This is a large fold-up paper map for the large region around Chicago including all the suburbs and smaller towns surrounding Chicago. It is about 2 feet by 4 feet unfolded. It uses the standard-weight map paper. I wish Rand McNally would make their city maps a little thicker or out of a more tear-resistant material like they use for some hiking maps.( I have to keep a roll of thick Scotch tape in the car since I always wind up eventually getting little tears in these paper maps.)The land area shown on the map is the following:-From the Indiana state line on the east to the borders of Boone, DeKalb, and LaSalle counties on the west (about 45 miles west of Chicago)-North to the Wisconsin state line and south to just north of Kankakee, Illinois (about 55 miles south of Chicago).It shows all the highways and main roads, and major streets. It does not show the secondary roads or secondary city streets because that would make the map too hard to read.On the back is an index and locator of the main roads and streets on the map. There are also smaller more detailed maps on the back of downtown Chicago; Gary, Indiana; and the O'Hare Airport area (but no Midway Airport detail map).It is a good companion to the Rand McNally or AAA Chicago Street maps and others available on Amazon. For the Chicago area suburban towns and smaller surrounding town maps, you can check the town government web sites. In the area they may be for sale at the town halls, town libraries, Chambers of Commerce (in person or by mail), local gas stations, or local Wal-Marts. Motels usually also have the local town maps available for guests.

Rand McNally always does a good job with its well-made maps, and this one lives up to its claim.
I guess it serves is purpose but not easy to work with and a pain in the butt to pull out altogether.
