Every year I end up paying up to $100 for a boring catalog cake from the supermarket for my kids’ birthdays. Something more exciting from a real bakery costs even more. Ridiculous.So I decided to look into doing something myself. I suck at baking (or so I thought), and so I needed recipes that were easy, and yet yielded impressive results.This beautiful book has exceeded my expectations in every possible way. The first gravity cake (pouring candy) I made came out absolutely perfectly, it looked just like it did in the pictures. My kid was so excited, and the other Moms couldn’t believe that I made it myself. I am already planning on making the Thanksgiving one to take to my family this year.- The book itself is really nicely made – it’s a fun book to have in the kitchen. The pictures and design are awesome.- The directions are so easy to follow, if you just take your time, anyone can make the cakes.- The results are incredible – every cake I’ve ever tried to make before turned out to be a giant blob covered in icing. These cakes are in many cases easier than a normal square cake because you are sticking things like candy onto the cake and so it looks more impressive and it’s pretty much impossible to mess it up.- Finally, the cakes taste as good as they look!I really cannot recommend this book highly enough. If a terrible baker like me can get amazing results, you can too. Give it a try!

Very disappointing. Almost amateurish!

I think that these cakes are, first of all, ADORABLE! They're fun, they're sweet, and most importantly of all the actual CAKE portion of the project sounds really yummy! I hate watching those competitive baking shows where to make the cake look the part, they sacrifice taste and yumminess. Not this book!And you don't have to be Buddy of Cake Boss to do a lot of these. If you have skewer rods or straws or really simple tools you don't have to go to Loews for, you can make a lot of these. They're very clever and super cute. Who would have thought to put cornflakes on a cake (it was a "bowl of cereal" cake).Super cute! Buy it for the pictures alone, and if you're baking inclined definitely get it for the recipes and fun projects!

Authors Friedman and Librae have pulled out all the stops to create 45 different ways the home baker can create celebration cakes in themes that seem to defy gravity. Each of their cake creations feature detailed step-by-step instructions and plenty of gorgeous color photography shows something amazing cascading from atop the cake. Themes range from a water can showering icing roses with water, to candy waterfalls, a bucket of popcorn being filled and a Lego toy box. The authors reveal the one secret ingredient that makes these cake so successful when added to your time and patient artestry. If the reader's goal is to wow family members and friends with cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and other important celebrations that are memorable and out-of-the-ordinary, then Gravity Cakes! is the perfect instruction manual. You will never settle for boring devil's food or buttercream frosted layer cake again!

Personally, this book has been a godsend!!!! I am, and have always been, a very bad cook (that is putting it nicely). Despite my best efforts and desire to cook, all of my creations seem to just come out as rubbish. Over the years I have bought countless cook books, have watched the food network hours on end, all to no avail. One day while I was shopping at Barnes and Nobels in the cooking section for yet another book that could maybe help me, I happened to come across this book: let me say that moment of happenstance ended up being a gamechanger!These two amazing authors created a book that completely changed my whole mindset about cooking. The best part is that they were able to do so with a cook about cakes! I mean who doesn't love cakes!!!! What I mean by calling this book by savior (in the kitchen), is that it helped me realized that I can make creations in my kitchen that look like they would come from 5 star restaurants. I made one of the gravity cakes for a friends birthday, and the cake ended up being the star of the evening. Everyone wanted to know where I bought the cake from, how much it cost, and what other kinds of amazing gravity cakes the baker could make for potential future events. I was thrilled to be able to shock all of my friends, all of whom know that I am a bad cook, that the cake had not come from a bakery at all. I baked it myself! Of course, my friends knew of my shortcomings in the kitchen so naturally they were skeptical. Fortunately, I had documented myself throughout the baking process so I was able to provide definitive prove that I had indeed baked it myself. Naturally the next question was how. At that point I had received enough credit and praise, and decided it was time to give credit where credit was due. I looked the book up on Amazon and explained to everyone my amazing find, and how easy this book had made creating my master piece. Within the next month all of my friends had bought the book, and every special occasion or gather now always includes at least one gravity cake!While being able to create these wonderful cakes in and of itself is an amazing feat, and something I will be forever grateful to these authors for their ingenuity and imagination that they shared with the world. My appreciate actually goes beyond baking and gravity cakes. After I reading the book, and successfully making my first few gravity cakes, I decided to take that same mindset and advice that this book provides to all other aspects of cooking. Applying what I learned from this book to any of my cooking currently has me making amazing dishes out of any food endeavor that I undertake. This book gave me the confidence and the no how to accomplish amazing cooking, that previously I had thought was something outside of my skill set. These authors accomplished what countless cook books and hour and hours of the food network were unable to do: they taught me how to believe in myself and they taught me how to bake, cook, basically anything and everything in the kitchen!So long story short...yes I give this book 5 stars. Highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone as a must have in your kitchen cooking/baking arsenal. My only regret is the delay in writing this review because the world and the authors deserve to know how grateful I am for this book, and the potential impact it can have on everyone's lives.

I enjoyed the book every much. Im a muslim so I already know the stories but wanted to read from a mainstream writer after watching him on CNN. The book served its purpose, Chopra wrote "I didnt write this book to make Muhammed more holy. I wrote it to show that holiness was just as confusing, terrifying, and exalting in the 7th century as it would be today" (location 120 in the book). Chopra accomplished this in the book, he showed all the confusing calamities and crazy wars that happened in the time of Muhammed peace be upon him, yet He had to take difficult actions for survival and not going against what he preached and believed in. He truly believed that God has reached out to him, even though it sounded crazy to him for the longest time. People believed him more than he believed himself. In the book preached things like "Do you want to show how much you love your Creator", the villager replied "with all my heart", Muhammed responded "then love your fellow behings first" (location 2305). There were skeptics in Muhammed's days, where they thought he was crazy, But after being around Muhammed, Muhammed told one non believer friend "I would lose any battle to win a heart of a great soul". These are teachings of islam, compassion and believing in god, yet Islam gets a bad reputation in present day today. I highly recommend this book because its an easy read. Chapter 18 Yasmin the Women at the Well made me cry so much, i was boohoo-ing as I was reading, it was very touching.

4.5 stars: I had braced myself to slog through Deepak Chopra's biographical novel "Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet." Instead, I was delightfully surprised by the compelling story of Muhammad's journey from affluent trader to reluctant prophet, and the engagingly lyrical music of the suras (verses) he channeled from Allah.Story: Although ostensibly a novel, Chopra bookends his story about the Muslim prophet with an author's note and an afterword, offering the reader a history lesson while reflecting on the current relationship between Islam and the rest of the world. The novel emphasizes that of all the founders of the great world religions, Muhammad is the most like us. Muhammad, a merchant who marries a rich widow and routinely travels in caravans as part of his trade, lives a regular life until the day the archangel Gabriel appears and orders the reluctant 40-year-old Muhammad to recite. (To recite, Chopra reminds, is the root word of Koran.) Using multiple first-person narrators--slaves and merchants, hermits, and scribes--he portrays life (including its brutality) on the streets of Mecca. Each chapter is self-contained. Muhammad's wife, Khadijah, laments there have been no warnings that this tumultuous, life-changing event is about to occur; Ali, the first convert, explains how the Prophet approached him. Compellingly told, this is not only good storytelling; it also helps readers, especially non-Muslims, better understand the complexities and contradictions surrounding Islam. (From Booklist)Spiritual/metaphysical content: Medium. The book focused more on the man than his teachings, which I found to be less than satisfying. I had hoped to gain more insight into the teachings of Islam, although Chopra does describe the five pillars and six core beliefs of Islam, along with some of his other teachings. However, other aspects of the work delighted me. I expected to learn much about Islam, but what I didn't expect was the love of poetry that suffused Arab hearts and the attendant lyricism of Muhammad's suras. I enjoyed the poetry of each sura as much as the message. Do you not see how he has lengthened the shadows? the One is He who made the night a garment for you. He gave you sleep so that you may rest And the morning sky to be a resurrection.And Lo, I swear by the afterglow of sunset, And by the night and all it enshrouds. And by the moon when she is at the full, You will journey to higher and higher worlds.Another unexpected delight was the wealth of Arabic sayings that were both pithy and poetic: "Fate ... was like a wasp covered in honey. You cannot taste the sweetness without a sting."My take: In addition to being a simple and easy introduction to the life and teachings of Muhammad and Islam, "Muhammad" proves to be entertaining, historically accurate, and relevant to our times. Chopra's stilted writing style made several of his non-historical novels less than enjoyable to me in the past. However, his short and direct prose works well in the context of this fictionalized biography. By writing each chapter from a different character's perspective, including Muhammad's enemies, Chopra offers fascinating perspective and varies what might otherwise be a monotonal story. The actual events of the Prophet's life provide a thrilling framework fraught with conflict that propels the story forward.I learned a great deal about Muhammad's life and the rise of Islam. Although much blood was spilled in the evolution of Islam, violence was integral to Arabic life at that time. Muhammad struggled to project his message of peace, acceptance, and submission above the sometimes horrific reality of Arabic life in the 7th century. Chopra's author's note, afterward, timeline, and family tree helped clarify the complex history of the times and placed his life in a clearly defined context.One of the most fascinating aspects of the story was the realization that Muhammad was a man like any other, not a son of God (such as Jesus) nor a transcendent human (such as Buddha). The angel Gabriel chose him as a medium to deliver Allah's message, and the reader clearly sees how Muhammad was forced into the role of reluctant prophet but also military commander, master politician, and sometimes brutal judge in order to ensure the survival of Allah's message. As Chopra notes, "I didn't write this book to make Muhammad more holy. I wrote it to show that holiness was just as confusing, terrifying, and exalting in the 7th century as it would be today."

I cannot decide which book Buddha, or Muhammad i admire more. They both take a deep and sometimes confusing subject and make it accessible to someone like me. I took issue with Mr. Chopra's Jesus because it felt stilted but that is not the case here. I would like to state clearly that I am not any kind of scholar of anything, just a voracious reader who thought this series would be interest in. Not was that an understatement. I have found amazing insights and understandings that I hadn't even previously conceived. Thank you for these books, now on to God.

In Warner's Muhammad and the Unbelievers, Muhammad's story is put together with Sira and Hadith filling in gaps in the Koran. There, you get it plainly, without the modern polish an avoidance of negatives.

Prior to reading this book I little real understanding of Islam and it origins - or Arabic culture for that matter. This book was a wonderful gateway to the opening of that door. Even though it is a novel, I know that Deepak thoroughly reasearches his work, and in doing so he has created a beautiful and I'm sure reasonably accurate rendering of 4th/5th century Mecca, and the culture of the Arab peoples of that time. Reading this work gave me a great appreciation of the history of the Middle Eastern people and the Islmaic faith, and some insights as to how and why it has evolved the way it has. I know Deepak well enough to know that he believes that developing an understanding of world cultures, especially those who many people fear - is an essential step in bringing people together and ending world conflict - and I think this book is a powerful step in that direction.

Deepak Chopra has written a wonderful book about a very controversial man. Muhammad was controversial in the 8th Century and his teachings are controversial now. If you read this and understand that this was a man who tried to make his world kinder and gentler, you get a picture, now distorted, of a world that the Buddha and Jesus of Nazareth would have appreciated. Unfortunately, the religions of the Middle East have been torn asunder and Muhammad's teachings are barely recognized in the current climate of endless, cruel wars.

If you have questions as a practitioner of systems architecting about your overall architecting approach then I would highly recommend this text. I would also recommend this as a reference book for a systems architecting class at the advanced graduate level. It does provide a balanced view of the discipline for journeymen. The view is presented in multiple dimensions such as builder-architected, manufacturing systems, systems science, and social systems domains. The chapter on models and modeling is very useful to the beginning architect but is somewhat high level. The architecture frameworks chapter is outdated and is shallow. The integrated modeling methodologies (Hatley-Pirbhai, Q2FD) discussion is very brief, but has references for further reading. The section on the systems architecting profession causes the reader to think deeply about the profession.If you are looking for a system architecting self-help cookbook, this isn't it. Although the appendix lists architecting heuristics, I doubt that those 12 pages alone would be worth the cost. The book will disappoint software-only system architects since much of it is clearly focused on software/hardware co-development and manufacturing systems development.System architecting is still in its infancy, and this book provides a critical element to that profession's maturation. It identifies some of the domain's critical attributes, but fully understanding this text requires some system architecting background to apply what is being presented.

Book has highlights throughout

I'm happy with this book so far. It makes systems architecting very understandable and the chapters are pretty easy to read. The heuristics are good to know (there's a whole appendix of heuristics). The case studies that introduce chapters are informative and provide good examples.

I waited for a chance to use this book before writing a review. For the past two years, I use it only when I need words to describe to the lay person "What" System Architecting is. But for practical system architecting technique, this book won't get it for you.

This book provides multiple perspectives to better understand how to take an 'out of the box' perspective when approaching systems architecting. You'll get out of it what you put into it. Enjoy.

This is a delightful little book, particularly so if you want to have your prejudices confirmed. Those prejudices would include the following: 1) Theory should never become detached from practice; 2) Elites who think they know what is best for the common folk are never to be trusted; 3) Europe is different from America and we should neither be intimidated by their culture nor excessively defensive concerning our own; 4) Ugliness--regardless of the political ideology supporting it--is still ugly; 5) Common sense and common aspiration trump hothouse academic posturing; 6) Architecture is space for human life, not an opportunity to make an abstract statement; 7) (my personal prejudice) Art deco (on the large scale) and prairie-style (domestically) so far exceed modernist or postmodernist architecture that one must wonder why they were ever abandoned.Tom Wolfe's purpose here is to demonstrate that establishment architecture (which happened to also be left-leaning, ideological, elitist architecture) is flat-out ugly. While he shows the linear progression of influences that led to the international style and sustained it, he never fully answers the question of why so many tolerated this nonsense for so long.I have had some personal dealings with one of the individuals in TW's rogues' gallery and I found him to be arrogant, pretentious, highhanded and not terribly imaginative. How do such individuals prosper? TW's answer, in part, is that they draw their actual living from university appointments rather than from real world construction projects, but he also argues that, in general, the consumer simply defers to such a person's judgment rather than following his own lights. Thus, one of the key lessons of the book is to trust yourself and your own inclinations and perceive the nudity of the elite culture's current emperors--a healthy antidote to many persisting cultural diseases.

I studied Architecture in the early 60's when the theories described here were in "full bloom". It has taken us a long time to get past stoicism in architecture. As always Tom Wolfe's is funny and entertaining when he delivers his observations on life. Thank you Tom!

This is a very disappointing book. It is largely a tirade against Modernism and architects and social-political movements. But it does not go anywhere in the end. You know what he does not like - and Tom did not like a lot of things - but not what he likes or what he thinks we should like.Yes there was a lot of bad Modernist architecture. But there has always been a lot of bad architecture of all types since the time that humans first built buildings.And despite the title, Wolfe never really addresses the topic of "our house". You can't blame the post WW2 flood of ugly houses on Bauhaus. I live in Miami. People come to see our "Art Deco" and "Miami Modern" architecture which is much inspired by Bauhaus. Today there is a building boom in housing in Miami that is strongly inspired by Bauhaus design - simple, uncluttered, harmonious but with aspects that attract the eye. What a blessed change from McMansions.This is not a book about architecture. It is a book about Tom Wolfe.One aspect that really annoyed me about this book was that Wolfe really is annoyed to an obsessive degree by people with large egos. And yet the ego that really stands out in this book is Tom Wolfe's. It is significant that Wolfe always wore a white suit to make sure that you don't miss him standing there in the crowd - the white flag of ego, on legs.

Read this after “The Right Stuff” because I really liked that book and was looking for an architectural history book.For someone familiar with the subject matter in this book I can understand the low reviews, but this was a very entertaining way to learn about the progression of architecture in the twentieth century.I look forward to reading more nuanced descriptions of this history, but I also really enjoyed reading a version from someone who wasn’t afraid to call modern architecture stupid and ugly.Beyond architecture the book is an illuminating account of how academia can create utter garbage when it turns completely inward, rather than using intellect to pursue societal goals.

Very funny and informative. I am a cabinet maker and regularly have to watch clients suffer through the nonsense he describes here from architects and designers. I found it fascinating to find out the historical origins.

The book looked new. It arrived more quickly than I expected from a private vendor, in a well protected envelope. A good price, even with the extra shipping charges. And in interesting book if you're interested in how America went from Beau-Arts buildings (quoin block corners, arched windows, ornamentation and peaked roofs with overhangs to shed rain) to the flat-roof, shear façade, 'modern' (dull) buildings of today. I've seen it everywhere...A beautiful Romanesque Church with an extension that looks like it could be a municipal parking garage or a nail factory. Ugh!

Mr Tom Wolfe presents a short, acidic history of how a few people managed to get a lot of us to believe that those concrete and aluminum slabs were works of art. If you've ever harbored suspicions that the emperor had no clothes here's ammunition to say so.

I wish I would have read this years ago. Mr. Wolfe analysis is brilliant.I am an architect and during my career I figured out on my own that much of the professional was powered by BS. Reading this book years ago would have saved me some time and frustrations.
