Review
"Edwards's book is a well-paced and readable account." --The Journal of America's Literary Past"This exhaustive account of the life and professional career of one of the most prolific naval aviators of World War II proved both enjoyable and humbling. As our 'Greatest Generation' becomes increasingly scarce, author Ted Edwards, a historian who specializes in oral histories, presents the invaluable perspectives of the men who helped fight and win the Pacific war." --Proceedings Magazine"This is a good read - it is an important reminder of the need to keep ... men joining our navies in peacetime, and retaining them so they can 'think, fight, lead and win at war'.... A good read - worth adding to the summer list." --The NAVY Magazine"Seven at Santa Cruz provides an intimate look at a man who played a small yet critical role in the Pacific War." --The Daily News"A great biography that is well told." --Air Power History"Vejtasa was the right man in the right place at the right time. He grasped his opportunities and utilised his particular talents to achieve great things piloting both bombers and fighters. That story is very well told here." --Baird Maritime"Seven at Santa Cruz is an exciting tale told well. While some readers may question whether Vejtasa alone saved 'Enterprise' and, by extension, Guadalcanal through his magnificent defence of the ship his record is exceptional and valorous. We owe a great debt to him and his comrades." --The Australian Naval Institute"Vejtasa was the right man in the right place at the right time. He grasped his opportunities and utilised his particular talents to achieve great things piloting both bombers and fighters. That story is very well told here." --Workboat World"Anyone interested in learning about the pragmatic and sometimes abrasive fight pilot ace Stanley 'Swede' Vejtasa, or about World War II naval aviation, would be well rewarded for the time spent reading this thoroughly researched and well written book." --Naval Historical Foundation"The author has produced an absorbing biography of WWII naval hero Stanley 'Swede' Vejtasa. 'Swede' flew the SBD Dauntless dive-bomber and the F4F Wildcat fighter during the start of the Pacific War - Most Highly Recommended." --FIRE Reviews

Stanley Vejtasa - christened 'Swede' by his Squadron CO - was one of the U.S. Navy's earliest fighter aces and a true national hero. In the Battle of Santa Cruz, Vejtasa downed multiple Japanese torpedo bombers intent on sinking American carriers, an act that had far-reaching consequences. Vejtasa stayed in the Navy after the war and had a rich career. The life and times of this unique individual are well-chronicled in Ted Edwards' SEVEN AT SANTA CRUZ.Coming from a hardscrabble existence in eastern Montana, Vejtasa joined the Navy in 1937 and eventually wound up flying Douglas Dauntless dive-bombers. During the Battle of the Coral Sea he helped sink the carrier Shoho and helped defend the carrier Yorktown from Japanese attackers, winning two Navy Crosses! Switched to fighters, he ended up in Jimmy Flatley's VF-10 where he claimed seven Japanese bombers while defending the carrier Enterprise at Santa Cruz. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor but that was downgraded for reasons made clear in the book. He retired from the Navy in 1970 at the end of an outstanding military career.Based on multiple interviews with Vejtasa, Ted Edwards' book does a fine job of relating the famed Navy ace's life story. Biographies of WWII Navy aces are few and far-in-between so SEVEN AT SANTA CRUZ is a welcome addition to the literature. It's a great story and well-told. Recommended.
My friend's wife is the relative of the author of this book. So it is nice to have a connection to the story. I would recommend it as a must read to all WW2 readers.
