As a new Christian, it's the story of Paul that ended up being the keystone connecting all the dots for me. I started searching for more information on this man, this apostle, and when I found A Man of Grit and Grace, I had no idea what to expect. Charles Swindoll provided some incredible insight, sticking to only what history knows as fact about Paul, and intertwining the story of his life, from rabid persecutor of Christ's earlier followers to devoted bondservant of the Lord. I appreciate this book, which came to me at just the right time. All by God's Grace.
3 things I like:--------------// 1 // In just about every chapter, there are modern-day illustrations to help the reader relate: from Abraham Lincoln's journey to presidency to Timothy McVeigh's last words before execution. It makes the book very 'readable'.// 2 // It is well-researched in terms of the sequence of events in Paul's life. And our attention is brought to what we tend to overlook when we read the Bible. One example is the years between Paul's conversion till he joined Barnabas at Antioch.// 3 // Last but not least, there are pointers at the end of each chapter for applying what one learns.--------------It's a great book for anyone desiring to follow Christ, especially those who are discipling and mentoring others.
This is not your typical biography. If you are looking for a straight forward recounting of Paul's life, read The Apostle by John Pollock, which is quoted several times in this book. This book not only follows Paul's life, it also provides application from his life. The author uses Paul's life as shown through Scripture to provide timeless truths for our lives. I wish I could have heard the sermons, because this is how God intended His Word to be taught. Since I couldn't, I feel blessed that I could receive this teaching in book form. I hope that you are similarly blessed when you read this book.
Paul's life was never dull. First appearing in the New Testament as a violent enemy of Christ, Paul later went on to not only put his faith in the risen Lord but to pen thirteen letters of the New Testament--in the midst of being beaten, shipwrecked, snakebitten, imprisoned, and chased out of town. Let Charles Swindoll be your guide as you travel down the road to Damascus with Paul and discover the passion for Jesus that drove this hero of the faith.
Found this to be very informative and inspiring so far and have only just begun to read it.Nice quality paper and binding.A quailty production. It's a big thick book and a long read for me...I'm old... Large print would have been nice.No complaints whatsoever. But then it would have been two volumes.Certainly got my money's worth !
This is a great book. It is mentioned in the book that it is a book about God. “Even though Paul is the main character, it really isn’t about Paul ... The story is really all about God.â€Â And how God used this wonderful man ... the Apostle Paul.  Yours in Christ,Alex
Paul was formerly Saul, a man who was persecuting early Christians when he himself became a follower of Jesus. At that time his name was changed to Paul. "A Man of Grace and Grit" gives more explanation of the suffering Paul endured after becoming a Christian as recorded in the Bible. It is very challenging and encouraging.
Charles Swindoll does a wonderful job of talking Paul the man and his struggles, faith and joy in his ministry. Then he applies it directly to our life (where we live with our own struggles, faith & joy). Not only that, but he adds his own personal experiences that show he has applied these lessons to his own life. I plan to order the other books in the series. I must have ordered a used book because this one had marks and notes in it from a previous reader. I'll order new ones of the othes so I can make my own marks and notes. :)
