Review

"I just finished reading this breathtaking book in one sitting, pausing only for a much-resented phone call interruption. This is the perfect book for first-year students for so many reasons. It's a story about arriving at a place that you think is awesome but possibly too big for you, judging everyone's outsides against your insides, and finding the power of community, context, and perspective. It's about becoming more aware of how you typically understand (or misunderstand) others--and learning to listen, to tolerate uncertainty, and to try new things (some of which won't work). This is a sensational book that should be everyone's freshman read."--Eve Spangler, PhD, Department of Sociology, Boston College "Spark shows how we can think differently yet connect through understanding. Reading about a group of people with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints who come together as the story unfolds is captivating in such a polarizing time. Leavy’s characters and their journey show that sometimes the question is more important than the answer. This novel truly has something for everyone."--Corey P., undergraduate, Fairfield University   "This compelling, highly original novel from an internationally renowned sociologist and author brings us to a meeting of people with radically different perspectives and life experiences who are asked to collaboratively answer a question. We eavesdrop on their lively discussions, explore the beauty of Iceland with them, cheer as we see them help each other conquer personal fears, and rejoice as they bond into a caring community. People with very different ideas can learn to learn and care for each other. Kindness matters. We need each other’s ways of knowing. Spark is perfect for any group--class, family, community--where differences need to be respected and commonalities affirmed. If I ran the world, I would make this book required reading."--Laurel Richardson, PhD, author of Seven Minutes from Home; Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology, The Ohio State University   "Leavy’s work has profoundly affected the graduate students in my program. Spark will surely have a deep impact. I can think of no better way to launch discussions about the research process, and to expose students to fiction as a social research practice. I was captivated throughout as I, too, pursued an answer to 'the question.' Spark is brimming with insightful reflections, not only about research, but also about life. I plan to use it in all of my research courses as a required text."--Ricardo D. Rosa, PhD, School of Education, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth   "Award-winning author Patricia Leavy has done it again--written an arts-based research novel that I couldn’t put down! Amid breathtaking Icelandic landscapes, the characters and the challenge they are grappling with come to life. This book should be used in sociology, psychology, communication, and other classrooms, touching on themes including methodology, small groups, diversity, and leadership. Students will love Leavy’s creativity, skill in character development, and ability to take them where they may not have previously journeyed, both geographically and interpersonally. Thought-provoking, intriguing, and clever, Spark left me wanting to live in the world that Leavy has created--a world of beauty and possibility."--Robin Patric Clair, PhD, author of Zombie Seed and the Butterfly Blues; Department of Communication, Purdue University   "This intriguing novel illuminates the blinding force of presumptions--about one’s own capacities, about other people, and, not least, about the 'requirements' of legitimate intellectual inquiry. Perhaps more fundamentally, it is about the possibility of transcending oneself, seeing people for who they truly are, and thinking beyond disciplinary silos. By freeing the creative imagination from its too-tight borders with the help--and even love--of others, this novel suggests, we can fashion new worlds of meaning and value."--Mark Freeman, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Society, College of the Holy Cross   "I have often utilized Leavy’s books in my graduate social work courses. The characters in her novels expand the thought processes of new social workers on topics related to race, sexuality, and privilege. Spark has surpassed expectations. One of the strengths of this novel is how it promotes conversations about intersectionality as it relates to privilege. I am eager to share this remarkable work with my students."--Renita M. Davis, LICSW, Interim Chair, Troy University School of Social Work "Delightful and thought provoking, Spark is a compelling read, whether in or out of the classroom. The novel follows the meeting of a very diverse group of people, with very different opinions and ideas of the world. It’s through these characters and ideas that Leavy encourages the reader to leave all biases at the door."--Taylor D., undergraduate, Raritan Valley Community College   "Leavy brings all of her creativity, craft, and insight to a novel that not only is an enjoyable read but also truly sparks layers of meaningful conversations. A diverse cast of characters is brought together to dive into answering one question. Through this process, readers are invited to explore the intellectual terrain of their own assumptions and biases. What is significant about Spark is how it so beautifully brings each character--and reader--to comprehend how we all arrive at answers that truly matter. Here is a novel that can accompany any class in research methods; it is exemplary of what it means to be multi- and transdisciplinary while celebrating each approach with deep respect. Be prepared to have your ideas spark and grow!"--Celeste Snowber, PhD, Faculty of Education, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada   “In this clever and captivating novel, Leavy shows us how a research project is collaboratively developed from the spark of an idea to research purpose to execution. This is more than a textbook--it is the story of how a group of artists and intellectuals with different skills become a cohesive research team. They must learn how to work with their differences and across research paradigms to see new ways of thinking and to trust in the research process. Spark represents the best of arts-based research from a master of fiction-as-research-method. I will be teaching this book in my undergraduate and graduate classes."--Sandra L. Faulkner, PhD, Professor of Communication and Director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Bowling Green State University   "Leavy, one of the leading voices in arts-based research methods, has penned an engaging novel that illustrates for new scholars the different ways that diverse people come to understand the world--and understand it together. Spark does as its title suggests, kindling readers’ openness to other people, other ideas, other ways of seeing and being. Modern societies need this skill set more than ever. Through archetypal characters you’ll recognize--either in yourself or in people you have met and worked with--and a richly described setting at once alien and familiar, Leavy teaches key research processes that might be used to tackle even seemingly intractable problems. Students will find the novel to be a gentle, entertaining introduction to the research mindset, with vivid characters, dialogue, and scenes that can serve as springboards for deeper, more grounded discussions than those afforded by a traditional textbook. The suggestions for creative writing, classroom use, and research activities provide hours of follow-up opportunities to help turn the novel’s spark into a burning excitement for cooperative research."--Marcus B. Weaver-Hightower, PhD, Professor of Educational Foundations and Research, University of North Dakota   "A thoroughly enjoyable and thoughtful read! Seven brilliant thinkers from diverse disciplines and countries have just five days to answer a deceptively simple question. This beautifully written novel, set in Iceland’s magical landscape, draws readers into a puzzle the group must solve, while simultaneously exploring characters’ personal struggles. The gradual peeling back of layers, intriguing premise, realistic dialogue, and abundant food for thought make Spark not only a page turner, but also an intellectual treasure that will stick with me."--Christine Sleeter, PhD, author of The Inheritance; Professor Emerita, College of Professional Studies, California State University, Monterey Bay

Spark is a breath of fresh air. This is an uplifting, original, well-written novel. I was thoroughly engaged following the cast of characters as they tried to unravel the meaning of a dumbfounding question and discovered things about themselves and others along the way. There were great life reminders about the importance of the process over the outcome and challenging oneself to push past comfort zones. We all need those reminders from time to time. As a former teacher, one of the most gratifying parts was after finishing the “tour de force” one is given “points to ponder” and questions to consider. Thanks, I needed that!

This book is that rarest of works, a great story and a great, deep message. The cast of characters are all interesting and important to the story. Nothing is wasted in this book, every phrase, every nuance is a vital building block in constructing the plot and the great conclusion. An important read, one that will 'spark' so many different emotions, and will definitely carry you to the top of the mountain, and out of your comfort zone.

An interesting read, not sure what I was expecting, but not disappointed either. It’s hard not to pause and have a think on a key phrase, or comment from the story. But that is the idea isn’t it? I so wanted the answer to the question... silently forbidding myself to skip to the end... but it was ultimately all those key thoughts (I actually highlighted them along the way) that made me think that provided the answer.

"Spark" creates a sense of awe and wonder about human connection and the exciting possibilities that can develop when groups of diverse people come together to solve problems. The book reminds us that the journey to find the solution to a problem is always filled with a great deal of personal growth and discovery. Leavy ‘s gift to weave an engaging narrative makes for an inspiring read, as well as creating new bridges between the social sciences and arts based research.

I loved this novel so much. It read like an Agatha Christie mystery that had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it would all turn out. As with every novel she's ever written, I only meant to read the first chapter but was hooked by the opening line and didn't look up until to my horror I was done. Each character begins as a narrow archetype but is given space to grow and challenge our expectations about how we see each other and ourselves. But as someone who loves to use literature in my History courses, this is the first novel I've ever read where I immediately thought it would work amazingly well in a research methods class. Leavy cleverly gives us a glimpse into the ways different academic disciplines approach the 'truth' illustrating the surprisingly different ways to see and accumulate knowledge. In this way, Leavy has perhaps written the perfect novel for use in any discipline including the sciences, humanities, and cultural studies. A book that both accessible to college students and professors alike, offering a range of helpful tips about the ways to ask big questions and unpack research. It's also so rare to read a novel about academics that moves beyond narrow stereotype of the arrogant know-it-all narcissist. Finally, if you need more, it truly reads like a cinematic look at one of the most picturesque regions of the world. Well worth a read.

I loved this novel. Set in the richly described Icelandic landscape, Spark is really about how one woman who has lost the magic in her own life, as so many of us do, finds new bravery when she attends an exclusive, invitation-only retreat. Through meeting people from around the world, being forced to work together to answer a mystifying question that kept me in suspense until the last page, and exploring spectacular sites, she discovers things about herself and the world that change her perspective on life. I loved the setting, the characters, and the story. I couldn’t help but place myself in the protagonist’s shoes, which I think is exactly what the author intended. I’m going to try and be a little braver and kinder in my own life. This is a novel for everyone. It’s really beautiful.

A MUST-READ. I couldn’t put this book down. It’s the definition of a page-turner. Spark is a stunning little novel that filled me with joy and inspiration. There’s so much divisiveness and ugliness in our society these days. This novel is the antidote. It filled me with hope. We can learn to see past our differences. Each of us can also nurture our own spark, no matter how small it has become, it is never too late to live the life we were meant to live and to overcome our fears. Everyone should read this novel. It is light and could have only come from acclaimed and beloved author Patricia Leavy. Buy it for yourself and everyone in your life. It’s the perfect gift for anyone you love. Appropriate for all ages. I’m going to read it again when I need a little inspiration.

In these tumultuous political times, everyone should read this book. Spark responds to how we can make decisions that are in everyone's best interest, even when we approach the problem from very different backgrounds and perspectives. It's a wonderful story, impossible to put down, and you walk away from it thinking about how you interact with different types of people in your own life, and how you might do that better. I'd love to give a copy of this to all of the politicians in D.C. right now!Professors -- this would be a fantastic book for any course dealing with critical thinking, communication, or research methods. It would also be an excellent choice for a university-wide book in common program. I will be adding it to my own courses.

Penn is a gifted writer I'm shocked that this is his first book and his topic and hero are wonderful. Bruce Morrison and his band of peacemakers along with the bravery shown by men of both sides who decided to put down their arms and find a new way are all to be admired. And the leaders of great Britain the Republic of Ireland and our own President Bill Clinton provided to Gravatar us and the wisdom to charted different path. The world owes Bruce Morrison and George Mitchell in particular A tremendous debt of gratitude. They put their reputations and often times their own lives on the line. As an Irish-American and a former constituent of Congressman Morrison I can't tell you how much I appreciate his work and the fact that Mr. Rodine has finally undertaken to write this wonderful uplifting story of peace and success. thank you all from the bottom my heart. Thank you for your work thank you for your success and thank you for a wonderful story being told it's entirety for the first time by a great author who took the time to do the research and tell the whole story. If you have a drop of Irish blood in you or if you're concerned about ethnic and/or religious conflict you must read this book. And I can assure you you will enjoy it.

This is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary event--the end of a centuries-old sectarian civil war that was so much a part of the fabric of the late twentieth century that it was part of the world's wallpaper. But even more extraordinary than the event was the agent who brought it about--a junior Connecticut Congressman who had resigned his seat to run an apocalyptically unsuccessful campaign for governor. In prose journalistically clear and direct, Penn Rhodeen tells the story of Bruce Morrison, who rose from political catastrophe to assume a pivotal role in British, Irish, and American political history. His electoral career in ruins, Morrison recognized the rich potential for American intervention in the perpetually stalled Anglo-Irish negotiations, which as our story opens was then so deep in the freezer that the Irish North was ruled directly from Westminster. Morrison recognized that other Irish-American politicians had taken themselves out of the peace game by focussing attention on the moderates and excluding extremists. The extremists, Morrison knew, were the ones throwing bombs, and thus the ones who had to be brought to the table, which could only happen through the efforts of brokers unaffiliated with any of the combatants.Morrison had a friend in high places who shared his views. Though Yale Law School classmate Bill Clinton persisted in his pre-electoral enthusiasm for Morrison's project after he achieved the presidency, the expediencies of office kept him from issuing Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams a US visa. Nevertheless Clinton endorsed an unbelievably politically risky US role in the brokering of a peace that had eluded generations. To that end he committed as America's envoy former Senator George Mitchell, who on Good Friday 1998 ended years of negotiations with an accord that ended a war whose roots were in the twelfth century.Rhodeen's narrative deftly navigates the numerous obstacles that get in the way of a clear story. Every side of the conflict--British, loyalist, nationalist--was itself split into multiple factions, often designated with nearly identical acronyms. Rhodeen never leaves the reader guessing as to who was who, or who wanted what. More importantly, he makes us at home with the political and cultural contexts--Irish-American, fading British Imperial, simmering Irish Nationalist--that informed and impeded the politicians' efforts to get a deal done and stop the killing.Bruce Morrison changed the world forever, and for good. This is a story that deserves to be heard.

Penn Rhodeen’s Peacerunner is the incredible story of how peace came to Northern Ireland in 1998 after a hateful thirty year cycle of violence and death. One reviewer wrote, “If you have a drop of Irish blood in you or if you're concerned about ethnic and/or religious conflict you must read this book.”My maternal grandmother’s Scotch-Irish grandparents and children from Belfast, Ireland arrived in the port of New York on 22 April 1870. Through DNA, family members who are Presbyterian like mine are often considered Scotch-Irish or English. My Scotch-Irish grandmother, Martha Frew and six siblings were born in Frackville, Pennsylvania in the late 1800s. John Frew was a coal miner and Mia Frew a public school teacher living her entire life in Frackville. My mother, daughter of Martha Frew, was born in Pennsylvania to Scotch-Irish and German parents.Warfare between the Irish and the British began in 1169 when Anglo-Normans invaded Ireland. Rhodeen wrote, “The cycle of English colonization, with its demeaning and dehumanizing treatment of the Irish, and Irish uprising and retaliation, would continue for the next three centuries.”Around the time my wife and I were planning to visit England, my father’s ancestral homeland, a bomb exploded on the 33rd floor of the Post Office tower in London causing extensive damage. The "Kilburn Battalion" of the IRA was allegedly behind the terrorist attack in the early 1970s. Having grown up in the multi-ethnic neighborhood of Easton, Pennsylvania, this was the first I really became keenly aware of a serious problem of ethnic and religious conflict overseas in the UK.For three decades referred to as the Troubles, before the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, Rhodeen wrote, “The ongoing bloody conflict between the IRA, loyalist para-military forces, the RUC - the only armed police force in the UK or Ireland - and the British army made Northern Ireland a place of death and destruction on a scale almost unimaginable to Americans. Sniper fire, calculated assassinations, and bombings could come any place at any time. Over the thirty years of the Troubles, 3,200 people were killed in Northern Ireland – a small place with a population of a little over 1,600,000. An equivalent death toll in the United States would be around 500,000, an unimaginable rate even after 9/11.”Loretta Brennan Glucksman, raised in an Irish neighborhood in Allentown, Pennsylvania, is the granddaughter of four Irish immigrants; her maternal grandfather was a coal miner from Coaldale, Pennsylvania. Now chairman of the American Ireland Fund, Loretta wrote of Peacerunner, “All Irish Americans, no matter which side of the conflict our families were on, should read and remember this story – and pass it on with great pride to our children and grandchildren.”The world owes a debt of gratitude to Bruce Morrison and George Mitchell for bringing peace to Northern Ireland during Bill Clinton’s Presidency. Mega kudos to Penn Rhodeen for writing Peacerunner!

Very informative and well written narrative about the true history of how the peace process in Northern Ireland was pursued. I learned to appreciate the proper role a true politician can play. What patience was needed! Very much worth reading, highly recommended.

It is a valuable book, a well-written, well-told story of the complicated process that made the peace talks in Ireland possible. The story is a lesson in the skill, patience, intelligence and insight that was required to achieve this goal and is a wonderfully interesting tale of politics in action.

Review

“Controversial and enigmatic, the tragic trajectory of Scott-Heron's life and career is expertly examined in this testament to one of the last great radical artists.” ―Kirkus“Baram's exacting, intimate, and sensitive portrait preserves and honors Scott-Herron's unique genius and essential legacy.” ―Booklist“A poignant portrait... of the artist as a black man struggling to make sense of his culture from the 1960s to his death… Baram's appreciative biography offers a glimpse into the complex feelings and thoughts of this Renaissance man we lost much too soon.” ―Publishers Weekly“An addict and a recluse; a genius and a poet; a defacto founder of hip=hop who died in poverty, afraid to open his front door. Baram...traces Gil Scott-Heron's complicated path in the first full-on biographical work devoted to a career as turbulent as it was brilliant.” ―NOLA.com, The Times-Picayune

I'm a long-time Gil Scott-Heron (GSH) fan. Since his passing there have been a few books that tell his story. Gil's memoir, THE LAST HOLIDAY, is interesting but he left lots of holes in his story. Leslie Goffe's book, GSH: A FATHER AND HIS SON, is a great read that tells an interesting father/son story. Marcus Baram's book, PIECES OF A MAN, is the best yet and it's a must-read for any GSH fan. The research is deep, the writing is engaging, and the stories are priceless. Baram shares the most information I've read about Gil's lost years in the 80s and 90s. While it's emotional to read, I enjoyed hearing from Gil's friends and band members discussing his drug addiction issues. Baram also gives us more information in the rift that developed between Gil and his music co-conspirator, Brian Jackson. I will cherish this book for years to come. Thanks Marcus for caring so much to write such a thoughtful biography of a man's whose music has meant so much to me.

This book helped me understand Gil Scott-Heron. Its not a pretty picture. The book starts with a long and sometimes slow discussion of his childhood. While reading it, I wondered if the book would be worth the time. Very quickly this well written story gained momentum and by the mid-point, I could barely put it down.Several decades ago, when I was in High School, I first heard Gil Scott-Heron's In The Bottle, read and listened to some of his other works, and learned of his opposition to using hard drugs. I was amazed and impressed by his radical clarity. In 2010, "The New Yorker" published an excellent piece examining Gil Scott-Heron's (then current) life and dependence on crack cocaine. It was probably the first thing I'd heard about Gill Scott-Heron in 20 years or more. Less than a year later, he was dead. This book helped me understand the man, his greatness and his vanities.

I must admit that I'm extremely biased when it comes to Gil Scott-Heron. He was such a talent, a musical genius, an intellectual par excellence and an artist committed to the improvement of lives of people. I think this book does a great job of capturing the essence of Gil. From his childhood to his musical journey, the brilliance of his unscripted performances, the drug use, the decline in health, it's all here. And it reads like a runaway train, one of those books you can't put down, because you are so eager to see what's next for Gil. If you aren't familiar with Gil Scott-Heron, this book serves as a great introduction. If you are a fan, like myself, this is a tremendous trip down memory lane.

A Great Piece of history on my favorite Author, Poet and Musician of all time Mr. Gil Scott-Heron. I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago in NY and I was blown away by his knowledge. The man was deep and a true revolutionary in a day when all of what he sung about and wrote about is still true to this day. Rest in Peace Mr. Heron you are loved and missed.

A crisp, compelling portrait of an under-recognized poetic genius and cultural icon. Funny, stirring and tragic, it is hard to stop reading once you begin. And the writing is great -- lean and lyrical. One of my favorite lines: “What was striking was Gil’s blend of radicalism with humor: a pie in the face followed by a left hook to the jaw.” Highly, highly recommend this book.

Surprisingly good.Detail is extraordinarily.Good anecdotes that reflect all the celebrities that he happen to have crossed paths with. I’m awestruck!

I took my time reading this book. I guess I just wanted to take it all in piece by piece. Gil Scott-Heron will always be a part of my thoughts. I never really understood his additive behavior, but his life as all of us is our own. This book gave me in site of a man I admired musically and spiritually. His presence will always be present in my creative endeavours.

An exceptional well written book, even though it has such a tragic ending, it was still very uplifting and and covered allthere was to know of such a great artist. Gone all too soon!!!!
