Worth the $$$.

I couldn't stop reading. "One more chapter" turned into the whole book. I'm loving every second of the ride (minus the comic reading format this one changed to, as opposed to the way all the other comics I've read on kindle were set up - a way I much preferred and was easier to read than this). Great book. I want so much to stay up and read more, but I'd be up all night. It's really that good.

This series of comics was started several years ago but isn't finished yet? I want to purchase the entire set of the Marvel rendition of "The Stand". My difficulty is trying to figure out what are the order of these books. I havefigured Volumes I and 3 because the volume number is included in their titles but what of the others?Is the following list correct?Vol 1 "Capt. Gotta love the illustrations to Stephen King's Classic Novel. I've read this before and it is nice to see another visual aspect to the story other than the one that I saw as I read it!

A great story and I've been told one of the best adaptations of the novel thus far.

I would recommend this series/graphic novel to anyone who loves Stephen King's books especially if they love The Stand. The artwork is amazing and the story is awesome.

Wonderful collection of the comics into one bound edition. Full color, great story and really compliments the tale he is telling. Artistic work is beautiful and really brings a new dimension to the tale.

Marvel did an amazing job with this Stephen King classic. It is simply amazing as a graphic novel. I can't wait to get them all!!!! It shipped fast as well and was cheap.

We use this book with Classical Conversations and I absolutely love it. The Experiments are easy to understand and uses materials that are around the house are at least easy to find. It follows the scientific method, What is the purpose, what are your materials, work the procedure, show the results, it even explains why the experiment works instead of leaving you hanging on doing something from a Pinterest fail. I highly recommend any of Janice VanCleave's Science books and experiments.

Cool simple experiments with easy to follow instructions and few materials needed. I use to tutor a homeschool group and always research some additional information to go along with the lesson and experiment.

We use this book for classical conversations. I’m so happy I looked on amazon first 😊. The science experiments are simple and require little materials which is good for little ones.

Great book with lots of quality experiments that are easy to do at home. We are thoroughly enjoying the experiments. My only criticism is that the relationship to the scientific method and scientific principles are somewhat difficult to discern for those without a strong science background.

Patricia Leavy, PhD, is an independent sociologist and former Chair of Sociology and Criminology and Founding Director of Gender Studies at Stonehill College in Easton, Massachusetts. She is the author, coauthor, or editor of over 25 books, and the creator and editor of seven book series. Known for her commitment to public scholarship, she is frequently contacted by the U.S. national news media and has regular blogs for The Huffington Post, The Creativity Post, and We Are the Real Deal. She is also co-founder and co-editor-in-chief of the journal Art/Research International. Dr. Leavy has received numerous awards for her work in the field of research methods, including the Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award from the National Art Education Association, the New England Sociologist of the Year Award from the New England Sociological Association, the Special Achievement Award from the American Creativity Association, the Egon Guba Memorial Keynote Lecture Award from the American Educational Research Association Qualitative Special Interest Group, and the Special Career Award from the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry. Spark is a breath of fresh air. This is an uplifting, original, well-written novel. I was thoroughly engaged following the cast of characters as they tried to unravel the meaning of a dumbfounding question and discovered things about themselves and others along the way. There were great life reminders about the importance of the process over the outcome and challenging oneself to push past comfort zones. We all need those reminders from time to time. As a former teacher, one of the most gratifying parts was after finishing the “tour de force” one is given “points to ponder” and questions to consider. Thanks, I needed that!

This book is that rarest of works, a great story and a great, deep message. The cast of characters are all interesting and important to the story. Nothing is wasted in this book, every phrase, every nuance is a vital building block in constructing the plot and the great conclusion. An important read, one that will 'spark' so many different emotions, and will definitely carry you to the top of the mountain, and out of your comfort zone.

An interesting read, not sure what I was expecting, but not disappointed either. It’s hard not to pause and have a think on a key phrase, or comment from the story. But that is the idea isn’t it? I so wanted the answer to the question... silently forbidding myself to skip to the end... but it was ultimately all those key thoughts (I actually highlighted them along the way) that made me think that provided the answer.

"Spark" creates a sense of awe and wonder about human connection and the exciting possibilities that can develop when groups of diverse people come together to solve problems. The book reminds us that the journey to find the solution to a problem is always filled with a great deal of personal growth and discovery. Leavy ‘s gift to weave an engaging narrative makes for an inspiring read, as well as creating new bridges between the social sciences and arts based research.

I loved this novel so much. It read like an Agatha Christie mystery that had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it would all turn out. As with every novel she's ever written, I only meant to read the first chapter but was hooked by the opening line and didn't look up until to my horror I was done. Each character begins as a narrow archetype but is given space to grow and challenge our expectations about how we see each other and ourselves. But as someone who loves to use literature in my History courses, this is the first novel I've ever read where I immediately thought it would work amazingly well in a research methods class. Leavy cleverly gives us a glimpse into the ways different academic disciplines approach the 'truth' illustrating the surprisingly different ways to see and accumulate knowledge. In this way, Leavy has perhaps written the perfect novel for use in any discipline including the sciences, humanities, and cultural studies. A book that both accessible to college students and professors alike, offering a range of helpful tips about the ways to ask big questions and unpack research. It's also so rare to read a novel about academics that moves beyond narrow stereotype of the arrogant know-it-all narcissist. Finally, if you need more, it truly reads like a cinematic look at one of the most picturesque regions of the world. Well worth a read.

I loved this novel. Set in the richly described Icelandic landscape, Spark is really about how one woman who has lost the magic in her own life, as so many of us do, finds new bravery when she attends an exclusive, invitation-only retreat. Through meeting people from around the world, being forced to work together to answer a mystifying question that kept me in suspense until the last page, and exploring spectacular sites, she discovers things about herself and the world that change her perspective on life. I loved the setting, the characters, and the story. I couldn’t help but place myself in the protagonist’s shoes, which I think is exactly what the author intended. I’m going to try and be a little braver and kinder in my own life. This is a novel for everyone. It’s really beautiful.

A MUST-READ. I couldn’t put this book down. It’s the definition of a page-turner. Spark is a stunning little novel that filled me with joy and inspiration. There’s so much divisiveness and ugliness in our society these days. This novel is the antidote. It filled me with hope. We can learn to see past our differences. Each of us can also nurture our own spark, no matter how small it has become, it is never too late to live the life we were meant to live and to overcome our fears. Everyone should read this novel. It is light and could have only come from acclaimed and beloved author Patricia Leavy. Buy it for yourself and everyone in your life. It’s the perfect gift for anyone you love. Appropriate for all ages. I’m going to read it again when I need a little inspiration.

Spark responds to how we can make decisions that are in everyone's best interest, even when we approach the problem from very different backgrounds and perspectives. My mother, daughter of Martha Frew, was born in Pennsylvania to Scotch-Irish and German parents.Warfare between the Irish and the British began in 1169 when Anglo-Normans invaded Ireland. Rhodeen wrote, “The cycle of English colonization, with its demeaning and dehumanizing treatment of the Irish, and Irish uprising and retaliation, would continue for the next three centuries.”Around the time my wife and I were planning to visit England, my father’s ancestral homeland, a bomb exploded on the 33rd floor of the Post Office tower in London causing extensive damage. I'm a long-time Gil Scott-Heron (GSH) fan. Since his passing there have been a few books that tell his story. Gil's memoir, THE LAST HOLIDAY, is interesting but he left lots of holes in his story. Leslie Goffe's book, GSH: A FATHER AND HIS SON, is a great read that tells an interesting father/son story. Marcus Baram's book, PIECES OF A MAN, is the best yet and it's a must-read for any GSH fan. The research is deep, the writing is engaging, and the stories are priceless. Baram shares the most information I've read about Gil's lost years in the 80s and 90s. While it's emotional to read, I enjoyed hearing from Gil's friends and band members discussing his drug addiction issues. Baram also gives us more information in the rift that developed between Gil and his music co-conspirator, Brian Jackson. I will cherish this book for years to come. Thanks Marcus for caring so much to write such a thoughtful biography of a man's whose music has meant so much to me.

This book helped me understand Gil Scott-Heron. Its not a pretty picture. The book starts with a long and sometimes slow discussion of his childhood. While reading it, I wondered if the book would be worth the time. Very quickly this well written story gained momentum and by the mid-point, I could barely put it down.Several decades ago, when I was in High School, I first heard Gil Scott-Heron's In The Bottle, read and listened to some of his other works, and learned of his opposition to using hard drugs. I was amazed and impressed by his radical clarity. In 2010, "The New Yorker" published an excellent piece examining Gil Scott-Heron's (then current) life and dependence on crack cocaine. It was probably the first thing I'd heard about Gill Scott-Heron in 20 years or more. Less than a year later, he was dead.This book helped me understand the man, his greatness and his vanities.

I must admit that I'm extremely biased when it comes to Gil Scott-Heron. He was such a talent, a musical genius, an intellectual par excellence and an artist committed to the improvement of lives of people. I think this book does a great job of capturing the essence of Gil. From his childhood to his musical journey, the brilliance of his unscripted performances, the drug use, the decline in health, it's all here. And it reads like a runaway train, one of those books you can't put down, because you are so eager to see what's next for Gil. If you aren't familiar with Gil Scott-Heron, this book serves as a great introduction. If you are a fan, like myself, this is a tremendous trip down memory lane.

A Great Piece of history on my favorite Author, Poet and Musician of all time Mr. Gil Scott-Heron. I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago in NY and I was blown away by his knowledge. The man was deep and a true revolutionary in a day when all of what he sung about and wrote about is still true to this day. Rest in Peace Mr. Heron you are loved and missed.

A crisp, compelling portrait of an under-recognized poetic genius and cultural icon. Funny, stirring and tragic, it is hard to stop reading once you begin. And the writing is great -- lean and lyrical. One of my favorite lines: “What was striking was Gil’s blend of radicalism with humor: a pie in the face followed by a left hook to the jaw.” Highly, highly recommend this book.

Surprisingly good.Detail is extraordinarily.Good anecdotes that reflect all the celebrities that he happen to have crossed paths with. I’m awestruck!

I took my time reading this book. I guess I just wanted to take it all in piece by piece. Gil Scott-Heron will always be a part of my thoughts. I never really understood his additive behavior, but his life as all of us is our own. This book gave me in site of a man I admired musically and spiritually. His presence will always be present in my creative endeavours.

An exceptional well written book, even though it has such a tragic ending, it was still very uplifting and and covered allthere was to know of such a great artist. Gone all too soon!!!!

This is a remarkable work and is beautifully executed. The Sister Musa approaches the topic with honesty, clarity, and enables the reader to see how the position of hadith changed in the early centuries. It certainly reinforces the great influence of Al-Shafi'i on the face of Islam. I find her writing is clear, and her conclusions are well justified. This work, and works like it, are important to understand the question of diversity in practice and in the interpretation of Islamic sources of Faith. I consider this an important work for all of us; especially those who think they know a great deal about early Islam, and how the faith has grown and developed to what we know now.

This handy volume of Aisha Musa makes some solid contribution to Islamic discourse - to a crucial debate that has been of concern to Muslims of all walks of life throughout Islamic history: Does the Hadith have authority as a source of religious law and guidance in Islam? Unveiling hitherto unknown, extant literature - a commendable effort in itself - Musa finds that the challenge to the Hadith as an authoritative source in Islam is almost as old as Islam itself and that such opposition was widespread in early Islam. Interestingly, she finds echoes of the arguments used against the authority of the Hadith in early Islam in the contemporary anti-Hadith movement as well.Musa delves into the discussions of early Muslim scholars on both sides of the debate for and against the authority of the Hadith. She harps more on the question of authority than that of authenticity. The latter issue has tended to dominate the discussions of later Hadith critics. In raising the issue of authority and its ongoing importance, Musa rightly points out that even though the Hadith has eventually come to hold a high status among mainstream Muslims, opposition to it never completely died down. Such opposition reemerged at different points in history and it has persisted for more than a century in modern time. She notes, "Thanks to dramatic improvements in the worldwide publication and communication of ideas, the debate now involves Muslims in all walks of life from around the world, making it a topic of concern to Muslims today as it was in the past" (Musa, p. 4).Musa's research also sheds light on two other related, yet important questions: one is about whether the anti-Hadith movement is influenced by Western-Orientalist ideas and the other is about whether a similar movement is found in the case of any other religious tradition. Her work demonstrates that the movement against the authority of the Hadith is very much homegrown - a development from within Islam and "an inherently Muslim response to an inherently Muslim concerns" (Ibid, pp. 1, 3). And she finds that there is a close parallel between the anti-Hadith movement in Islam and the anti-Mishnah, anti-Talmud movement led by Karaites in Judaism, but she observes that the latter movement did not influence the movement in Islam. This has been a movement in both Islam and Judaism to protect the Book of God as a sole scriptural authority from other, manmade books.Musa notes that opposition to the Hadith as a competing source of religious authority began early in Islam and is found in a text that Muslim tradition holds to be a letter from the Kharijite Abd Allah Ibn Ibad to the Caliph Abd al-Malik in or around 76 AH/695 CE. Though the authorship and dating of this letter are in some dispute, it still predates al-Shafii (d. 204 AH/820 CE) and its importance as a challenge to the authority of the Hadith remains undented. A key passage of this letter criticizes the Kufans for taking "hadiths" for their religion abandoning the Quran. "They believed in a book which was not from God, written by the hands of men; they then attributed it to the Messenger of God" (Michael Cook, Muslim Dogma, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1981, p. 9; cited in Musa, p. 38).Musa's work shows how curiously in the third century after the Prophet's death, al-Shafii elevated the Hadith to the status of divine revelation, using the concept of the duality of divine revelation, one for the Quran and the other for the Hadith. Because the early Hadith rejecters' works were not directly available, Musa chronicles the early objections to the Hadith by looking at the works of al-Shafii and Ibn Qutayba (d. 276 AH). She examines al-Shafii's Kitab Jima`al-`Ilm and Risala (Musa includes in her book a translation of Kitab Jima`al-`Ilm). Musa extensively draws on the works of these two figures as well as on Taqyid al-Ilm of Al-Khatib al-Bagdadi (d. 463/1071 CE) about two and a half centuries after al-Shafii's death to document the arguments used in the early years of Islam both in favor of and against the Hadith.The opposition to the Hadith as reported by al-Shafii in his Jima`al-`Ilm was much during his time. Both Al-Shafi'i and Ibn Qutayba refer to the opponents of the Hadith as Ahl al-Kalam. Al-Shafii's work responded to a group that rejected all Prophetic reports and for this rejection their basic argument was that God declares the Quran as an explanation of everything (16:89). In relation to Al-Shafii's position on Wisdom and obedience to the Messenger, they suggested that "the Wisdom is found only in what God has revealed (i.e., the Qur'an); so that whoever submits to that is obeying the Messenger. [...] [O]beying the Messenger meant obeying only the Qur'an that God has sent down to him, and that when the Qur'an mentioned the Book together with Wisdom, the Wisdom was the specific rulings of the Book" (Musa, pp. 41, 56). Such arguments are also used in modern Quran-alone or Quran-only discourse. Al-Shafii also mentions a group that accepted only those reports that are in agreement with the Quran. Ibn Qutayba dealt with criticisms of particular Hadiths. Musa notes, "Both Al-Shafii and Ibn Qutayba indicate that the objection to Prophetic reports was widespread. Al-Shafi'i states that so many people presented so many arguments to him that he could not exactly remember who said what. Ibn Qutayba makes it clear in his introduction [of his work Ta'wil Mukhtalif al-Hadith] that the opponents of the Hadith had written books containing scathing criticisms of the proponents of the Hadith. To date, none of these books has come down to us." (Ibid, p. 21)Analyzing the arguments of al-Shafii and those of his opponents, Musa concludes that al-Shafi in fact does not have a well-defended position in favor of the Hadith. She observes that al-Shafii fails to address two key points: one relates to her failure to address the point that opposition to the Hadith was a homegrown development, not inspired by any external influence; and the other is al-Shafii's failure to address the opponents' point that the Quran declares itself as tibyanan li kulli shayeen (an explanation of everything). "These two points," Musa contends, "are at the heart of the modern-day opposition to the authority of the Hadith" (Ibid, p. 80).The relative authority of the Quran and the Hadith has in fact been an important issue since the time of the Prophet Muhammad and his closest companions. Musa chronicles the Prophet Muhammad's reported prohibition on the writing of the Hadith and his direction for erasing all collected Hadith. The proponents of the Hadith recognize this prohibition, but contend that this prohibition was later withdrawn by a statement from the Prophet, which, if true, would tend to suggest a compromise of his earlier prohibition on the Hadith that seemed to hold sway during his lifetime. Musa documents in detail Caliph Umar's strong, unequivocal objections to the writing and transmission of the Hadith by looking at two works: al-Tabaqat of Ibn Sa'd (d. 230/845), a well-regarded biographer of early generations of Muslims, including the Prophet, and Musannaf, an early Hadith collection, by Abd al-Razzaq (d. 211/827). Musa examines several reports about Umar's position in Tabaqat, including one that says that "Umar called on the people to bring them [the collected Hadith] to him, and when they brought them to him, he ordered them to be burned" ((Ibid, p. 24). "According to the stories [taken together]," Musa comments, "Umar strongly opposed both the writing and transmission of Hadith - not because he disapproved of writing or sharing the information, but because he feared that they would gain a status equal to or even greater than that of the Qura'n itself" (Ibid, p. 25). By probing the stories attributed to Umar as reported in Abd al-Razzaq's Musannaf, Musa reinforces her conclusion that Umar considered the Quran "sufficient as an authoritative source of guidance" ((Ibid, p. 28). During the Prophet Muhammad's final illness when he wanted to write something for his followers, Umar is quoted as saying, "They have the Qura'n, and the Book of God is enough for us." Musa cites in this context Linda Kern's remark in her 1996 Harvard dissertation that Umar's declaration that the Book of God was "sufficient" not only lessens Muhammad's role as an interpreter of the Quran, but it also changes the conception of revelation in relation to the Quran.Though Musa notes that objections to the Hadith continued throughout Islamic history, she did not include in her scope of study such objections as reemerged during the intervening period between early Islam and modern time. The later-day ahl al-kalam group or the Mutazilites were strong opponents of the Hadith. The arguments they used and those used by two fourteenth century scholars: Abdur Rahman b. Abu Bakr Suyuti (author of Tadrib ar-Rawi, ed. by A. R. Latif, Cairo, 1379) and Ibn Hajar (author of Hadyal-Sari, Cairo 1383), and those of the late 19th century and early 20th century important Hadith critics Sayyid Ahmad Khan (1817-1898) of the Indian sub-continent and Muhammad Toufiq Sidqi (d. 1920) of Egypt are not covered in her study. Musa briefly mentions Sidqi's contribution by referring to his article "al-Islam huwa ul-Qur'an Wahdahu" ("Islam is the Qur'an Alone") that appeared in the Egyptian journal al-Manar and touched off debates surrounding the Hadith in Egypt at the turn of the 20th century (Ibid, p. 6). After briefly noting and criticizing the anti-Hadith contribution made by Ghulam Ahmad Parwez of India, Musa documents in detail the positions of four key modern opponents of the Hadith: Egyptian-Americans Rashad Khalifa and Ahmad Mansour, Kassim Ahmad of Malysia, and Turkish-American political and religious writer and activist Edip Yuksel. As mentioned earlier, after examining their anti-Hadith arguments, she finds that the new writers use more or less the same arguments as were used by their counterparts in early Islam.Musa's treatment of the subject is scholarly and balanced. Her focus on the issue of authority of the Hadith visa-a-vis its authenticity and reliability is crucial and quite appropriate in the sense that if there is no authority, questions relating to authenticity and reliability become redundant and irrelevant. Yet, it is important and advantageous for Muslims to know how authentic and reliable the Hadith is for them to follow. Furthermore, authority and authenticity are inter-twined. Authority is crippled, if it is not backed up by authenticity. Authority hinges mainly on the theological side of the argument, especially on the requirement of validation by the Quran. Authenticity and reliability require information concerning historicity, i.e., genuineness of the historical basis, as well as objective accuracy of the Hadith. Traditionally the historical basis questions have focused on the soundness of the isnad (the chain of narrators) of each Hadith and accuracy of the matn (the content) of each Hadith, but there are other questions involved as well such as interference involved, if any, from politicians and theologians in Hadith writing, selection, and compilation, the very strength of the matn criteria used, and overall objective consistency of Hadith texts with the Quran, science, and reason. Hence, such questions concerning authenticity and reliability of the Hadith as are missing in Musa's study are as important as those relating to authority. Much of Hadith criticism has turned its attention to issues related to Hadith authenticity and reliability. Muslims should not miss it, as they need to know for certain what constitutes their genuine religion. My book "Exploring Islam in a New Light: A View from the Quranic Perspective," 2010 (earlier version "Exploring Islam in a New Light: An Understanding from the Quranic Perspective," 2008) that came at about the same time as Musa's book contains a critique of the Hadith on all grounds - theological, historical, and objective.This is a book that well deserves to be read widely by academics and non-academics alike who are interested in Islam. It's a little pricey now. It should be available in cheaper paperback and kindle or ebook versions.

Hello Everyone, I wanted to write this review for this awesome eye-opening book. It is a very very important read. Yeah its a bit pricy but worth every penny.

Aisha Musa has taken on the discussion of the authority of the 'hadith' (used in this context to mean sayings alleged to have been from the Prophet Muhammad) in this book, rather than focus on the (historical rather than Quranic) authenticity of the hadith.With clear documentary evidence, she is able to ascertain that it was through Imam Shafi that the hadith ascended to the positions in which they are held in traditional Sunni/Shia theology and that before this, the emphasis on hadith had not been so forthright. The Imam Shafi debates represented a turning point in Muslim theology, prior to which such views had not been taken seriously. Aisha Musa also demonstrates how Shafi's arguments demonstrate a classical strawman argument (although Musa does not state this explicitly, she provides the evidence for one to draw this conclusion). Unfortunately, since the time of Imam Shafi, the writings from the groups that Shafi was debating against has not been preserved for today's generation to witness.However, this book provides those who have the courage to read it further scholarly evidence to the historical flaws within hadith theology. Once such discussions are held in scholarly fashions, and without general hysteria, the fact do become clear.Towards the end of the book Musa looks at some contemporary Muslim groups who have rejected hadith and links these to the discussions Shafi had had all those years ago.To me, this is a great book which all Muslims interested in exploring the true roots of their religion need to read.

Aisha Musa has incorrectly painted a progressive revisionist view of Hadith. Ahaadeeth have been collected and transmitted in written and oral methods but apparently only until after Ash Shaafi3i Hadith was all but what...unused? Unimportant? Held a low status?Honestly this is an attempt to displace Hadith in Islam. The evidence agaisnt this revisionist view of the last is enormous.
