Chronicles Volume I by Bob DylanIt should come as no surprise to those who have listened to Bob Dylan's music, watched his elusive appearances, and followed his unforthcoming interviews, that Dylan often doesn't help you to understand who he is. In what purports to be the first volume of his autobiography, Dylan lets you know who he is and how he got there, but don't expect a straightforward narrative explanation. Just as in his songs and too infrequent appearances, he insists in this wonderful book that you do your work, too. If you do it, however, and are at least marginally aware of the details of his life, you will find this extended riff on Bob Dylan's early years in New York as well as his reflections on family, fame, recording, and more to be deeply informative and most satisfying. In Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster, 2004, 320 pages, $27.00/11.99)He arrives in New York on a cold winter day, alone with only his guitar for company, not knowing anybody, but curious and open to his own experience. He's searching for Woody Guthrie, even then hospitalized in New Jersey, whose muse has drawn him to folk singing and wandering. He finds his way into the Greenwich Village of the late fifties with only the folk songs he's studied and learned, his dogged persistence, and his intelligence, and then burrows himself in the folk music culture of this interesting period roiling with cultural change in America reflected in the musical and social life of The Village. He begins visiting and then performing at little hole-in-the-wall venues where, during the afternoons, anyone can take the stage to sing, recite poetry, or find their own mode of expression, working for tips. He keeps his eyes open, soon meeting people who welcome him to flop on their couches or mattresses in their apartments. He meets, and cultivates in his own elusive way, Dave Van Ronk, and many other artistic and music business lights in the Village.Dylan describes crashing with Ray Gooch, whose Village apartment was filled with books that he dived into. In an extended riff, Dylan writes about what he read, saw, studied, picked up, put down, returned to and groped through to gain understanding, all the time soaking up a world of literature, history, and art he had become ready to indulge in and integrate into his yearning and experience. He's a virtual vacuum cleaner for seemingly random ideas, musical, literary and artistic, which he slowly but surely integrates. In its own discursive way, Dylan's story emerges. He writes about how Bobby Zimmerman became Bob Dylan through an interesting search for a name reflecting the personna he was constructing for himself. It, like much of the rest of the book, makes sense in its own seemingly rambling way. He begins to change, as well, in his concept of himself as a singer, moving from traditional and contemporary folk music to what he refers to as “topical” songs, being careful to remove himself as a “protest” singer, but rather an observer of the contemporary scene. While the narrative seems to wander, it's actually pretty straightforward, laced with references to reading, listening, interacting with the music community and the world in thoughtful and insightful ways. While the book seems to jump around a good deal, it, nevertheless, captures the person I think Dylan, at least, wants to be. As his celebrity increases, his resistance to being made into something he thinks he's not does, too. He consistently styles himself as a folk singer finding songs in his experience and his internal self. He resists becoming a symbol for the fantasies of others seeking to make him into a symbol. He describes the harassment from “pilgrims” seeking him, along with his growing sense of needing privacy and solitude to do his work. Robbie Robertson, of the Band, asks him, “Where do you think you're gonna take it?” as if he were a single driving force behind music. Life seems to represent his resistance to being styled in some way by others. He writes, “It was impossible for me to observe anything without being observed,” exploring the cost of his celebrity on the family life and creative existence he says he wants to pursue and fulfill. I can find nothing in the narrative that points to his seeking celebrity, much less the iconic status he has achieved. His reactions to attending this year's Nobel Prize award ceremonies represent a consistent response from him, as does the graceful statement he sent in.I'm struck by the need Dylan expresses, which seems very real to me, to live an ordinary family life in the midst of everyone else's desire to turn him into a symbol for something much larger. In the end, Dylan remains a song writer and story tell of unusual grace and breadth. He experiments, as he writes, “throws everything at the wall,” and much of it seems to work for some audience beyond his desires to be a more solitary, family oriented, singer and writer of songs. For, first of all, he's a writer. But the more I listen to him, the more I find him to be a wonderfull, affecting, and honest singer. It should come as no surprise to anyone that Bob Dylan can write. And he can think and sing. What some people might find surprising is that he's a real person, filled with all that portends, yet driven by the external forces of fame and celebrity to become something more. While he doesn't seek sympathy, reading his Chronicles evoked it in me. I find myself liking the person who emerges while, as has become my habit with books by and about musicians, listening to his songs with increasing understanding and empathy. Chronicles gives the reader entree into the real person Bob Dylan is. But, and it's a big But, the reader has to allow him his reality. In that “But” lies the enormous strength and charm of this book. By the middle, I found myself wishing him the peace of a privacy so difficult for him to achieve.Dylan's description of a decade-long low period in his career, from the late seventies through the eighties he describes a sense of disconnection from his own work, his sense that his career was going nowhere, that he no longer wanted to perform...just going through the motions. Leaving a rehearsal for a tour with the Grateful Dead, he drops into an obscure San Francisco jazz joint, hears a singer simply killing it, and has a revelation which turns him around. During the following European tour with Tom Petty, he sings eighty long-neglected songs from his catalog without a repeat and senses new energy and inspiration. Again, taken at his word, it rings completely true to me. There's an integrity to the writing as he digs within to describe the indescribable. I've always thought of Dylan as being non-communicative except in performance, but Chronicles is a performance, too, a journey where he takes the risks of self-discovery and finds what he's looking for.His chapter called “Oh Mercy” referring to what has been described as his “comeback album,” discusses song writing and performance, giving huge insights into Dylan's process. How he thinks, jumps from idea to idea while a concept emerges. He resents other people's over-analyzing, but gives himself to the willing reader and consumer of his music. But it must be on his terms. He won't let you take over for him or force him into a mold. His account of the period spent working in New Orleans with producer Danny Lanois to produce Oh Mercy captures the spirit of trying to build a collaborative relationship as well as presenting an impressionistic view of the city and a motorcycle trip with his wife to bayou country that's a joy to read, an extended riff that also helps reveal Dylan's creative process.“Folk music was all I needed to exist. Trouble was, there wasn't enough of it. It was out of date, had no proper connection the the actualities, the trends of the times. It was a huge story, but hard to come across.” (235) Dylan refers to himself throughout the book as a folk singer, rejecting the critics and fans who would make him into a cultural icon, a leader of a movement, a poet who spoke for and to a generation. For this refusal, for his stubborn insistence to follow his own muse and music, he paid a price, and kept his integrity and at least some independence. Over the more than fifty year course of his career, he has continued to discover himself and his music, while never kowtowing to the rapidly changing world of pop music, but always being aware of what's going on, listening, watching, learning.Dylan was a voracious consumer of the work of other singers and, later, song writers. Soon after leaving home, he discovered Woody Guthrie, whose work consumed him and helped set his course, until he heard “Ramblin” Jack Elliot, who had traveled with Guthrie, and whose confident singing awed him. Throughout the book, Dylan, explores the influences, both musical and literary, influencing him as well as examining his own inner workings. The amount of careful thought and deep searching that went into thinking through this book should not be underestimated, either in depth or in carefully structured writing. For anyone interested in Bob Dylan Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster, 2004, 320 pages, $27.00/11.99) is must reading. I enjoyed it and learned a lot, too. I bought the book from Amazon and read it on my Kindle App. fd

I quite enjoyed Mr. Dylan's highly descriptive, stream-of-consciousness writing style and I liked the way he seemingly jumped away from telling the story of his early years to some random point in the future, but then he pulled it all back together at the end by traveling back to the beginning. Not being a literary critic or anything close to it and having read this book many years after its release, all I can add to the conversation is that like his music, you'll either like his autobiography or you'll be confounded by it. He certainly does elicit strong opinions either way, which are fun to read. I've started thinking of him as one of the 20th/21st century's greatest trolls who just starts fires everywhere and then sits back and laughs. Not that I think this autobiography is a troll, not at all. I find it to be beautifully and purposefully written. I do think that some sections are taken directly from journal entries made right at the time -- the meetings with Archibald Macleish are a good example, and the detailed notes on the studio sessions. These take on a more crisp, direct writing style than the free-flowing, poetic recalled memories of his time as a hungry young folksinger in Greenwich Village. If you're one of those people who are coming to him now because of the Nobel, this autobiography isn't a bad place to start, but do understand that it's not what won him that prize. To get to the bottom of that, you'd have to listen to 55 years of music.

Bob Dylan has been the subject of many biographies, but not until the publication of his first memoir, Chronicles: Volume One, in 2004, did curious fans receive any autobiographical disclosure from the bard himself. Rather than using the book as an opportunity to set the record straight, however, the most curious thing about Chronicles is how Dylan goes out of his way to write about everything but himself. Nevertheless, it’s a lively and literate book that does, however indirectly, provide much-longed-for insight into the thought process of this great musician and songwriter.Chronicles is not a typical autobiography, but rather an examination of five different points in Dylan’s life. These stages do not appear in chronological order, and in the telling of them Dylan often flashes backward and forward to other scenes that happen to pop into his head. Three of the chapters focus on his early career, up to the point where he signed with Columbia Records. Too often the text reads like a catalog of influences, with Dylan listing off the acts he admired, the records he listened to, the books he read, and the movies he saw. In these early scenes, however, he does a great job of authentically recreating the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the 1960s. He purposely avoids making himself the star of these vignettes but rather functions literally as a chronicler, capturing in eloquent and vivid prose the sights and sounds of afternoons in smoky coffee shops and nights on borrowed couches. The reader at times feels as if he were young Dylan, just arrived from Minnesota and hunting for a gig. When he’s writing about the actual making of music, however, he’s far less successful. In the chapter entitled “Oh Mercy,” about the recording of the album of the same name in 1989, he talks in-depth about a new vocal technique that revolutionized his performances and a mathematical method of guitar playing that likewise transformed his music, but what he has to say about these topics is largely unintelligible. As to the album itself, he really gets into the nuts and bolts about how each song was written and recorded, but once again he’s virtually incomprehensible because he strings together more strange, folksy metaphors than a parody of Dan Rather. One would expect such a brilliant poet to be more articulate when talking about his craft. In this respect, Dylan could learn a thing or two from Neil Young. Young’s autobiography Waging Heavy Peace jumps all over the map topically and chronologically, but you never have trouble understanding what he’s saying. With Dylan it seems like deliberate obfuscation, either because he’s too shy for self-revelation, or he simply wants to preserve some of his rock-star mystique. In the most candid portion of the book, which revolves around the recording of the 1970 album New Morning, Dylan expresses his reluctance to adopt the mantle of “voice of a generation” that was so often thrust upon his shoulders. All he wanted was to make music and be a family man. Another highlight of the book is the final chapter, in which he details his youth in Minnesota and explains how he went from a Woody Guthrie tribute act to a songwriter in his own right.Though Chronicles may not be the perfect autobiography Dylan aficionados have long waited for, there’s plenty of nourishment here to at least temporarily satiate hungry fans. Perhaps the most gratifying thing about Chronicles is its subtitle, Volume One, indicating there’s more to come.

She investigates numerous processes central to making, working, and living in various professional and personal communities. ‘Hiking’ with wisdom and humility across the horizon of these years, she manages, nonetheless, to dig deeply…Highly recommended.”—S.E. Friedler, CHOICE“Hiking the Horizontal constructs a portrait of a compelling artist whose convictions are at the core of her creative engagement in dance—a choreographer whose activism is personal.”—Rita Felciano, Dance Chronicle"Hiking the Horizontal is a necessary addition to the libraries of dance aficionados and artists. But it also has much to offer to the broader dialogue on the arts. Lerman is thoughtful, insightful and gentle in her approach, and her message carries deep value."—Peter DeVries, Dance International“(R)eaders will be excited to evaluate and evolve their own practices. This book presented a cogent discussion of the evolution of dance as an art form.Insights presented were relevant to multiple fields.

Like her work itself, Lerman's book, Hiking the Horizontal, crosses boundaries in ways that are transformative for all who encounter it. The book emerges from her work in both "concert" and communal settings, i.e., from her decades of experience in both the professional/performance world and in senior centers, places of worship, scientific research facilities, universities, and beyond. So what results is an extraordinarily rich and generous sharing of her keen observations and of her probing, insatiable curiosity about humanity, society, community, art, religion, and, of course, dance. Her insights are simply brilliant, often astonishing, and conveyed in language that is intelligent yet relatable, philosophical yet down-to-earth. She invites readers to wonder and marvel along with her, and her invitation is irresistible. Whether you consider yourself an intellectual, spiritual, entrepreneurial, or creative soul, you will find this book profoundly thought-provoking, because regardless of your specific profession or interests, it will transform the way you think about the world and how you engage in it. As a rabbinical student, I have found selections in the book that are shaping how I see my role as a spiritual leader, how I understand community, how I will counsel and provide pastoral care, and how I understand innovation in relation to my religious tradition. The book helps me see some of the limits of our current societal and communal structures, constantly reminds me of the power of story, and teaches me tremendously important lessons about where religion and art intersect. The book also speaks to questions of personal spirituality, such as wholeness, prayer, transcending ourselves, and our sense of what is holy. I find reading Hiking the Horizontal to be a spiritual experience, in that it challenges me to be an attentive, creative, awake individual and begs me to think - and to act, to grow, and to reach - outside the box. The book, like the author's life's work, is a gift - a gift to a world that is aching for what it has to offer. -NICOLE ROBERTS, RABBINICAL STUDENT AT HEBREW UNION COLLEGE IN CINCINNATI, OH

The author, through the book’s title, rightly pointed out that 3D printing is the next technology goldrush. Chris Anderson, the author and entrepreneur who insightfully forecasted the emergence of the long tail and freemium business models, has predicted that 3D printing has given rise to the next industrial revolution. It is indeed a hot topic in the technology sector. More and more enterprises and individuals have bet on 3D printing taking off. This book shed light on both the business and technological aspects. It tells you what are the highly demanded products, how to outsource and expand your business. It also discusses in detail different types of 3D printing machines, software platform and what basic equipment you’ve got to have to start a business. The author shared lots of his personal experiences with the printing machines. These are interesting stories to read. There is a balance between plain technical details and readability. I don’t think it is a “business in a box” type of guide that enables you to start the printing business tomorrow, but you can expect to read some in-depth details that save you time on doing the research all by yourself. If you want to catch up with the 3D printing trend, this is a book to include in your reading list.

My first experience with 3D printing was almost 20 years ago when my dad showed me a small form he made on this huge machine from a CAD drawing. The technology was new, but I was so intrigued! Fast forward to 2013 and I finally bought my own 3D printer from a Kickstarter campaign.I am so glad I found this book. It an excellent read filled with both great ideas to help monetize your new 3D printer and also detailed information about advancements in the technology that give you a nice idea of what to expect over the next few years of this exciting technology. I would highly recommend this book to 3D printing enthusiasts or just anyone who is interested in discovering an alternative revenue stream that doesn't require a huge investment. A++

I enjoyed reading “The Next Technology Goldrush” last year and so when I heard that Makerbot had banned this new book, I had to see what all the fuss was about. Controversy has its appeal.Although Makerbot in its new corporate guise comes in for a fair bit of criticism, banning the book outright seem s to be a bit of an over reaction and is likely to only succeed in making the book more popular. While the author criticizes the company's move away from the open source ethos and questions whether a 3D printing manufacturer owning a 3D file repository is a conflict of interests, the sheer amount of information that he includes regarding his own Makerbot experiments is bound to drive 3D printer sales ever upward. It was great to see a book that included real examples of what I could be printing to make a printer pay for itself. Not many other books in this field are so clear cut in this area. I have not yet got around to buying a printer, but when I do I will certainly be exploring some of the fascinating income streams that are explored here. The book even inspired me to come up with a few ideas of my own.The other thing that surprised me about this book is its prescience. A lot of the predictions are already starting to come true. From the adoption of the new AMF format to Local Motors printing the first 3D printed car, this guy must have printed a crystal ball to be able to see so clearly what impacts this technology is having. Cannot wait to see if the rest of his predictions start coming true.

Adventures in 3D Printing is a fascinating book that explains everything you need to know about 3D printing. The author meticulously explains in thorough and understandable detail what 3D printing is and how it works. This book delivers the information in a way that is easily comprehended and leaves you fully aware. The author’s humor shines through and makes the book fun and enjoyable.I liked the examples of what can be made with a 3D printer and short stories of real people who have made significant money with their 3D creations. This gave me a spark of inspiration and put things into perspective for me.Author Christopher Winnan is uniquely qualified in this field spending most of his time in Asia analyzing the latest breakthroughs and technology. His expertise and grasp of the technology involved is apparent and reliable. If you are looking for information on 3D printing this is the book for you. Highly recommended!

I have found a bunch of books on 3D printing to be very boring and mostly just researched material. I really found myself actually enjoying this book as it was written from personal experiences. Great photos throughout of actual experiments helped to totally understand what you were reading. This author took time to explain simple enough that a novice can understand yet an experienced person doesn't get bored. Thumbs up!

Wonderful information and so well written that you can’t stop reading. If you were not sure about 3D printing, after reading this book you will be hooked! An amazing amount of information packed into this book. Very well written. I highly recommend!

It started out quick with engineering discussion about how 3d printers work but moved quickly to a discussionabout miniatures for most of the book. Id return it right now without blinking an eye. Its a complete rip off and Ideleted it from my kindle. If I had a hard copy Id throw it out

Well written book that explains many applications of 3D printing. Recommend for anyone who wants to know why 3D printers are useful. Many people ask me "what can it do". This book has pages and pages of answers, though some are far fetched!

As a regular visitor to Goa I found it very useful although I don’t have a hope of following up all the options presented. With the Kindle version it would be good to have an online link for comments from users,

Well organized and helpful, without shying away from the difficulties of the place. Very good resource.

Have not finished reading but seems adescription with good resources.I just read some more and I think it gives you a great idea of what Goa is like.

Only pictures of landscapes and Hindu people. Not a travel book at all.Quality and beauty are great, however,I was misled about being a travel book.

Delivered on time and as described.

This is the lamest guidebook I've ever encountered. The information is extremely thin and not well researched. A sizable chunk seems to have been copy/pasted from internet sites, where I've seen the same information. The Mumbai part is especially weak.

Amazon.com Review

Madeline, in all her incarnations over six decades, has remained first and foremost one of "twelve little girls in two straight lines" in an old house in Paris. Now, with news that will astound her many fans, not to mention Madeline herself, she and her 11 cohorts find themselves on their way to Texas, U.S.A. Madeline a wealthy cowgirl? Why not! She handles her marvelous windfall with her usual aplomb, donning denim and boots to hop aboard a horse for a tour of her newly inherited gold mines, stampeding cattle herds, and gushing oil fields. At the end of the day, Miss Clavel prepares to tuck 12 little girls into bed--but wait... there are only 11! Where's Madeline? Traditionalists need not fear that wealth will corrupt their favorite little orphan. Some surprises are still in store, even for Madeline. While sorting through his grandfather's files, artist and writer John Bemelmans Marciano discovered the manuscript and pencil sketches for this last of the much-loved Madeline series. With great respect, Marciano completed the project with full-color paintings, and added two more of Bemelmans's holiday classics--"The Count and the Cobbler" and "Sunshine"--to create a collection no Bemelmans and Madeline devotee can do without. From Publishers Weekly

Alas, this seems like ersatz MadelineAbut try telling that to the hordes of Madeline fans who will clamor for it. As a note explains, during the 1950s Bemelmans drafted a Madeline adventure set in Texas at Christmas and featuring the department store owned by his friend Stanley Marcus; a version was passed out to Neiman-Marcus customers, and Bemelmans abandoned the project. Here his grandson supplies his own color illustrations for the discarded text; the quantum difference between Bemelman's offhand genius and the product here is revealed with a simple comparison of sketches drawn by Bemelmans, reproduced on the back of the jacket, with the extrapolations inside. The text, clearly a work in progress, splices together a story line from Madeline and the Gypsies with a cowboy motif and a big promotion for "the world's greatest store"; the heroine, inheriting a Texas-size fortune, seems unlike the "real" Madeline ("And there'll be no more school, that is the best part./ For who is rich is already smart," opines this impostor). Two other Bemelmans tales with Christmas settings are also included, with art similarly refurbished by Marciano. Ages 5-8. (Oct.) Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

We love this book

I gave this and other Madeline books to two great nieces and I also gave them Madeline Dolls. Their Mother said it was her favorite story as a child and she freaked when I gave them to her girls. I believe she enjoyed them more than the kids. The kids were apalled that I did not know the doll had an appendectomy scar.

Bought this to replace a copy lost by a student. This was library bound and in much better condition than I expected.

Even though these are tales that are completed by Bemelmans' grandson, I barely noticed the differences. My children and I enjoy reading all of the Madeline series, so much so, that we have purchased all of them. I highly recommend this book.

The Madeline stories complete our nursery, from Peter Rabbit to Babar. Purchased the stuffed animals/doll to complement our twins' children's classics-themed room. Great stories to read when the babies are older. Living in San Antonio, the Alamo book cover is perfect.

excellent

This is really a reprint of Madeline Goes to Texas. For anyone with a Texas heritage, it is an essential part of your library!

I loved the Madeline stories as a child and can now share these wonderful tales with my children at bedtime or anytime. The illustrations are whimsical and the stories surrounding our fearless little heroine are captivating... A real classic!

The Trial of Joan of Arc

Review

The record of Joan of Arc's 1431 heresy trial is one of the most significant primary sources historians have for understanding this young woman's life and beliefs. Now Hobbins, who teaches history at the University of Texas, has produced what is sure to be the definitive edition of the trial documents...Especially valuable is Hobbins's 32-page introduction, which assesses the reliability of the text, explains medieval court procedure, and offers a description and evaluation of Joan herself...Sure to find wide use in classrooms, this text promises to transport any reader who wishes to go back in time with Joan of Arc. (Publishers Weekly 2005-09-21)Joan of Arc, the French peasant girl who claimed God instructed her to lead the French army to victory at Orléans during the Hundred Years' War, has intrigued people for centuries. Captured by the Burgundians in 1430, she was held in a secular prison and tried the following year. Hobbins has translated the entire Latin text of the trial as found in Pierre Champion's Proces de Condamnation de Jeanne d'Arc (1920), providing introductions and--in the case of matters dealing with court procedure rather than the actual trial--summaries. His translation is the first in 50 years. The text documents Joan's belief in the voices she heard, her resistance to authority, her 'err' in faith to the Mother Church, and her immodest men's dress. After four months of trial, she submitted to a retraction and some rehabilitation but continued to wear men's clothing and was eventually burned at the stake as a relapsed heretic. This trial transcript demonstrates her lack of intimidation by authority. (L. Kriz Library Journal 2005-10-15)The Trial of Joan of Arc is a translation of those illuminating Latin trial records by Daniel Hobbins...It is in these records that Joan speaks and her words--though filtered through the pens of enemies determined to mark her a blasphemous liar and heretic--are capable of moving anyone reading them, hence the numerous authors and poets that have been bewitched, including the likes of Leonard Cohen, Hilaire Belloc and Mark Twain...Joan's replies, no matter how edited, have ensured her place in history not as a heretic burned at the stake as her inquisitors wanted, but as national hero, a saint, a fable, a myth--everything this trial tried to suppress. (Gerry Bellett Vancouver Sun 2006-02-25)[Hobbins'] careful translation, the first in 50 years, may well become the definitive edition. (Janice Farnham America 2006-05-08)Given Joan's celebrity, Daniel Hobbins's translation and commentary on the records (both in Latin and French) of her trial are welcome. His review of the transcripts and their subsequent interpretation by scholars over the last two centuries is a model of economy and clarity...In his historical commentary and excellent translation of the trial records, Hobbins does justice not only to both visionary and soldier, but also to the extraordinary peasant girl who amazed and troubled her contemporaries, and has continued to bedevel historians ever since. (Herbert Berg Journal of Church and State 2007-04-01)While no portraits of Joan of Arc survive from her lifetime, we are very fortunate to have access to the record of her trial in several languages, including this latest, first-rate edition in English. Daniel Hobbins...does an excellent job not only with his translation of the original texts themselves (in medieval French and Latin), but also with his introduction to the trial, Joan’s life and the importance of the trial record as medieval literature...It is an engrossing read, regardless of one’s academic background. (Patricia Grimshaw H-Net Online 2006-09-01)Daniel Hobbins’s English translation of the three Latin and French legal records of proceedings against Joan of Arc contains both a readable translation and a valuable commentary on the trials’ context and importance. The records correct many misconceptions about what actually happened during the trials...Those wishing to understand how fifteenth century politics, inquisitorial procedure and gender constraints condemned a nineteen year old girl for wearing male garb and acting as a soldier (among many other charges) would profit from reading Hobbins’s translation. (Laurence W. Marvin Journal of Military History 2008-04-01)

These transcrips of the trial along with the author's commentary point out vividly the ividious trail of Joan of Arc. The English party both hated and feared her. They used the inquisition to condemn a political prisioner to death just to illegitimatze the King of France.Although Pierre Cauchon tried to disguise his animosity by presenting to the world a legally conducted trial, he violated every canon of a fair trial, and abused his office of Bishop. There is no credence in the author's supersition that the Bishop of Beauvais tried to save Joan from death by having her declared a repentive heritic thereby sentencing her to imprisonment. The evil bishop engineered her relapse for the sole purpose of putting her to death.Anyone interested in hearing Joan's own words and in reading a prime source of history will find this book facinating. It is not a book for those who like romantic history.

If you have endnotes in an Ebook you HAVE to have the number on the page link to the endnote itself. It is infuriating that something so simple was overlooked. Why?I had to buy this book for class. Not my choice. But if I'm going to spend the money the least I expect is a decent Ebook.

This is a wonderful translation of the trial documents well organized! It is extremely helpful to have the documents put in an order that is easy to read and understand.

This is a wonderfully accurate and compelling translation of the trial. Very proud to have had the author as a professor. Highly recommend both for academic and entertainment purposes.

Extremely well translated. Exactly what I was hoping for.

Critics of this book simply miss the point. This is the best, virtually the only, complete transcript of the trial at which Joan was questioned. It is beside the point that there was a retrial under friendly auspices later. The drama is in the first trial, and the arguments against the accuracy of the record have been wildly overstated. I do hope the translator will also do the second trial. It is less dramatic but a full portrait of Joan requires both.

I give the trial text of Daniel Hobbins’ “The Trial of Joan of Arc” 5 stars. I would give his introduction less than 1 star if I could. People with a more then a casual interest in Joan will certainly want this book, along with W. P. Barrett’s “The Trial of Jeanne d’Arc.”If I could only have one or the other, I would get Mr. Barrett’s book, hands down, for reasons I will try to explain below. My review is only about the Introduction.Mr. Hobbins writes (Page 11): “After receiving their (the Poitiers examiners) cautious approval, he (the Dauphin) sent her (Joan) to Orleans, where she arrived on April 29; in a spectacular turn of events, the French broke the siege on May 8. More than anything else she accomplished, her supporters considered this victory the great sign of her authenticity.Notice how Mr. Hobbins leaves Joan out of the victory; he doesn’t give her sole, exclusive, and extraordinary credit. He is the only one; even her enemies gave her “credit,” albeit as a “limb of the fiend.”Mr. Hobbins writes (page 10) “Joan had been an international celebrity for almost 2 years by the time the trial began.” Kim Kardashian is a “celebrity;” Joan was a heroine and a saviour to the French, a scourge to the English, a “celebrity” to neither.Mr. Hobbins writes (page 26): “The most famous Joan of Arc specialist of the twentieth century, Regina Pernoud…” To Mr. Hobbins, Joan is a “celebrity,” and Dame Pernoud is “famous.” When Paris Hilton is a celebrity and Ted Bundy is famous, these words cannot be considered complimentary – or accurate. Mr. Hobbins reduces greatness to public notoriety. Perhaps he thinks no one can be great? Perhaps he thinks of Joan’s acts as legendary, despite the vast treasure of contemporaneous documents?Mr. Hobbins suppresses one abuse of Pierre Cauchon on page 11. Mr. Hobbins writes: “Pierre Cauchon, the bishop in whose Diocese Joan was taken, thus had jurisdiction over the trial…” In fact, Cauchon had had to flee his Diocese BECAUSE of Joan’s victories; he wasn’t de facto bishop of anything. Cauchon was “granted” territory in Rouen in order to conduct his “beautiful trial,” one of the many irregularities that Mr. Hobbins ignores.Mr. Hobbins writes (page 12): From our perspective the ultimate dominance of the French king and nation might seem inevitable, merely a matter of time, and all the French who supported Burgundy might appear traitors to the fatherland. This is an illusion produced by hindsight.” I suggest it is a REALITY produced by Joan of Arc; it is what she created, and what she lived and died for. Here might be Mr. Hobbins’ basic difference from anyone likely to want to read the trial text.Mr. Hobbins writes (page 12): “Cauchon was a careerist, and in this respect neither more wicked nor more virtuous then other such men.” Mr. Hobbins must have a very low opinion of Church prelates, if he believes that. Is it normal to jail and threaten with death other clergy who aren’t anxious to murder innocent girls?Mr. Hobbins writes (Page 15): The outcome (of the Nullification trial) was inevitable. What does this mean? Mr. Hobbins should be more precise. Was the result of the Nullification Trial “inevitable” because of the outrageous defects of Joan’s Stalinist show-trial, or does Mr. Hobbins regard the Nullification trial as just another show-trial under a different despot?Mr. Hobbins also remarks that Joan’s family came away from the Nullification Trial “empty handed” (page 15). Joan was utterly vindicated and the Archbishop of Rheims declared the condemnation trial and sentence “to be contaminated with fraud, calumny, wickedness, contradictions, and manifest error of fact and law, and together with the abjuration, the execution, and all their consequences to have been and to be null, without value or effect, and to be quashed.” (Dame Pernoud, “The Retrial of Joan of Arc," Page 194). What does Mr. Hobbins think the family wanted? To be “famous?” To be “celebrities?”Mr. Hobbins writes (page 15): “(After the Nullification Trial) there was no discussion whatsoever about making Joan into a saint – that was the work of the twentieth Century.” Dame Pernoud writes in “Joan of Arc: By Herself and Her Witness” page 272: “They (the French people since the fifteenth century) canonized Joan and made her their heroine, while Church and State were taking five hundred years to reach the same conclusion.”On pages 25-27, Mr. Hobbins types nonsense about how Cauchon wanted to HELP Joan: “The only way for Joan to survive was through an abjuration of heresy…” (Page 27) Did Cauchon “help” Joan by suppressing the testimony obtained in Domremy of her virtuous life? Did Cauchon “help” Joan by suppressing the results of her examination for signs of virginity? Did Cauchon “help” Joan by threatening with death and imprisonment those who tried to ACTUALLY help Joan? If Cauchon didn’t want Joan to “relapse,” he would have consigned her to an ecclesiastical prison, guarded by women. The over-scrupulous trial record is evidence of Cauchon’s awareness of guilt, not evidence of a clear conscience. Cauchon knew he would be criticized for his beautiful show-trial, and the trial record was confected to withstand the inevitable scrutiny. This is why Cauchon included Joan’s “public” appeal to the Pope; her appeal was PUBLIC, how could Cauchon not include it? The trial record is as self-serving as everything else Cauchon did.Mr. Hobbins writes (page 32): At this point in the trial (after Joan’s “adjuration”) her decision was made and her judges really had no choice but to deliver her to the secular arm as a relapsed heretic.” Even after her “relapse,” 39 out of 42 of those “judges” voted to preach to Joan, and read and explain the cedule to her, not burn her immediately, according to Dame Pernoud, “Joan of Arc, By Herself and Her Witnesses,” Page 215. Mr. Hobbins is simply wrong. Anyway, Joan was never turned over to and sentenced by “secular justice,” in Cauchon’s haste to murder her.I don’t see why Mr. Hobbins included “commentary” like this. Bernard Shaw wrote much the same tripe in “St. Joan,” but that was a play written for a general audience. This nonsense is gratuitously included in a book that only people familiar with Joan are going to want to read; precisely the audience that is equipped to reject Mr. Hobbins’ opinions, musings, speculation, and Cauchon apologetics; precisely the audience that regards Dame Pernoud not as “famous,” but as a leader, pioneer, heroine, and scholarly Joan of Arc.This is off the subject, but I figure if anyone has read this far, maybe they can answer 5 questions and consider a couple of observations:One: Cauchon cited Deuteronomy 22:5 in order to condemn Joan to death for wearing men’s clothes. Cauchon didn’t obey the Torah; he ate pork and shellfish and, being French, snails; he didn’t observe the Sabbath. What gives? Two: Joan’s banner featured Christ holding the earth. Wasn’t the earth supposed to be flat then? How could He hold it?Three: What were the signs of Joan’s virginity? Surely, after riding thousands of miles on horseback, and charging France’s enemies wielding a lance, her hymen was not intact.Four: The "Old" Calendar was in effect in France in 1429. Doesn't Orleans celebrate Joan's liberation of the city on the wrong date?Five: Joan is constantly talking to the English and they are talking back to her. I know that the aristocrats spoke French, but surely others, such as her low-life guards at Rouen and the soldiers shouting insults at her from their forts outside the walls of Orleans didn't. It's like a "Star Trek" episode where the aliens, whether they look like potted plants or lizards, all speak English. Could Joan speak English? Could the English, even the most plebeian, speak French? Why would her persecutors ask her if her voices spoke English unless she spoke English? They would not ask Joan if her voices spoke Pashto or Persian.Comment One: I don't think the people of Orleans get enough credit for their 600 year history of devotion to Joan - or their crucial role in the liberation of their city. The people of Orleans attacked the "back" of the Tourelles on their own initiative. The Orleanais also set fire to one of the city barges and drove it under the bridge that led to the drowning of Glasdale and many of his men. (Joan of Arc, A Military Leader, Kelly Devries, Page 89.) The enthusiasm and initiative of the people of Orleans - inspired by Joan, to be sure - was essential in the raising of the siege.Comment Two: I have a theory about Joan's laugh at her "adjuration." (See Dame Pernoud, By Herself and Her Witnesses, Page 209) Assume Joan was read the 8 line "credule," which forbade her from bearing arms, wearing men's clothes, and cutting her hair. In signing, she would be "adjuring" only things she didn't care about (her hair), would need no longer (men's clothes if, as she understood, she would be sent to an Ecclesiastical prison), and things she couldn't do anyway (bear arms). I suspect Joan laughed at the thought of all this effort, expense, and pressure to make her sign a meaningless document. Any thoughts?

The basis for questioning the accuracy of Joan of Arc's condemnation trial transcript has not been its date of creation, but the myriad ways in which the trial was rigged. Joan of Arc was a famous political prisoner. Her trial was funded by the government she had warred against and numerous court officials worked under compulsion, some even under death threats. Court clerks later testified under oath that portions of the official transcript were altered. This document did not stand the test of time. A quarter century later the verdict was overturned. While this remains an important historical source, it lacks the weight that court records normally carry. Serious scholars will prefer the Latin original. English translations are already available for free on the Internet. A new translation that makes suspect claims for the document's value is not what the English speaking public needs.I wish Professor Hobbins well and hope he follows up with a translation of Joan of Arc's retrial transcript. A complete and adequate version has never been readily available in English.

I used to love school but hated note taking. My son is getting ready to start college and he doesn't take notes - at all. We have discussed this and he knows that he needs to develop a system so have both just read Mike Danford's "Note Taking Made Easy". This is a wonderful guide for anyone who needs to figure out how to shortcut the note taking process. Danford helps the reader decipher what the important things are to jot down, some great focusing techniques, ways to review notes effectively, and many other awesome tips. Wonderful guide on note taking that I wish I'd had a long time ago.

This is a very easy read. Doesn't bog you down with tons of gibberish to bore you. My teenage daughters both red this also and thought it was quite helpful. I am going to recommend they re-read this periodically just to remind them of some of the things mentioned that you may forget it you are not using it frequently. I did receive this Better NOte Taking Made Easy book at a discounted rate in exchange for my honest and unbiased review and would recommend this to any student that needs to take notes.

I received this download for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review. As a mom in college, I struggle finding time to study my notes, so I am always looking for advice to simplify my routine. By shortening the time to take notes, I can just as easily rewrite my notes to learn the material. The steps in this digital book are wonderful, no brainers I wish I would have thought of myself! The ultimate test will be improved grades! I am hopeful!

Great little book on taking notes. I got it for my son who is about to start college. I think he will find it very useful. We are never taught how we should take notes, so thank you so much for this book. It's very practical for someone entering college or for those who want to improve their skills and make study easier. I received this product at a discounted price in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Tips are good, although most of it you can find if you search "Note taking tips".If you didn't pay attention in school when you were younger this book can help probably.I didn't learn anything new but was still an okay read.I bought this book at a discount for a review.

I received this product at a discount for my unbiased review. I have always hated studyin and u never knew how to do it correctly but this has some great tips and he really helped me study so much more effectively. Would recommend this to others.

This book give you tips, tricks and scenarios. It's interactive and makes you pay attention. It's put in to note form with bulletins for easy comprehensionI received this item at a discount for my honest review

As someone who made a nice little income in college selling my chemistry notes to fellow students to study from before exams, I was curious to see if there was anything I could learn from this book. It was a short little read that didn't take me long at all. The information in it was pretty basic - most of which I think I'd picked up by highschool. I can see however that for someone who hasn't learned to take notes efficiently, this book wuld be great for giving them a starting point on what to focus on to improve their note taking skills. The thing I took issue with however in this book was the actual writing. In what was I am assuming an attempt to make the book easy to read, the language is mostly simple and almost written as if being spoken by someone the reader is good friends with. Then all of a sudden there will be a series of sentences whose only purpose seems to be to attempt to impress me with how extensive the writers vocabulary is. I found myself having to go back to read these sentences multiple times just to figure out what was being said. This happened enough times that I found it distracting.I did receive this book at a discount in return for an honest and unbiased review. Overall I think it contains some useful information that someone wishing to improve their note taking skills will find helpful.
