As far as the "A Very Short Introduction" goes, this book is a little bit of an outlier. It lacks the novel approach that we tend to see in the series, which encourages us to buy them. Despite that minor oddity, Close's "Particle Physics: A Very Short Introduction" is a wonderful member of the series, because it doesn't derive its value from the novelty that typifies Oxford University Press's series. The value of this work comes from the incredibly potent condensation of material that comprises it. In recently doing a survey of basic particle physics literature, I read a number of books, a number of them introductory, and I was surprised to find that the information presented in this book still had a few bits and pieces that the others missed. Therefore, if you are in the business of wanting to know quite a bit of the basics of particle physics, but without fluff, this book is the way to go. Also, the historical treatment is rather satisfying, insofar as developing a context for the scientific content.Presentation may be an issue for some, as Close gives a just-the-facts-ma'am approach. If you are looking for an introduction is a little less stodgy and a bit more fun, I recommend considering the following, instead: "The Brittanica Guide to Particle Physics," "From Atoms to Quarks," or "The Elusive Neutrino: A Subatomic Detective Story." It is a give and take: Close's introduction has more material and the coherency of the presentation cannot be beat, but you give up style. Overall, if I am recommending a particle physics book to an undergrad, Close is the way to go. Otherwise, it really is a matter of taste and what you are looking to get out of the book, especially if entertainment is a value (the one-star review for this book was given for this reason, but, as I said, it is a matter of what you want to get out of the book, so beware).

This book is one of the Very Short Introductions series by Oxford University Press. It seems to play enough role as an introduction to particle physics for general audience with concise volume of about 130 total pages. If you are a freshman student in physics before learning modern physics in sophomore course, I'd like you to read this book. It does not only teach the basics about fundamental particles, but also explains particle accelerators and detectors in detail with real pictures, and discuss the future prospects of particle physics. Before I read this book, I didn't know why some accelerators have circular shape and how they work. It was good to know the mechanism. Overall, it is a good book. But after about the first two thirds of it, many unsatisfactory points emerge.1. Some non-logical reasoning -- At page 90, it explains why individual quarks cannot be separated. Immediately after that, it says,It is thus that the effects of colour charges become 'strong' at large distances.2. Some severe typos -- For example,Electromagnetic radiation was set free and the universe because transparent as light could roam unhindered across space. (page 114)3. Some vague points. It explains about CP symmetry (page 127) but didn't explain what it is. In the middle, it gives an impression implicitly that readers will come to know the relationship between the dominance of matter over antimatter and the 'accident' of three generations (page 103, 104), but there seems to be no clear explanation on it until the end, just calling it an important future problem at the end (page 115). As far as I know, the dominance of matter is solved by the CP violation, and that the 'accident' of three generations is the only problem.

I just love these small books. You get a nice, brief overview of a particular subject, and there are many subjects covered by these books. In this book, Frank Close, professor of physics at Oxford University, enlightens us on the nature of the particles that make up our universe.He begins by discussing the nature of matter, atoms, and forces. We then get a feel for the relative size of the constituents of our world from the very small (angstroms and Fermi) to the very large (the universe). We are provided with a good explanation of the electron volt (eV) and what it means when trying to ascertain the nature of the atom and the protons, neutrons, quarks, and electrons that compose it. There is some discussion of cyclotrons and synchrotrons, the effects of relativity on the accelerated particles, and the different types of colliders in use today.The author spends a chapter discussing the various particle detection methods from the early techniques to the present, such as the cloud chamber, emulsions, bubble chambers, spark chambers, proportional chamber, drift chamber, and silicon strip detectors. We learn also about the neutrino detection methods via the SuperKamiokande experiment and the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory - all very interesting stuff. Following this, we get an introduction into the weird world of quarks, such as the charm, strange, bottom, and top quarks, concluding with a short discussion on why the world consists of matter rather than antimatter.

Frank is a great writer and scientist. He gives good simple explanations of the subject without resorting to a series of formulas. He starts off by explaining atoms. They are not like what we learned in school as miniature solar systems. They are a cloud of electrons around a very very tiny nucleus, with a tremendous amount of nothing between. He describes in detail Baryons - Protons and Neutrons; Mesons - Quarks and Anti quarks. Later things get a bit heady when he describes Sparticles, Strangeness, Baryon Resonance, Leptons, Rho, Omega Phi, Pion, Etas, and Charm Quarks. (But hang in there, it gets better.) He then goes into how atoms were built up from the big bang. Finally the subjects at the end cover, Super-symmetry, Mass and the Higgs, Quark Gluon Plasma, Antimatter and Matter and Future questions. He truly explains things with understandable language.

Chapter 1: I Need My Cap   My cap has a Speed Accelerator button. Should I push it? Mom hates when flames shoot out of my shoes. Even pretend ones. Clint McCool doesn’t need those rocket engines, anyway. I have fast feet.   Varrrrooooom! I fly down the stairs!   Varrrrooooom! I rush outside!   Oh no. Turtles are on the sidewalk!   Screeeech! I put on the brakes.   Hmm. Can I run on top of their shells? Nope. These aren’t real turtles. They’re kids with big backpacks. They walk so slow. Did they forget? Today Sol-Ray Man is coming to our school!   Sol-Ray Man is the most super superhero ever. He uses the sun’s rays to power up. He zooms to the disaster. He activates his light beams. He saves the planet three times in every episode. And today he’s going to tell me how.   I zigzag around the turtles.   “Wait for me, Walter!” Mom yells. That’s right. She called me Walter. She named me Walter after my grandpa. What a disaster! Luckily, I knew what to do. I named myself. Clint McCool.   “Hi, Clint McCool!” Marco shouts. He’s at the corner with his mom.   I run up to him. He’s the best Best Friend ever. He always calls me by my real name. He’s supersmart. He made the buttons that control my powers. He tied each one to my cap. They help me save the day. That happens more than you’d think.   “Let’s go, Marco! Sol-Ray Man is coming today!” I say.   “I know. Look what I made.” Marco shows me his arms. He has special bands on his wrists. Each band has three shiny panels.   “Wow!” I say.   “XL7 Ray Benders,” Marco says. “Sol-Ray Man uses them. They direct his beams.”   “They zap around corners. Zap over buildings,” I say. “Zap past his archenemy Eclipse. So he can’t block Sol- Ray Man’s light,” I say. “Let me see them work.”   Marco doesn’t take them off. He moves his arm. Light zaps off the panels.   “Can I wear them?” I ask. “I need to show Sol-Ray Man I’m a superhero, too. I don’t want him to think I’m just a kid.”   “But, Clint McCool, you are a kid,” Marco says.   I sigh. I know. Real life is so boring. Except when we can have an escapade. Or when my friend makes cool stuff that he should share. “Please, Marco?”   “You have your cap,” Marco says. “I can’t wear my cap in school.”   Our teacher, Ms. Apple, always locks it in her desk. That’s a mistake. I need the cap. It helps me focus. Then I can control my powers. Ms. Apple doesn’t understand that. She’s a grown-up.   “I probably can’t wear these, either,” Marco says.   Marco’s right. School means rules. “Too bad we can’t zap around the rules.”   Then . . . Zing, zong, zing. Brain flash! “I don’t need my cap. I don’t need all my powers—just one. And one button.”   Hmmm. Which one should I choose? Invisibility? Idea Generator? Speed Accelerator? That’s the one. Then I can race Sol-Ray Man around the auditorium.   I tug at the Speed Accelerator button. “Help me get it off.”   Marco twists.   I yank. “Why did you tie it so tight?” I say.   “So you wouldn’t lose it,” Marco says.   “What are you guys doing?” M.L. comes over to us. She’s our best friend, too. She can walk on her hands. For real. She doesn’t even have to cheat.   “Tug of war? I can beat you both,” M.L. says.   She could do it, too. She’s superstrong.   “Maybe later,” I say. “I need this Speed Accelerator button.”   M.L. grabs the button. Marco and I hold the cap. She pulls.   Pop! The string breaks. The button comes off. It flies through the air.   “Catch it!” Marco says.   I push the Jump button on my cap. I boing really high. But not high enough.   The Speed Accelerator button lands in the gutter. It rolls down through the grate. Disaster!

I read this book in one night. You would have thought I was reading a NYT #1 rated thriller or similar. I too found effective treatments not only for myself but for friends. Sorry to the author but I can't let my friends sit and suffer.I want to add a personal experience- I studied qigong and tai chi. during qigong i fractured my right foot. The good old V.A. (yup- the Veterans Administration) tried for two months to prescribe pain pills to reduce the swelling painful foot. Finally I told my master about my foot. He sold me a small bottle of dit da jow juice which as he said is NOT FDA approved. He instructed me to apply it to my foot with cotton balls and tape them in place for a few HOURS?? Better than that! I wiped the cotton balls across my foot and the swelling and pain were gone in...TWENTY MINUTES. I was able to gingerly put both my shoes on after hobbling across campus in 2 foot snow drifts for two months.Thats my testimony. This book is worth what you pay for it. Keep it handy. You might want to make a copy for when you wear out the pages.

The good: 1) some really useful information 2) simply written explanation of hot warm cool cold principals of food and who is suited best by which temperatures. He even has a chart. The bad: 1) There are a few chapters broken down according to whether the item is an herb, vegetable, fruit, grain, etc. There doesn't appear to be any logical or alphabetical order of the items within each chapter. 2) For each item listed, there is a food property description for what it remedies (for instance, asthma). Under the initial list of remedies the author proceeds to list basic recipes of combined ingredients for specific ailments. These may or may not be listed under the original heading. 3) If you look up an ailment in the index, you might find 3 entries referencing the ailment, when in fact there are probably 10 or so. They're just tucked away in one of the recipes. 4) Sometimes, he'll list a recipe, without indicating its use 5) no botanical names are given so you can't be sure if the yam he mentions is actually a yam or yucca. 6) he'll reference a clinical trial without specifics (quantity of solution and how it was taken, for how long, what improvement was seen, etc.) I really wanted to like this book, and I still try to refer to it as he has some really good remedies in here. However, I really can't recommend a book where I have to write in entries into the index so that I can find some miraculous solution a week from now. His other book, "Chinese Herbs With Common Foods: Recipes for Health and Healing" received a better review, but only one person has reviewed it so far.

Third time I have this book purchase, I try avoid boxed precook food items and water added salty stuff with additives I need a dictionary to find out its meaning to. This book tells you what you eating and it benefits you

Eggers has generally disappointed me as of late. With some exceptions, I haven't truly enjoyed one of his books since YSKOV, which was ages ago. But, like a good loyalist, I've always gone out to buy his latest novel upon release.The Parade is more of a novella than a novel.I wanted to give this five, but there were parts near the beginning that I found really slow and boring. Having said that, when I got to about halfway through it really started to pick up and like JJ Abrams' approach to just about everything, Eggers kept leaving dangling threads that made me want to read more and more.I usually read a chapter or two before bed, but this weekend I powered through the last half of the book because I had to know how it was going to end.Man, the ending is really something. The sort that makes you utter a long drawn out expletive.

I'll say one thing for it, like the road, it moves along at a blistering pace. So it's quick read kind of like a comic book and that's about the quality of the imagination that wrote it. The road goes nowhere except back to the barbarism, etc. it was supposed to celebrate, another book for the junk heap.

I am a pretty big fan of Eggers, but I feel like this would have been much better served as a short story. Virtually zero happens until the last page when Eggers hits you with his view on "progress."

The premise is simple enough: a pair of western contractors have been sent to an unnamed country that has been ravaged by years of civil war. In this time of peace, they have been contracted to pave a road bridging the northern and southern regions of this country. The story is narrated by Four, the older and more experienced of the two men. Four intends to carry out this job has he has every assignment before, but Nine throws a wrench in that. As Four keeps his head down and his gaze fixed on the finish line, Nine soaks up the landscape and the hospitality of locals.The Parade chugs along at a steady pace. I wouldn't characterize this as particularly suspenseful, but the book doesn't drag on. Eggers leads you on with the promise of further intrigue and maybe, just maybe figuring out what this book is actually about. It feels almost allegorical with the way he layers on the vagueness: an unnamed company sending two men who go only by pseudonyms to an unnamed country after a conflict between nameless factions. It felt at times as if I knew the machine they were using to pave the road better than the characters before me. I enjoyed how both Four and Nine's relationship evolved over time, but the ending ultimately fell flat. The final twist was tragically predictable and didn't land with much more than a thud. For better or for worse, I've never read anything quite like The Parade before.I received my copy of The Parade from Knopf via First to Read in exchange for an honest review.

This is the first Hellboy comic that I've read. Previously, my only direct experience of the character was the two movies produced by Guillermo del Toro and starring Ron Pearlman, which I enjoyed quite a bit. I finally decided to read the Hellboy comic books when I saw this series on Amazon. It seemed like I good way to introduce myself to the real Hellboy.I'm very glad that I did! Mike Mignola's character and his artwork are splendid. The stories are like a combination of film noire and gothic horror/romance fused with the pulp stories of Lovecraft and Howard and Poe's sense of the macabre. I found the stories carried me along with the breathtaking speed of a rollercoaster.His artwork is justly famous. The way he uses light, darkness is very striking. It gives his larger panels tremendous dramatic impact. His shadowing often produces a deep and brooding atmosphere. It doesn't become oppressive though. He balances the darkness with a wry sense of humor. Hellboy's running internal commentary makes for a lot of that. That commentary also turns a character who is a demon from another dimension into a surprisingly warm and sympathic human being. It's very easy to identify with Hellboy. He is a remarkably loveable kind of superhero.Having read some of the real Hellboy, I find myself liking the Hellboy movies even more. Ron Pearlman and Guillermo del Toro have captured the spirit of Mignola's characters and stories wonderfully. Pearlman's highly sympathetic portrayal of Hellboy's emotional vulnerability is heartwarming and true to Mignola's vision of the character.

If you've only seen the movies, don't expect this book to be the action filled joy ride you are used to. This hellboy is very dark, brooding and contemplative and the monsters he faces are much more intelligent and cunning. If you are even bothering looking at this page, you'll enjoy this book though, don't be disappointed by the differences between the movies and this, embrace them and indulge in hellboys adventures. You will not be disappointed.

The book is amazing but I bought it brand new and it has finger prints on it and tears. Fifty bucks is a lot for a new book to have these damages. The damages on the new book is my only disappointment.

This includes the story on which the first Hellboy movie is based on along with two short stories and a gallery of arr.To me Hellboy is a superhero with a strong influence. I love the way the creator of this series draws his characters. He definitely up there with Jack Kirby,Bernie Wrightson snd Mike Ploog.

Beautiful edition of some of my favorite comics. This is honestly the best value I've ever seen for a volume of this caliber. You may not be able to tell it from the pictures, but this thing is HUGE. Everything is high quality and of course, the art and writing are top notch. A must have for Hellboy fans.

This is my first time I read a non marvel / dc comic. First off I liked it, however I wanted more. Perhaps the rest of the Hellboy series will continue to fill in the pieces the movie included. There were several aspects about the book that the movie changed which I didn’t mind. Great read, I can’t wait to read the next volume.

The list price is 50 bucks, got it with prime for 24. This is totally worth it. I was amazed at the quality of the binding, the paper grade and gloss. Gonna go ahead and purchase the rest of this novel edition because it may be the best thing I've ever purchased for the money on Amazon, seriously.

Hellboy fully deserves its reputation as an exceptionally rich, literary set of graphic novels. In my view, Hellboy ranks just below Neil Gaiman's The Sandman in its sweeping mythology and mysterious depths. And this large, plush library edition is an excellent (albeit expensive) way of getting into the series from the beginning. I also enjoyed some of the extra matter, particularly Alan Moore's preface to "Wake the Devil," which conveys his sense of Hellboy's place in the comic pantheon.The one flaw is that, inexplicably, "The Chained Coffin" (a short story) is left until Volume 2, despite taking place between the two chapters in Volume 1. But this omission can be forgiven, as the story doesn't bear on the main plot. For those who insist on reading the comics in their proper order but don't have the second volume handy, "The Chained Coffin" can also be viewed (in faithful animated form) on the Dark Horse website.

This book I bought a few years ago but only started reading 4 months ago and just finished. I must say that it was not a light read and it requires certain mathematical maturity beyond undergraduate courses. The first part deals with Cantor and Zermelo set theories and axioms. It is very dry sometimes and chapters are long which was not good for me because I was only reading 10 - 12 pages per week while commuting. In many places the author assumes that a reader already knows a lot about logic and set theory, for example, at the end, he devotes a page or two about Putman modal logic and uses freely its quantifiers without explaining them. Some glossary at the end would have greatly benefited this book. What I found clarifying is the fact that there are two foundations of set theory: the notions of logical and combinatorial collections. For the latter the Axiom of Choice is self-evident and is no longer controversial. The second part starting from chapter VI is more philosophical and concerns with epistemology and ontology of the infinite. At least at the beginning it clarifies the difference between potential and actual infinity. In the middle we see the use of schemas to avoid quantifiers. At the end of the book the author discusses the theory of indefinite large and small, its extrapolations to infinite and provides examples from mathematical analysis. The main theme of the book, as I understand it, is that our intuition about infinity arises from intuitive understanding of indefinitely large sets, their hierarchies and extrapolations.Thanks,Dmitry VostokovFounder of Literate Scientist Blog

I have taken a lot of math, up to the advanced undergrad level, but not much on this development of set theory, though I have come across it quite a bit in my reading. I found the book quite approachable, though I don't claim to be a great judge of the author's approach to a difficult subject and how it compares to other material on the subject. I was just happy to (sort of) get it.I confess that the whole notion of the infinite fascinates me.

This book helps to lay that foundation. A must read for anyone trying to bridge QM/GR. HS/College math required to grasp hard concepts but a good read for lay people.

The 20th century saw more advances in knowledge than could filter down to general society. Relativity and Quantum Theory are part of the vernacular, even if the popular conceptions are not necessarily good generalizations of their counterparts in science. The corresponding advances in philosophy, however, have stayed more in the province of academia, largely because philosophy itself has become highly technical; but the physics of beyond-everyday-experience have demanded these advances, primarily in epistemology, because the fundamental questions of science today are of meaning and understanding.Understanding the Infinite is a work of epistemology. Its contribution to the foundations of general knowledge demand that it disseminate beyond academia, although the ground Lavine breaks requires the extensive citations and technical style he employs. The author poses and addresses the following question. If set theory is so intuitively self-evident and seemingly such a fundamental underpinning of all mathematics, why is it so hard to express technically and why has the axiomatization of set theory been so controversial? Set theory was the big idea which the mid-20th century educational establishment thought important enough to indoctrinate schoolchildren with in the guise of new math. Yet set theory never took root in popular consciousness, certainly not the notion of transfiniteness.Lavine starts out by dispelling the anecdotal account of the development of set theory, which has misled even professional mathematicians and philosophers to conclude "The fundamental axioms of mathematics...are to a large extent arbitrary and historically determined." He constructs what he claims is the correct historical development of set theory (I'll let historians of mathematics decide this) including sidetracks into Russell's failed program to equate mathematics and logic (and in the process dispels the significance of Russell's paradox), and von Neumann's axiomatization of set theory emphasizing functions. The outcome of his exposition is the Zermelo-Fraenkel axiomatization with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC), today's common form of set theory. These chapters by themselves could serve as an introduction to set theory, except that the Continuum Hypothesis is barely mentioned, since it plays no role in Lavine's program. Admittedly, he has nothing new to add.The main event is Lavine's epistemological tour-de-force. Building upon work of Jan Mycielski he introduces the reader to the concept of finitary mathematics and constructs a finitary ZFC, showing that this theory justifies the adoption of what he calls the "Axiom of Zillions" (indefinitely large sets) in which we have access to very large sets' ordinal, but not necessarily its predecessors. The final step is to show this all "intuitively" extrapolates to ZFC.QEF, QED.I introduced physics in the opening paragraph of this review because I see Lavine's rigorous treatise in the epistemology of mathematics as a contribution to the grand unification of physics, mathematics, and epistemology. Lavine treads lightly in the physical realm. He writes "...modern physics makes it seem likely that the physical universe is of finite extent..." All of the dominant cosmologies put forth in the 20th century incorporated this misdirection set off by general relativity. On a large scale the universe must be curved. Ironically Lavine published in 1994, just as new astronomical observations began whispering "in three dimensions the universe is Euclidean". If that whisper becomes a shout in the 21st century, as appears likely from the mounting evidence, physics will have to address the transfinite.The Calculus had to be put on a firm theoretical foundation so that it could be used as a tool to advance knowledge without justifying its use. We may see that Lavine's epistemology will do the same for set theory and transfinite numbers.
