Before getting into my review, I want to say that I am super glad I did NOT read Tim Challies' 1-star review of this title until after I'd finished reading "Moving Mountains" cover to cover. Had I seen that review first, I would have thought twice about purchasing this book. That would have been a BIG mistake! Reading what Challies wrote caused me to wonder if he and I actually read the same book. It also gave me pause to wonder what his axe to grind with Eldredge might be.I am no John Eldredge groupie. There was a time when I followed and supported his ministry. But that was quite awhile ago now. So, I was surprised when Amazon recommended his latest book to me. I'm glad they did. The author's gift of words -- his voice -- shines through every page brilliantly!Eldredge makes it clear prayer is not a quickie wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am two minute sort of thing. He uses the word "intentionality" to relate this idea. The book is excellently balanced with supporting Bible passages and resources for further study. I found I'd already read a number of the books by other authors he recommends.He uses the phrase "there is a way things work" as an overall theme to connect the dots. I enjoyed this little creation to reveal that I was about to partake in one of those deep mysteries he'd uncovered. I sometimes need someone waving a caution flag that says "slow down... don't rush through this part."Another thing I like is Eldredge's use of his own experiences in prayer. He describes them and then provides the prayer words he uses. I find that immensely helpful, akin to standing on his shoulders, rather than having to flounder away on my own. Prayers he's developed are printed in full at the end of the book. I get the feeling he really does want his readers to delve into this prayer adventure.One thing I wish he had developed further was the idea of provision. One of the resources John offers is Dr. Ed Murphy's "The Handbook For Spiritual Warfare." It's one of those I mentioned earlier that I've read. Appendix B in the back of that book is a prayer that I think might be one of the inspirations to Eldrede's "Daily Prayer." There are several parts to it emphasizing God's provision which are only slightly implied in "Moving Mountains." I'd prefer he plumb the amazing provision of God deeper.John Eldredge has sold millions of copies of his bestseller, "Wild At Heart." This book is on that level and I hope he sells millions of "Moving Mountains," too. My recommendation is that you read the entire book cover to cover first. That way you'll have the 30,000 foot view... the big picture. Then go back and take it slowly, applying..... no, PRAYING.... what John Eldredge has revealed.As I said in the headline, based on what I've gleaned from this book, if I had been told I was terminally ill, I'd want John Eldredge praying for me. "Moving Mountains: Praying with Passion" holds my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION!

I have read many of John Eldredge's book. They have challenged the way I see Christ, mostly for the better. I normally do not feel uncomfortable with his writing. I read all books with a Berean perspective. Some of the teachings within this book take steps into extra-biblical methodologies, or at best thinly connected scriptures, which I have a hard time connecting the relevance of. He skirts the edge of some teachings within charismatic circles, which he states and then almost contradicts himself so as to not to offend non-charismatics.On the positive side of things. John teaches that Jesus is not a distant God. He is an intimate and close friend that loves and cares for you. He encourages one to approach prayer in a conversational way. He clearly shows how God speaking directly to you is biblical and normative. He teaches you to pray expectantly, which all true believers have a right to do. I have grown deeper in my prayer life as a result of this book and his Beautiful Outlaw book.What I am finding difficult to reconcile scripturally: His Daily Prayer is formulaic and long-winded. This flies in the face of what Jesus taught in Matthew 6:7. Proverbs 10:19 might apply as well. It cannot be for God's benefit. His implication is that it is for you to center yourself. Maybe it is just me, but recitation of a long winded script doesn't focus me. It moves me away from Christ, not towards him. It also take a LONG time. If I was a theologian or in ministry, my day would allow time for the 15-20 minutes to go through the DAILY prayer. I just can't see where this is God honoring.This book takes you into the area of binding and loosing and to claiming authority. This is very controversial. There are very reputable theologians on both sides of this camp. Beware and research prayerfully on this. Satan likes you to either think he is not there or that he is behind every tree. Many who get into binding and loosing see him behind every tree. Jude 9 applies when dealing directly with Satan. If another archangel isn't going to tread into "binding" Satan, should we?Praying in tongues: I think John handles this very well. My personal experience in this area is that it doesn't occur through my will. There have been times when the Spirit has taken over me in prayer. Most times (and all times when I am publicly praying), it is in my everyday language. He just takes over my mouth. I have had a time or two when another language formed in my mouth. Never were they when I was praying before others. Of course the bible states that such times (praying in tongues before others) must have an interpretation. What John teaches in this respect does seem to be consistent with my experience, as if my opinion has any weight. But this is my chance to speak. Write your own review if you disagree. Again, this is an area of much controversy.In summary, I believe you need to read many of John's other books for this book to be helpful. No Christian author has it all correct. Test everything through scripture and in prayer. Also understand, just as John points out that Jesus never healed the same way each time, he also doesn't work with each person the same way. He's bigger than that. If you are looking for a formula on prayer, there isn't one.

This book is great and phenomenal. If your prayer life feels sort of dull read this book or get the audio book and listen to it. Ponder what he's saying. Go back into your Bible and look up the scripture references. Ask the HOLY SPIRIT of GOD who raised CHRIST JESUS from the dead to show you and teach you all things just as CHRIST promised he would and it will change your prayer life forever. It's not John's book that does that but it's a guide back into the TRUTH, the WAY and the LIFE who changes it.

It is not possible for me to reduce to words or overstate the significance of the message in "Moving Mountains." It has met me squarely in my brokenness, and forever altered my understanding of prayer.Like a superior sermon one experiences when you feel as if the pastor's teaching was directed specifically at you, nearly every chapter overflowed with what I need to learn and comprehend about prayer. And I have only now read it through once completely.Next move is to go back and begin even more serious study. This is a book, like the Bible from which most of it is adroitly woven, that will be dog eared, highlighted and referenced again and again. God had used John Eldridge mightily herein.

I am both reading and listening to this book and have done so several times, absorbing more each time. Shortly after I started reading this the first time, my husband entered the hospital for what ended up being almost a month and two surgeries. I literally searched through this book to find models of prayer for different situations and prayed through many of them....sometimes I was so tired or "brain scrambled" that I needed rhe words in front of me....God is indeed good and I praise God for John's obedience in writing this, (and the annointing that I see in his writing).

The Egyptian Museum is a show-stopping museum with limited object descriptions in English. I was considering hiring a guide for the museum, but then decided that I wanted to do it myself. This book has given me everything I need to guide our family through the Egyptian Museum. At the end of the book, there is a section to guide you through the museum (to see the highlights) if you only have a limited amount of time. With the floor plans, photos, and excellent descriptions, this book allows to you prepare and decide what is important to you instead of walking through the museum uninformed on your own or with a guide giving a generic tour.

Firstly, I want to say how stunned I was with the speed and efficiency that this order was delivered to South Africa. Top marks, to Amazon and the seller.I'm about to embark on a trip I've dreamed about all of this life (and probably previous lives as well), and really want to be properly prepared.I read that this is the definitive guide to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and, while I won't know until I've actually been, it certainly seems to be. There is so much information, with pictures (wonderful pictures), descriptions, suggestions of what is vital not to miss, floor plans, you name it. There's a section devoted to those of you who may not have too much time, but want to see as much as possible.It's little heavy to carry, but I'll cope - the size makes it easy to handle, and it makes a wonderful coffe table book for when I get home. I'll be able to show friends and family pictures of the wonderful items I've SEEN!The guide is not available for sale outside Egypt, and I was concerned that I might not be able to get one once there. Amazon to the rescue, and I should mention that the copy is in perfect condition.I would recommend this guide, without any hesitation.

This book is wonderful in detail and pictures. I went to the Egyptian Museumm in May of 2008 and wish I had it with me then. I recieved it in about a weeks time. I highly reccomend it.

This book is about 5x9 inches, 1.3 inches thick in stiff-cover paperback, and thanks to 600+ glossy pages in colour, very heavy! At that size, it's obviously not a coffe table book - it really is a guide to the museum. It's not cheap. I got a copy in a store in Giza (Lehnert and Landrock) for about $US70 (in 2012), so the $358 price here is seriously out of balance. Plus, they had plenty of copies so I'm not sure why the website here shows so little stock.Every page has at least one colour photo. The items in the book are arranged by room number in the museum, so it is a handy guide; there's a 40-page section at the back which shows small photos of each item with the corresponding room numbers.In that local bookstore in Cairo, I saw nothing else comparable to this; and the local guide also recommended it. The only problem with this - in tehse ddays of luggage weight limits, it's heavy; and if you use a guide book in a museum, you could spend as much time reading the book as you do looking at the exhibits. However, it is an excellent choice if you want to see the museum.If you can find one of these without breaking the bank, get it!

The Ilustrated Guide to the Egyptian Museum is one of the most wonderful Books I've Known. I visited the museum two times and it was imposible to get a copy of it. The Book gives an almost complete image of the magnificent collection of Ancient Egyptian Art in the Cairo Museum.

A classic, filled with wisdom and insights into the shifts in legal reasoning following the New Deal cases. The book itself is short and extremely dry - a slog to get through. Having said that, the book is a valuable read and a classic in the field.

I attempted to read this before paralegal, and after paralegal school while working in a legal capacity, and honestly, this is quite painful to read. When I first read it I didn't enjoy it. I thought it was because I was uneducated. This whole thing reads like dicta, but unapologetically douchey. Legal Reasoning from the Delaney Series is much better.

A small book concerning Edward Levi's theory on legal reasoning. The size is perfectly compact, but don't let that fool you. Levi's reasoning takes serious concentration to follow. By no means an "introduction" to the law, you should have a fairly good grasp on the workings of the court system before trying to finish this. The excellent new foreword to this edition by Schauer helps give needed context. Recommended for anyone heading to law school or interested in legal theory.

Excellent primer for understanding common-law judging. Unfortunately also an apologetic tract for tyrannical kritarchy. Worth reading.

It is a short book, but worth the price, and comprehensively packed with details about logical and legal reasoning. I can't imagine what you could do with it other than prepare for law school and/or law school exams/writing, but for that purposes, it reliably serves you well.If you're heading to law school next Fall, pick it up (but be prepared to feel a bit overwhelmed/exciting about how much there is to learn), and when you're IN law school, pick it up (and be prepared to understand a heck of a lot more than when you read it the first time)!

This book was not all bad. I enjoyed the info behind the law and how they were created. Other than that it was just OK.

Some of the material was slightly dated, and it was written with a legal style which can be difficult for the legal novice. Sort of a Catch-22. If you can read and clearly understand, you do not need what you just read.

Preliminary Information:Edward H. LeviAn Introduction to Legal ReasoningUniversity of Chico Press, London: 1949104pp.ISBN: 0-226-47408-9 paperIntroduction: Edward H. Levi explains in the preface that the purpose of his thesis is to provide an analysis developed at the trial level based on statutory and constitutional law. The trials and their analysis are ones, for the most part, which have reached the appellate level. He notes that Judge Frank appreciates the discretionary organization of fact at the trial level whereas Dean O'Meara appreciates benefits of the natural law approach. O'meara contends that for those trials that to do reach the appellate level, "a well established principle, expressive of the earlier decisions, is clearly dispositive of the controversy." Levi dedicates his thesis to providing examples which help provide an explanation to the process of legal reasoning. He focuses more on the process rather than one method over anotherDevelopment: Levi begins to explain the process of legal reasoning as it relates to case law and initially that it is a three step process; similarity is seen between cases, law inherent in the first case is announced, and then the rule of law is made applicable to the second case. This method works well for case law but that for other areas it may present many imperfections. It is the similarities or differences in each case that is determined by the judge. There will be cases where there is no precedent and therefore in these cases the legal process cannot simply be the "application of known rules to diverse facts." Reasoning by example in the law, as Levi writes, is key in part to that which the law process holds over the litigants. As the law is ever changing to meet the new challenges presented by a growing and highly technological society, reasoning by example or precedent illustrates the important role where the common ideas of a society can have in shaping the law. "What a court says is dictum, but what a legislature says is statute. Interpretation of intention when dealing with a statute the is way of describing the attempt to compare cases on the basis of the standard thought to be common at the time the legislation was passed." The courts interpret legislation through the appellate process and it is here, through this process, that the courts impact the ever changing law. In section two of Levi's thesis he gives examples of how judges interpreted the law based on precedent and also how each opinion led to changes in the next. The cases he sites begin with MacPherson v. Buick; the potential liability of a seller of an article which cause injury to a person who did not buy the article from the seller. Due to limited space I am going to attempt to be very brief describing these. This case was in 1816 and takes us to 1851; Langridge v. Levy. The plaintiff contended that the defendant had sold a defective gun for the use of himself and his sons. In this case the gun went off causing a lamp to explode which caused the actual injuries to the son. Five years later in Winterbottom v. Wright the court refused to permit a coachman to recover against the defendant who had provided a defective coach under contract with the Postmaster General. The coach had broken down and the plaintiff causing him to become lame. "He could not recover because to extend liability this far would lead to absurd and outrageous consequences. This is where I believe the author is getting close to "Proximate Cause and just how far liability should extend at the time of this writing in 1949." "It must be realized that the words of a statute are not dictum but rather legislative intent. The legislature may have had a particular case uppermost in mind, but it has spoken in general terms." In this sense the statutory interpretation tells how to operate and through the courts application of the appellate process the statute changes with the views of a society with the constraints of the Constitution. " On June 25th, 1910, the Mann Act provides in part: Any person who shall knowingly transport to or cause to be transported, or aid or assist in obtaining transportation for, or in transporting, in interstate or foreign commerce or in any territory or in the District of Columbia, any woman or girl for the purpose of prostitution or debauchery, or for any other immoral purpose, or with the intent and purpose to induce, entice, or compel such woman or girl to become a prostitute, or to give herself up to debauchery, or to engage in any other immoral practice... shall be deemed guilty of a felony. It is not within the scope of this review to attempt to paraphrase this work to the reader in this review, as interesting as it is. It is my belief that Levi follows the changes and history of The Mann Act in order to reinforce the belief that laws and statutes are ever changing in order to meet the needs of a changing society. Had this thesis been written in 2009, as opposed to 1949, I believe we would still enjoy this fundamental belief but with the added excitement and challenges which technology brings to the table.Conclusion: Levi has used examples of case law, statutory law, and constitutional interpretation to illustrate his point that the law is ever changing as technology and a society changes within the constraints of its constitution. Things that may have at one time been considered to be extremely dangerous items for sale may have become commonplace due to improved technologies and experience. I believe Levi's main point in this thesis is to illustrate the "process" of legal reasoning through the examples he has provided. Changes in technology, society, and communication all play their respective parts in the process of legal reasoning as Levi has presented them.

What a pleasure it is to read a book written by a world class theologian that is accessible to the lay reader who is not a professional in theology. I remember when Pope Benedict XVI was elected and I wondered what would be in store for the Church, and I wasn't hopeful. Was I ever wrong. I've come to recognize Benedict as a thoughtful, humble man who loves Christ and the Church and teaches from that center. That is what you will find in this book. At least I did.We read this book for our Catholic parish book club and I think the overwhelming opinion was surprise and pleasure at what we found here. What truth is released when the focus is Trinitarian and Christ-centered. When reading this book, I sensed that Benedict uses the biblical text to share the Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth. In that, he invites us to encounter Christ. It was a pleasure to experience the freedom that comes from centering on Christ and the Trinitarian God. The Truth truly does set you free (John 8:32).

This book contains many insights into Holy Scripture that I had neither heard or thought of. The clarity and simplicity in which this book undertakes its purpose is also deep, yet accessible. The deep understanding and experience of the author is evident from reading it. I suggest this book for any honest persons who are willing to learn and especially those who are wanting to have a deep enough view of true Christian faith presented for honest intellectual analysis. It would help to read Introduction to Christianity by the same author Pope Benedict the XVI. I heard that when he was elected to the Papacy, that many saw it as electing the most intelligent man in the room. I now believe that it is likely.

As a Jewish man, I was looking for an intelligent yet passionate declaration from a Christian, on the person of Jesus.I sensed Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict the XVI) would deliver.And the Pope does.The Pope elucidates his personal endeavor to find the 'essence' of a Man many believe encapsulates the fulfillment of divinity.A Man whose life perpetually inspires and illuminates many through the ages.This book presents a 'Gospel-dissection' of Jesus' words and actions.What He was thinking, and most of all, what drove 'God' to pour Himself into the restrictive, suffocating mortal bodyof a human being.I am not sure the Pope makes his case for Jesus' divinity.But to deny that the Jesus of the Gospels was not a spectacularly unique man would be todeny the heights to which a man can attain, when God is made the focus and locus of one's life.

Pope Benedict XVI (Cardinal Ratzinger) has an incredibly brilliant understanding of the nature of Jesus and the structure of Christianity. His discourse is unparalleled. But beware of assuming you can breeze through the book. Cardinal Ratzinger's philosophy is highly complex, and his diction is immensely difficult. So a clear understanding of the phenomenal truth of his description of Jesus takes some real careful thinking and meditation. I loved the book, but wow, IT WAS CHALLENGING.

This is the second book by Pope Benedict that I’ve read and, as I was reading it, and mentally comparing it to his book on the Doctors of the Church, it suddenly struck me that the difference between the two books is the difference between Benedict and his successor, Francis. Benedict is a master theologian and Francis is a pastor. His book on the Doctors was taken from homilies he’d given and came across as strong on history but weak on its attempts at inspiration. This book on Benedict’s views of Jesus as seen through the gospel is quite wonderful and masterful. It plays to his theological wheelhouse and Benedict hits a home run.This particular volume follows Jesus from his baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration. It is filled with historical information, views from his wide reading, and his own theological insight. There is some wonderful stuff here. His recounting of the baptism as a mirror of the Passion and crucifixion is something that I’d never considered before. I was intrigued by his discussion of Jacob Neuser’s book A Rabbi Talks with Jesus as a counterpoint to his look at the Sermon on the Mount. So much so that I’m now about halfway through Neuser’s book as well. He delivers an excellent explication of the Lord’s Prayer. He looks closely at three of Jesus’ parables and, in particular, gives us insight into the second brother, the “son who remained at home”, in his discussion of the Prodigal Son, which I found very valuable.Not that I found everything Benedict explained convincing. I found his chapter on the Gospel of John, while excellent in describing its symbols and themes, a bit hard to trust when he tries to convince us of an earlier composition date and a lower Christology that seems apparent in the text. And yet, he is very convincing when he describes why he thinks that the gospel (and the letters of John) comes from a tradition that has links to an actual apostle.In fact, this is an excellent book. Though it shows Benedict’s intellectual bent, it remains readable to any reasonable educated Christian. Whatever one feels about Benedict as a pope, this book is an engaging account of his thinking about Christ. As such, it is a valuable resource for anyone on their own search for truth. I’m looking forward to reading the second volume.

I just got back into golfing last year after a ten-year hiatus and this book was just perfect. It does a great job of breaking down a lot of the mystery and intrigue associated with the game, and made me much more comfortable on the course. I still have MUCH to learn--which is really one of the best aspect of the game, IMHO--but this was great about putting me on a good track. I think the best thing about this book was the realization that the game isn't all that different for women vice men, but that we all act like it is. Recognizing the problem is the first step (I think the second step is washing it out?)At any rate--I liked this one, and refer back to it frequently.

I'm a new golfer. I read this book once and started taking lessons. I find myself going back and re-reading parts of it over and over again as I try to perfect my putting and my full swing. It is helping my game greatly. My instructor is amazed how quickly I learn. I wouldn't have remembered everything my instructor told me if I hadn't gone back to reading the relevant parts from this book.

This book is in great condition and seems very informative. I doubt I will set the world on fire as a golfer, but it looks like it said it would.

It's easy to follow and simple to understand. This will be suitable for an individual who just starts to learn how to play golf. I tried the drills that the author provides in her book. It works well for me. However, it would be nice if the author provides more information on the diffrence of natural, strong or weak grip and the impact of each one when making contact with golf ball.

Good book although it feels a bit old, there's a lot of anti men's attitudes towards women golfers in the book and that was presumably the writer's experience. I have only just started being a learner golfer and haven't noticed any of that but I guess, give them time. Still, the techniques and protocol all fit in very well with what my brilliant woman coach is teaching me.
