Don't Call Us Dead: Poems

Review

“These poems can’t make history vanish, but they can contend against it with the force of a restorative imagination. Smith’s work is about that imagination―its role in repairing and sustaining communities, and in making the world more bearable. . . . Their poems are enriched to the point of volatility, but they pay out, often, in sudden joy. . . . But they also know the magic trick of making writing on the page operate like the most ecstatic speech.”―The New Yorker“Danez Smith is angry, erotic, politicized, innovative, classical, a formalist, an activist, and blends all of this without seeming to strain. . . . This will be one of the year’s essential books.”―Craig Morgan Teicher, NPR“[A] stunning collection. . . . These pieces pulse with the rhythms and assertiveness one expects from poetry slams.”―The Washington Post“Searing. . . . Smith’s capacity for compassionate invention is epic. . . . Smith races across lexicons and spectra, pushing even the boundaries of typography in wrestling with the dreadful fact that the black male body is imperiled from both within and without.”―Tracy K. Smith, O, The Oprah Magazine“Arguably the year’s most powerful and affecting collection.”―Publishers Weekly, Best Books 2017“Don’t Call Us Dead is poet Danez Smith’s ferocious second collection. With humanity and heart, Smith contemplates the assaults on a black, male body in America ― police brutality, violence, and AIDS, and the resulting culture of danger, suspicion, grief, psychological pain, and resistance.”―BuzzFeed“Smith prophesies an end from which a new beginning might spring. Throughout Don’t Call Us Dead, hope appears as a form of resistance and rebirth.”―The Guardian (UK)“Exceptional. . . . There is pain here but there is so much joy, so much fierce resistance to anything that dares to temper the stories being told here.”―Roxane Gay, Vulture“Smith’s work is astonishing, its power is a seething one. . . . An essential part of every American’s reading experience.”―Nylon“Danez Smith’s astonishing second collection, a finalist for this year’s National Book Award, is a testament to the collective power of the queer black imagination and to Smith’s individual talent. He is one of the most original and powerful poets working today.”―Star Tribune (Minneapolis)“In between rich odes to sexual awakening and love, Smith’s poetry reverberates with an ever-present awareness of the endless fear and latent hurt that accompanies the daily existence of black men in the United States. . . . These are poems you want to wrap your arms around and keep safe.”―Vox“Don’t Call Us Dead . . . may be the greatest book―not just of poetry, but of any writing, period―I’ve read all decade.”―Porochista Khakpour, Bookforum“Smith activates a spectrum of emotions in material that could justifiably remain tragic, bringing pathos and several senses of humor.”―The Nation “These poems are a reminder that there is always at least as much joy as there is violence.”―Rookie“Elegy meets celebration of the black male body on every page. . . . Smith can’t help but be breathtaking in style and substance.”―Virginia Quarterly Review“Aching and elegiac, these poems bless our world in all its ruin, beg it to be otherwise, and begin the bloody work of writing it anew.”―Literary Hub“Danez Smith is a meteorite of the poetry world, blazing new territory with each new book.”―MPR News“Don’t Call Us Dead is an historical commentary, a scientific document, a personal narrative, and a formal poetics. . . . Smith uses every tool of craft at a poet’s disposal to deliver powerful, urgent, deliberate, crucial poems. Don’t miss this book.”―The Rumpus“Smith’s book is like poetic rapture. . . . Read Don’t Call Us Dead start to finish and if your breath takes a beat, that’s the point: Smith is here to call us out, wake us up, tear us down to what is raw.”―The Millions“The result is bittersweet, but the sweetness is real, even when it’s grounded in imagination―partly because that imagination is so grounded in the reality it wants to refuse, but just as much because Smith, in fantasy and in grief, commits to giving pleasure. These poems are a form of entertainment―something far more profound than we tend to admit. Entertainment is more than mere escapism; it’s a form of generosity―a way to knit up the raveled time and materials of lives made ragged. And Smith, at their best, entertains unusually well.”―Kenyon Review“The poet has always been a prophet leading cultural change to the good, and Danez Smith makes a revival of death into song in Don’t Call Us Dead. . . . Danez Smith is making a high niche in evolution, by sourcing his life into indelible art.”―Washington Independent Review of Books“Smith has created in this book a universe of boys―black boys, brown boys, sexualized ‘bois,’ but for every struggling, injured or dead boy, there is a heartbroken mother, a grieving grandmother, a fractured circle of friends―a community joined by loss. Smith has managed to leaven this pathos with praise, humor, and the hope of redemption.”―The Hudson Review“Danez Smith has become one of a generation’s most noticed poets, and for good reason: at once a stunning performer and a tersely effective arranger of words on the page, Smith can address the Black Lives Matter movement, the erasure of black humanity by malign police, and then pivot to vivid, sexy, or scary records from a complex queer sexuality.”―Poets.org“It’s been a while since I’ve read a book of poems where I felt that the poems had to be written, that everything was at stake in the writing of them―that’s how I feel about Danez Smith’s Don’t Call Us Dead, in terms of what the poems address, variously queerness, life on both sides of the divide between HIV- and HIV+, life in the wake of having lost so many friends to the seeming dailiness of police murdering black men in particular, black people more generally. Far, though, from succumbing to despair, Smith makes of joy―of the expression of joy―both a tool for survival and a form of resistance.”―Carl Phillips, Poetry Foundation“[Don’t Call Us Dead] is all the things poetry ought to be but rarely grasps―heartbreaking, funny, sorrowful, surprising.”―Mpls.St.Paul Magazine“Not content to merely allow us to play witness to the horrors of oppression, Smith’s poems pull us into it; they brim with blood, violence, aches and broken bodies. But there is humor, too, and hope, and it’s this hope that elevates the book to its crucial contemporary importance.”―BookPage“These poems decenter through love, erasing margins and reconfiguring the world as a space in which the marginalized body is worthy, the dismissed spirit is honored. They imagine lovingly. They critique lovingly. They mourn and celebrate and insist lovingly.”―Fight and Fiddle“Don’t Call Us Dead rattles the core of the heart and consciousness for a new understanding of self and its singular and collective orientation in the world. . . . This volume is a testament of a lively and courageous human facing the gun, so to speak, interrogating who flexes power and who is on the other end. Smith lifts the fallen body/bodies up to the light, probes the cosmos for a fierce justice, sees in their brothers’ redemption, objects to random forces of violence, of people gone unhonored, resisting oppression.”―Empty Mirror“Luminous and piercing, this collection reassembles shattering realities into a shimmering and sharp mosaic.”―Publishers Weekly, starred review“In this remarkable second collection from Kate Tufts/Lambda Award winner Smith, the content as well as the writing is transcendent.”―Library Journal, starred review“Part indelible elegy, part glorious love song to ‘those brown folks who make / up the nation of my heart,’ Smith’s powerhouse collection is lush with luminous imagery, slick rhythms, and shrewd nods to Lucille Clifton, Beyoncé, and Diana Ross. Incandescent, indispensable, and, yes, nothing short of a miracle.”―Booklist, starred review“This book is poetry as fierce fire. There is such intelligence and fervor in these poems about black men and their imperiled bodies, gay men and their impassioned bodies, what it means to be HIV positive, and so much more. Every poem impressed me, and the level of craft here is impeccable. Loved this one.”―Roxane Gay“Danez Smith’s is a voice we need now more than ever as living, feeling, complex, and conflicted beings. These poems of love extend beyond the erotic into the struggle for unity―not despite the realities of race but precisely because of what race has caused us to make of and do to one another. Don’t Call Us Dead gives me a dose of hope at a time when such a thing feels hard to come by. This is a mighty work, and a tremendous offering.”―Tracy K. Smith, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Life on Mars“In an America that conspires against black, brown, queer, and trans bodies, Danez Smith writes poems of insistence and resistance; they anticipate a better world for all of us ‘where everything is sanctuary & nothing is a gun.’”―D. A. Powell“Danez Smith is an original. . . . If you have ever lost faith, if you want to believe in life, then you must read this book―it will humble and uplift you, leave you understanding that in the face of it all, there is only awe.”―Chris Abani

I had never heard of Danez Smith or his poetry. This book showed up as a recommendation. I was buying a bunch of other books so I thought, why not? What an incredible discovery! I now plan on buying anything he publishes.I'm going to be completely candid. Anytime I see a story about an African-American getting shot by a police officer, I feel terrible but it doesn't feel personal. There is a persistent feeling of helplessness because I can't do anything about it and frustration in the knowledge that, if it doesn't stop soon, it'll get much worse. That being said, as a white person, I only really feel sympathetic as an outsider and relieved that I'm not in their shoes. I don't know how else to feel and I'm ashamed to admit, after the public outcry dies down, I move on with my privileged life as though nothing happened. While reading the first poem in this book, "summer, somewhere," I felt, for the first time, that I understood, as much as I could, the weight that is on the shoulders of an entire race of people in this country.I'm only slightly embarrassed to say that I cried while reading several of the poems. I've been a fan of poetry for most of my life. I've read all the greats - Keats, Frost, Yeats, Whitman, Dickinson, Eliot - and I have never cried. Not once before now. "Don't Call Us Dead" is incredible. I would recommend it to anyone.

This is an amazing book--heartrending and beautifully crafted and important. I got the book from the library first, sat down and read those opening poems (which features some of the many young black men killed by police), and before I knew it, I was in tears. These poems are not easy to read. They are accessible I think, in terms of language and style, which is something I appreciate in poetry, but the content is difficult. I slowed down. I read the books in bits and pieces, and when I was done, I promptly ordered a copy for myself, and then ordered the book for the graduate poetry class I am teaching. Smith's voice is so important, and these poems render the reality that too many young black men, young gay men, face: a history of opression and violence. And yet, there is so much beauty here too.I read a lot of poetry. I'm a poet, and I teach poetry in an MFA program. I read a lot of books that get a lot of hype too. But it has been years since I have been so moved by the beauty, strength and importance of a book. I'm telling everyone I know to read this book. Just read it.

These poems are screams of rage. Many are hard to read not because they are not beautiful (they are) but because of the poet's anguish and my own collective guilt--there's no way to claim you have done enough.Throughout these poems are lonely black men and boys full of desire and pride and wanting to be wanted. Their experience builds toward an inevitable seroconversion which is replayed a thousand times in different lights (and spotlights). Among my favorites is a poem called "fear of needles":instead of getting testedyou take a blade to your palmhold your ear to the wound.A later poem notes that "the bed where it happened is where I sleep" and blood cells and jail cells are compared and contrasted, but ultimately each is a prison. These poems contain the not-quite-resigned-to-his-fate voice of a black gay HIV-positive man who is going to be killed one way or another, cop bullets or aids complications--as one poem states, "my blood in cahoots with the law."And against all this clamor is juxtaposed the image of a little black boy clutching a dinosaur, who is full of dreams and curiosity and possibility.A delightful, agonizing, harrowing collection.

Wow. This is my first time reading a full collection from Smith and I am so pleased to have read it. How could I be so lucky? No. Worthy. Our black boys gone thank you Danez. You dedicated to them so many pieces. You humanized them in their death. You gave them a place all their own. A paradise. a safe summer.

This book is full of powerful lines, vivid images, and cultural critique may blow your mind or pluck on the veins that lead to your heart. The above line is from "recklessly," one of the longer poems in the book. This book serves a variety of forms that can sharpen your eye and flex your mind. He contributes to a lot of different conversations in race, sexuality, being young, being pos, as well as grappling with what it means to be American and also himself. This book is full of wounds, but reading it, one might heal, or at least learn. An amazing followup to his stunning debut, [insert] boy, Smith, in my eyes, is an American writer to watch closely. I can't wait to see him read live someday, and read whatever he comes out with next

#293,049 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I've been using this book and the accompanying website and app for years, and it is hands-down the best for preparing yourself for a Disney vacation. I'm a Disney parks pro and I still pick up the latest edition when I'm planning a big trip to see what they have to say on the latest developments. For the 2015 edition it was for the new fastpass+ system and the new Harry Potter Diagon Alley section in the Universal parks. Speaking of which, our week-long trip will cover both Universal Studios and Disney World and the Unofficial Guide has prepared us for both, although by far the bulk of the book is devoted to Disney, with smaller sections in the back covering Universal, Seaworld, and the water parks. The Unofficial Guide writers have a particular sense of humor, so make sure you read the introduction first--they care a lot about The World, but don't take it, or themselves, too seriously. This is not the "everybody happy all the time" Disney guide book like so many others you could buy--if an attraction is not worth your time, they will tell you. They have a loving, but critical eye on the mouse that's refreshing in a world of brochures and official videos full of people with cruise-ship commercial smiles on their faces. Keep in mind that their angle is logistics and touring strategy--most of the descriptions are brief, combined with reader ratings, author ratings, and they often throw in a dissenting opinion via a reader comment set off in blue. Then they'll tell you when the best times are to experience that attraction and some common pitfalls to avoid. Sometimes it seems like they tell you to see every attraction before 10 or within 2 hours of closing, but of course that's not actually possible, and it can sound pretty alarmist at times. Keep in mind that they are writing this book for everyone visiting WDW in the middle of high summer as well as those going during slower times of the year, so keep your particular circumstance in mind. If you read this book you will be VERY prepared for Disney, just don't let it make you anxious. Read it, be aware of the things that you really want to do and want to avoid, do your planning and scheduling ahead of time, then relax on your vacation knowing that everything is taken care of. Also, this is a very large book--discussion of the parks and attractions don't even start until page 500. It's meant for reference, so read the introduction then leaf through the rest of it for the information you need at the time. I'd definitely recommend looking through the first 100 pages on planning since that will help you know what to schedule and when, then you can look through the rest as needed. The biggest benefit to the Unofficial Guide is the touring plans--there are standard-tear out copies in the back for all of the parks, and there are more customizable versions online where you can remove what you don't want to do and add in what you want to do, then their system will optimize the plan so you hit everything at the right time for shorter lines and it will even tell suggest what times to schedule your fastpass+ options for what rides, which I find very helpful. If you already have FP+ times scheduled, just plug them in and it will work around them. Then once you have it all set, you can either print our your plan, or download the app to your smartphone and tick off the steps and readjust as you go. Especially if you get off-plan, you can re-optimize on the go and it will still save you time in line. And it WILL save time! You just have to commit to getting there ahead of the crowd and knocking out some of the headliners first, you don't even have to rush. I've tried it and it totally works. However, the fewer people (and the fewer children) you have in your party will affect how quickly you can move through the parks--your mileage may vary. NOTE: full use of the website and the app require a subscription, usually ~$10-12 for a year and there are plenty of discounts to be had, including one for buying the book. Another huge benefit to the website is a well-researched crowd calendar that can help you decide when to visit, and even what parks to visit on what days. There are metric tons of information on Disney to be found in books and online but these are the only guys who do touring plans and crowd calendars in an exact, researched manner that is truly helpful for decision making and not just general suggestions. These are the researchers and the number-crunchers, and they have laid in a lot of hours and their own dollars (they are not affiliated with the Disney Company in any way) in order to equip readers with complete information before and during their Disney vacation. It can be overwhelming, and you will probably have a great Disney vacation even if you don't plan a bit. But with the My Magic+ system, more and more Disney is requiring pre-planning for popular experiences--dining, rides, meet & greets--that make your expensive Disney vacation really special, and so you don't miss out. If you want to meet Anna and Elsa, if you want to eat in the Be Our Guest Restaurant, if you want to ride Soarin' without waiting for an hour--you really need to pre-plan, and this book is the best way to be aware of all the options and get all your ducks in a row. Seriously, it's the best way to get as much value out of your Disney vacation as possible, just don't let it make you crazy.

This book is pretty much a one-stop planning assistant; it contains everything you need to make the right choices when planning your Walt Disney World Vacation. Unlike the sponsored guides like Birnbaums, the authors are given free reign to give honest evaluations that aren't all rainbows and unicorns. You'll get the most out of it if you read BEFORE you book your trip since it contains really useful information such as resort information, crowds, weather, dining, and more. More importantly, there's no fluff. The authors have really thought long and hard over each edition on what to include and what to leave out to ensure you aren't overwhelmed.Families have two great options when planning a WDW vacation: use a respected travel agent or resources like this book. Those that prefer to make the decisions themselves will appreciate what this book offers. Those that are overwhelmed by all the choices will likely find a travel agent most helpful. A travel agent can help find deals better and they can also use their clout if something goes wrong while you are on your vacation in Florida. But this book gives you all you need to plan out your day, which rides to go on and when, and how to make the most of the trip once you are there. If anything, a travel agent AND this book are a great way to ensure a really successful and less stressful trip. But I have admittedly never needed a travel agent and really prefer to do all the planning myself so I can tailor it most effectively to what I want to get out of my vacation.I bought my first Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World back in 1993 for a honeymoon trip. The information from that earlier edition was incredibly valuable - it helped me save time and money and made the vacation that much better as a result. I learned how to avoid long wait times for attractions as well as which restaurants are worth my time and which are not. Now, returning for the first time since 1993, it was a no brainer to get this book. I have to say that the difference between then and now is social media: I can youtube to see walking tours of the resorts and what the rooms look like as well as go on Facebook forums like the Walt Disney World Insider to ask questions in real time and get immediate answers and opinions. Anything the book doesn't cover I can find out immediately in a forum or video. As well, just following Vloggers as they visit the Parks really helps me decide which rides to Fast Pass and how to navigate/enjoy the Walt Disney World Experience. As in 1993, my 2018 trip was a success thanks in no small part to having purchased and read this book. Since I was going with my niece and nephew, I also purchased the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World With Kids, which had a bit more information on caring for and keeping young ones happy. Considering the cost of the vacation and how things can get very expensive, time consuming, stressful, or unhappy fast, this is probably the best dollars I've ever put into a vacation.Of note is that those who want more personalized attention can subscribe to the book's online sight for ten dollars or so. It gives you a planning countdown to-do list, at the moment crowd estimates, ability to fax your resort in advance for room requests (as well as room pictures), and more. You get email updates when park opening hours change, rides are closed, and more. You definitely don't need to spend the money on the upgrade since the Facebook forums are so useful for asking questions and because the website feels primitive and can be difficult to use. I did get some use out of that ten dollars but learned a lot more from the Facebook forums, to be honest.

As a new Christian, it's the story of Paul that ended up being the keystone connecting all the dots for me. I started searching for more information on this man, this apostle, and when I found A Man of Grit and Grace, I had no idea what to expect. Charles Swindoll provided some incredible insight, sticking to only what history knows as fact about Paul, and intertwining the story of his life, from rabid persecutor of Christ's earlier followers to devoted bondservant of the Lord. I appreciate this book, which came to me at just the right time. All by God's Grace.

3 things I like:--------------// 1 // In just about every chapter, there are modern-day illustrations to help the reader relate: from Abraham Lincoln's journey to presidency to Timothy McVeigh's last words before execution. It makes the book very 'readable'.// 2 // It is well-researched in terms of the sequence of events in Paul's life. And our attention is brought to what we tend to overlook when we read the Bible. One example is the years between Paul's conversion till he joined Barnabas at Antioch.// 3 // Last but not least, there are pointers at the end of each chapter for applying what one learns.--------------It's a great book for anyone desiring to follow Christ, especially those who are discipling and mentoring others.

This is not your typical biography. If you are looking for a straight forward recounting of Paul's life, read The Apostle by John Pollock, which is quoted several times in this book. This book not only follows Paul's life, it also provides application from his life. The author uses Paul's life as shown through Scripture to provide timeless truths for our lives. I wish I could have heard the sermons, because this is how God intended His Word to be taught. Since I couldn't, I feel blessed that I could receive this teaching in book form. I hope that you are similarly blessed when you read this book.

Paul's life was never dull. First appearing in the New Testament as a violent enemy of Christ, Paul later went on to not only put his faith in the risen Lord but to pen thirteen letters of the New Testament--in the midst of being beaten, shipwrecked, snakebitten, imprisoned, and chased out of town. Let Charles Swindoll be your guide as you travel down the road to Damascus with Paul and discover the passion for Jesus that drove this hero of the faith.

Found this to be very informative and inspiring so far and have only just begun to read it.Nice quality paper and binding.A quailty production. It's a big thick book and a long read for me...I'm old... Large print would have been nice.No complaints whatsoever. But then it would have been two volumes.Certainly got my money's worth !

This is a great book. It is mentioned in the book that it is a book about God. “Even though Paul is the main character, it really isn’t about Paul ... The story is really all about God.” And how God used this wonderful man ... the Apostle Paul.  Yours in Christ,Alex

Paul was formerly Saul, a man who was persecuting early Christians when he himself became a follower of Jesus. At that time his name was changed to Paul. "A Man of Grace and Grit" gives more explanation of the suffering Paul endured after becoming a Christian as recorded in the Bible. It is very challenging and encouraging.

Charles Swindoll does a wonderful job of talking Paul the man and his struggles, faith and joy in his ministry. Then he applies it directly to our life (where we live with our own struggles, faith & joy). Not only that, but he adds his own personal experiences that show he has applied these lessons to his own life. I plan to order the other books in the series. I must have ordered a used book because this one had marks and notes in it from a previous reader. I'll order new ones of the othes so I can make my own marks and notes. :)

About the Author

Our location in the Wisconsin northwoods helps keep Willow Creek Press off the publishing world's radar. Around here, we're more accustomed to landing walleyes and muskies than big books and authors - events hardly worthy of note in Publisher's Weekly. But, a few years ago we did get noticed with the release of Just Labs, a unique and colorful tribute to Labrador retrievers. The book quickly became a bestseller (now with 500,000 copies in print) and frankly startled us with its success. We were not surprised for long, however, and now an entire line of popular Willow Creek Press titles evokes the myriad joys of dog and cat ownership. Today we are known for high-quality, light-hearted books and the best Just breed calendars in the country.

The long wait for the next book in the Nichelle Clark series is over! It is everything you expected and more. This is a fabulous series by Lyndee Walker that will grab you from page 1.Nichelle is in a meeting with her boss when Trudy comes in with an offer Nichelle can't turn down: the chance to cover a speech given by the President's husband at the same time as the speech given by the President which is covered by Trudy. Still in the meeting going over the day's edition, Nichelle gets a text from Kyle quickly followed by one from Aaron. When she meets with Kyle, an ATF agent and former boyfriend, it's to find out a body of a call girl has been found...in the governor's office. The deeper Nichelle gets into the investigation, she is beginning to wonder who she can trust, who is friend or foe. Will the action she takes in good faith affect her dream of covering a presidential speech?Just like the previous 6 books in this series, it is non-stop action, cleverly plotted with a twist I never saw coming. When I read the last word, I thought Wow! If you have never read the Nichelle Clark books, you are missing out with one of the best series out there. If you have read this series, then you are in for a treat with Deadly Politics. Please note: I was given a copy of this book from the author

Another big win for LynDee Walker, she never let's you down with Nichelle, keeps you guessing until the end and you still get it wrong. I love this series, always a great read. Keep them coming please!!

I loved this book! I loved how characters interacted with each other. I couldn't put this book down.

Nichelle Clarke gets a call from Kyle Miller, who reveals something that is to be kept off the record concerning Lakshmi Drake. Nichelle knows Lakshmi, whom she had tried to warn. Nichelle went nosing on the internet into Lakshmi and noted a picture on social media, which disappeared right before her eyes.Lakshmi's body was found on the governor's desk, and from social media, she was seeing his son. The more Nichelle dug, the more stone walls she hit. When Nichelle decides to release a story, she doesn't realize the danger that is involved, which includes herself. She, also, doesn't know who her friends are because she knows something is being kept from her. Her friends wouldn't lie to her, would they?Great thriller that kept me guessing!I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Deadly Politics, the seventh book in the Nichelle Clarke thriller series, finds Nichelle going from excitement about a political assignment to ..... a dead body in the governor's office. The murder investigation quickly becomes a room of trick mirrors for Nichelle -- who can she trust? What's the truth? The questions pile up, and each piece of information adds to the mystery. If she doesn't figure out this puzzle, the result could well be deadly, really deadly. In Deadly Politics, Nichelle is gritty and tenacious. I believe this is my favorite Nichelle Clarke book to date. I highly recommend it! I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I purchased one as well.

If you like strong women, a very fast pace, intriguing mysteries, a stud-ly boyfriend and an ex who still likes her, then read this book!!Nichelle Clarke is an accomplished news reporter who has been at the center of not just reporting the news, but solving the crimes. She is intuitive, fast-thinking and well-regarded by local law enforcement, to the point where they actually encouraged her participation in the investigation. This seventh book in the series presents Nichelle as more sure of herself and her abilities, just as she has grown in her relationship with bad-boy Joey.A great fun read that had me staying up well past bedtime, unable to put it down. Highly recommended!!

This is one of my favorite Nichelle books so far, and I hope they never stop coming!! I couldn't put the book down, just kept reading to find out what was next, and yet, I didn't want it to end because it was such a fantastic read! I love when a series continues and you feel like these characters are "friends" of yours- you can't help but want to continue to be a part of their lives and see what happens to them next! Bring on more Nichelle Clark!!!

This isn't the same Nichelle from the first six books in this series. If you like LynDee Walker's newest series featuring Faith McClellan you will like the new Nichelle. I don't. The final outcome was riveting, high tension and gory. No longer any cozy components.Previously this series was titled: High Heels Mysteries but there were very few mentions of exclusive footwear. This latest episode the references to Louboutin and Manolo are constant - almost like someone is trying too hard to remind us who Nichelle is since there has been a long break between books 6 and 7.I give the book a 4/5 because it is well written overall and they mystery is well done.I received an ARC from the author which I very much appreciate. I just miss my old Nichelle.

Blacktop Cowboys: Riders on the Run for Rodeo Gold, by Ty Phillips

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. With gritty tough-guy prose and an unerring eye for details that capture the guts and frailty of the human condition, Phillips has crafted an enthralling tale of the modern bulldogging cowboy. A reporter for the Modesto (Calif.) Bee, Phillips spent a year on the road with "one loose-knit band of cowboys, mostly steer wrestlers" during the 2004 Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association season. From the dusty arenas of Norco, Calif., and Cody, Wyo., to the glitzy, sexed-up Strip in Las Vegas, Phillips centers this rip-snorting yarn on Luke Branquino, a tobacco-chewing, womanizing up-and-comer from California, and Travis Cadwell, an old-timer trying to find the glory one last time. In Phillips's powerful language, Branquino is big in body and character, and on the endless rodeo circuit he drinks, wrestles thousand-pound steers to the ground and makes it with the ladies with equal abandon. In the harsh reality of the arena, the aging Cadwell "felt like he was embarrassing himself... a new and entirely ugly feeling." This is a raunchy, insightful delight. 16 pages b&w photos not seen by PW. (Nov.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

Luke Branquinho is a young, up-and--coming rodeo cowboy looking for his first major title. Travis Cadwell, Luke's best friend, is a grizzled veteran of the sport at the ripe old age of 36. Over the course of the 2004 rodeo season, each tries to fulfill a personal quest. Oh, and have a lot of fun, too. Phillips chronicles the season from start to finish, taking us inside the world of competitive steer wrestling and showing that pretty much everything we thought we knew about the sport was either wrong, grossly inaccurate, or just plain silly. For aficionados of the rodeo circuit, this is one of those books that will get read, passed around, discussed, picked apart, and then elevated to the level of classic. It's also, for the novice reader, a detailed and informative introduction to this unusual sport--although, for its participants, perhaps calling is a better word. From the moment I read the three sample pages I knew I had to read this book. I grew up always wanting to dog steers, and have liked Luke for as long as I could remember. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in February of 2013, and he helped me realize my life wasn't over. I loved every part of this book from start to finish, and was great full to be allowed behind the velvet rope to see what rodeo life is all about. Cowboys have a code they live by, and you'll never understand it til you read this book. The fraternity type antics, and long nights of the stories portrayed in this book had me laughing tears several times. Yes the book has some foul language, but before you judge these cowboys are calious men, trust me as a otr driver I can relate...The road changes a man. I would like to see a sequel to this book!

... the more they remain the same. For some time I've been trying to find a book that tells it like it was, just "going down the road", back in the late 60's. Blacktop Cowboys has accomplished it. Though it's 2006 instead of '66-'69 and we sure weren't chasing any NFR standings, the feel is the same. Weren't no cell phones or fancy trailers with sleeper compartments back then and I ran with the "roughstock" crowd, not the ropers or doggers; but, this book transported me back in time. It was fun to recall what it was like to run from "show" to "show" traveling how and with who you could, the harsh practical joking that was always going on and the ever present cold beer. I long searched for a story of what it's like to pursue your dreams, on a shoestring, free of most encumberances that life later puts on us, that describes the pure enjoyment of that freedom. Ty Phillips has accomplished it.I suppose if one hasn't cowboyed some they won't truly appreciate some of the nuances herein, but if you have, you will. It provided me the chance to revisit one of the most carefree and idyllic times of my life. Thank you, Ty.

I suppose if you didn't know anything about rodeo cowboys and their on-the-road lifestyle told in a somewhat raunchy way, this might have been an exciting summer for author, Ty Phillips. I was hoping for more, as I am familiar with such rodeo cowboys and there was nothing new here for me. Like reading about a wild party - it was more fun if you were at the party than merely reading about it, or hearing from a friend who was allowed a peek inside.

This is a real fun book and depicts the way to rodeo guys live. Some of the language is crude, but that is part of what makes the book so real. Having grown up around to rodeo cowboys, my hat is off to the author for a true to life book on chasing a championship.

This book was great! Hard to put down. I think this book would be great for people who have no idea how much time and effort it takes to make it to the NFR. Very well written

Luke is my very favorite cowboy so enjoyed reading the book very much. Gave me a whole new perspective on Luke and rodeo cowboys in general....not that it really surprised me. Ty Phillips definitely did not sugarcoat it!

Phillips takes all those fans of professional rodeo on the road at 85 miles an hour in a 350 pickup, pulling an alumumum trailer loaded with horses and living space.Due to the descriptive skills of the author, the reader becomes a silent witness to the good, the bad, and the ugly side of life with the rodeo cowboy. I couldn't put the book down.

A terrilbe waste of a chance to portray the modern western world of the cowboy. I live in Texas, ride cutting horses, and consider myself a part of this western culture....and looked forward to reading an inside story of the rodeo world. But the author's writing style was so crude, repetative and boring that I had to fight to keep on reading, hoping that the story line would actually get going in some kind of intelligent manner. That never happened. Judging from the other reviews, I seem to stand alone in my evaluation....so much so that I wonder if we all read the same book. The opening sentence in the first paragraph on the first page..."unzipped his pants and began pissing into a fresh pile of horse manure"...should be a dead give-away of what the author seems to think is brilliant writing. The cowboy way of life is rough on the edges and unsophisticated in many ways, to be sure. But the author clouds a potentially great story line with this constant graphic description of bad behavior and crude, vulgar conduct. I get it already! The reader is beaten over the head with it, and the chance to tell the real story of what drives these men is lost.
