Didnt really buy this thinking i would be interested in reading the whole thing…just maybe learn a little something about a profession i had never experienced. Being a mom with 3 ungrateful picky eaters and one unappreciative entitled spouse, i had always very much appreciated being served when dining out but could never understand why my husband was such a cheapskate tipper. I was always in total awe that a complete stranger who neither knew us nor cared to would take the thankless job of trying to please us for 15% of the cost of our meal. While my husband begrudged him even that 15%... I still dont believe i'll ever understand my husband's attitude but i do feel i understand yours now. You are a decent, kind and caring person who needed a job and you'd have made a TERRIBLE and short term server if you hadn't possessed the above mentioned attributes as well as having a keen wit, a healthy defensive wealth of sarcasm and alcohol, a solid grasp of people's flaws and vulnerabilities and the ability to see them as they're incapable of seeing themselves yet accepting them anyway (on ur own terms) and you're not so totally self absorbed that you're too blind to take a good look at yourself when it is necessitated. You've only just tapped into a wealth of stories you have to write about. People.....the tip of ur iceberg! I loved ur book and thoroughly and sincerely enjoyed every bit of it! Thanks for sharing ur stories - keep 'em coming!!! I'll be waiting with my expresso!

Either you or someone you know has made statements like, "everyone should work in the restaurant industry at some point in their life," or "they should make a sitcom about that restaurant." Well, after reading this you will know why they say that.Being a waiter is an occupation that seemingly everyone can do, but why is there such high turnover? What could be complicated about bringing me the thing that I ordered? Why is it not considered "a real job?"There are politics and dynamics that only exist in this world. Pick up the book and you will have a better understanding of it and laugh through your education.

This is a combination autobiography (of the author's years spent as a waiter, primarily his several year period at the "Bistro" restaurant), as well as his humorous, sad, and dystopian story of being a waiter. Based on his real-life experiences, it is eye-opening and enlightening about how restaurants are run, and the life of a waitperson (along with the rest of the restaurant staff). The author originated a blog called "Waiter's Rant" a few years before the book was published and the surprising success of his blog prompted him to write this book. He is rather talented as a writer. The book is interesting, funny, and provides marvelous insight into human nature at play in restaurant waiter-customer transactions. Some of the content is laugh out loud, but most of it is, well, a "rant" about not only customers, but restaurant owners, fellow waitpersons, cooks, busboys, hostesses, and the peaks and valleys of living on the benevolence (tips) of customers. Towards the end the writing gets rather discouraging as the author goes into full rant mode about desperately wanting to get out of the "Bistro" nightmare. While I enjoyed the book, and I recommend it strongly to anyone who wants some juicy insights into the restaurant business, and waitperson's in particular (how to act, now not to act, what retribution may come your way if your cross swords with your waitperson, etc.), I wonder what this talented writer can do next? He certainly has a way with the twist of a phrase, writes interesting dialogue, tongue-in-cheek humor, and use of language, but it seems he's used it all up in this book on his "life occupation." I wish him the best, and hope he can come up with another genre and make it interesting. Bottom line, I enjoyed the book.

Dublanica sees every person -- customers, coworkers, restaurant owners, movie stars -- as a human being with human motives and foibles. He does spend a lot of time skewering them, but with occasional flashes of warm sympathy. He is also unsparing in self-analysis.On the negative side: the chapters become repetitious and tedious, particularly the stream of irritating customers (although maybe Dublanica is subtly chronicling his increasing disenchantment with the job -- the customers aren't getting ruder with time; he's burning out). This book would be better if it were shorter.

This book was exactly what I expected it to be - one man's experience over years of employment in the restaurant hospitality industry. My son has worked in this industry over the years too and many of the incidents described were similar to his experiences. The take-aways for me are how physically demanding this job is as well as mentally exhausting - that a holiday may mean more tips but also increases the amount of abuse taken from customers and the physical demands of covering understaffed sections. Maybe understanding that will make consumers more kind and patient unless we are truly getting poor service. Interesting read - I like learning about various occupations and recommend this book for one person's inside look.

Steve Dublanica has a talent for telling a story. Unlike Kitchen Confidential, this book lets us in on some of the back kitchen and front of the house shenanigans in some of the best New York restaurants. I laughed while I learned how to get better service and how to be more understanding if my waiter/waitress is just having a bad night. I hurried through this book because it was hard to put down. That's five stars in my book!

Great book.

The original Flat Stanley was really an interesting idea, my son and I enjoyed it thoroughly. We always get the new Flat Stanley adventures and we enjoyed the read, but it didn't quite have the magic of the previous books. Well worth the money, just not quite the same.

My 7 years old loves this book and all series.

Grandson loves these books.. He enjoys reading them with his mom and myself.

Bought for my 7 year old son and he loved it! Loved how he was asking questions and engaging in the story!

Bought a set of Flat Stanley Books for my grandson and he devoured them!! Read many of them more than once. A great series of books for elementary age children!

Ok book not my favorite one but not the worst book either thank you and have a very nice day

My son still rereads these books a year later. He read these as a first grader initially and now still reads all of the flat stanley books he can get his hands on. Great for a first time chapter book to get kids into reading as well as to teach geography of the world while having fun doing it.

It was not what I would call an objective review.

Samuel Sandmel (1911-1979) was a Reform Rabbi, who was director of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation in 1939-1942; then served as a chaplain during WWII; then was director of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation at Yale University from 1946-1949; then taught Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt University from 1949-1952, and at Hebrew Union College in 1952-1968; then in 1968-69 was Visiting Honorary Principal of the Leo Baeck College in London. He wrote many other books, such as The Hebrew Scriptures: An Introduction to Their Literature and Religious Ideas,Judaism and Christian Beginnings,A Jewish Understanding of the New Testament,Philo of Alexandria: An Introduction,Herod: Profile of a Tyrant,The Enjoyment of Scripture: The Law, the Prophets, and the Writings, etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 164-page paperback edition.]He wrote in the Preface of this 1965 book, “I have written this little book for those thoughtful Jewish people who seek to arrive at a calm and balanced understanding of where Jews can reasonably stand with respect to Jesus… a great number of able rabbis, normally make two points. The first of these is that those Christian views which regard Jesus as more than a man are inconsistent with Judaism and uncongenial to Jews… The second is that those virtues ascribed to Jesus the man, the ‘Jewish Jesus,’ are characteristic Jewish virtues, expressed in Judaism and integrally a part of it. Such a Jewish Jesus may well have been a good and great man---a prophet, a rabbi, or a patriotic leader---but he was not better or greater… than other great Jews… What I have tried to do is treat the complex question with what I hope is a little more profundity.” (Pg. vii-viii)He continues, “More specifically, I have tried to provide a small book that Jewish parents, after they themselves have read it, might put into the hands of college-age students. It has been my observation that a Jewish youngster, away from home and sharing in the great adventure of higher education with fellow students who are Christians, could benefit from such an endeavor… I am reconciled in advance to the possibility that what I say may offend some Christians who read this book. But the intention with which I set forth the ensuing views… I hope cannot possibly be misconstrued.” (Pg. ix)In the Introduction, he admits, “I must be straightforward in saying that my approach is partisan; it is Jewish and not neutral. At the same time I am something of a scholar, and that implies, if not neutrality, at least an effort toward objectivity… I shall be treating dispassionately materials about which people have felt great passion and ardor… I own to being influenced in my attitude toward Christianity by warm sympathy for it, and even concern and respect.” (Pg. 4)He points out, “It is a Jewish belief that when man atones, God may, if He so determines, forgive. We might put it in this way, that in the Jewish view man is prone to sinful acts, but man can atone, and God forgives. In the Christian view man is in his innate nature a sinner, and atonement implies a change in man’s nature. Man cannot unaided work this transformation; in other words, man himself cannot atone. Instead, atonement must be wrought for man by the Christ.” (Pg. 45-46)He states, “To us Jesus is never more than a man, and deeply as some of us Jews are able to sympathize with the tragedy of his life and death, we do not see in it any special working of the divine.” (Pg. 48)He observes, “Christians in general incline … that the four Gospels give interpretations of the one Jesus. My own opinion goes in a different direction, for I believe that one gets from the Gospels not one Jesus but four. This opinion derives from more than just the study of the Gospels. In the age of Jesus the portrait of Abraham was embellished by Philo, by Josephus… and later, by the rabbis… We cannot be precise about Jesus. We can know what the Gospels say, but we cannot know Jesus… we are more apt to find that the Gospels obscure than reveal him.” (Pg. 123-124)He concludes, “I am not a Christian; I do not share in those convictions which make Christians of men. Moreover, I am inextricably bound up in my Judaism. Yet I have no disposition to set the one against the other, and to make meaningless comparisons. I do not regard Judaism as objectively superior to Christianity nor Christianity to Judaism. Rather, Judaism is mine, and I consider it good, and I am at home in it, and I love it, and want it. That is how I want Christians to feel about their Christianity. Wherever and whenever there is opportunity to collaborate with Christians, provided it can be done with full dignity and full candor, I am willing, even eager to do so… There can be no possible outcome from the perpetuation of outworn grievances except the creation of new ones, and nothing more misdirected than for American Jews and Christians to maintain an outmoded feud which is contrary to the explicit ideals of both.” (Pg. 151)This book remains of great interest to anyone interested in relations between Christians and Jews, as well as in inter-religious dialogue.

#312,901 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The content caps off the first 2 books well as I have been learning some new information but must remark on how amateurish it has been for a Orin and his editors to have a lesson summary in Ch3 Lesson 1 saying to enable recursion to stop a DoS when you want to DISABLE recursion as earlier in chapter mentions. Then in that same Ch 3 lesson 1 on advanced DNS, the questions line up to answers about DHCP being lesson 1 on page 200! DHCP is really lesson 2.. It get's better for CH 3.. Lesson 2 and 3 answers are IPAM. Opps. This was the highlight of misprints so far and I am only on Ch 3. It takes his Administering 2012R2 book's misprints/typos found through the last few chapters and ups it a full notch so rely on his writing only for any new knowledge you can get, not to validate your knowledge with his multiple choice questions/answers. Also be on the look out for misprints in the summaries, it's there to see if you really know your stuff.. I would be upset paying more for a hardcopy having such misprints and will be getting a kick out of the upcoming chapters if the misprints get worse than what I have previously seen.**Update once I reached Ch 8. I honestly hate reading this book by Orin. The misprints and lack of clarity written as each chapter progresses now leave me confused where I must click his referenced TechNet links just to understand what he should have been talking about. TechNet reads beautifully whereas Orin writes lick a drunkard with run-on sentences, contradictions and lack of critical details conveyed. For example, Hyper-V Shared Nothing.. Key point he failed to mention is that you must be on same AD domain. Hyper-V Replica Brokers, page 525. is another example of how poorly written this was. "Hyper -V Replica is not necessary if Hyper-V Replica is being performed between Hyper-V hosts that are not participating in a failover cluster."

Not as complete as I'd expect. It mentions a lot of things and doesn't explain them or how to do them. This book often leaves you wondering how to do some of the things it mentions which is unfortunate because that's what I thought this book was for.Aside from that complaint, it does have a lot of good information too.

I like the book so far as it has a lot of hands on exercises but some of the labs could use proof reading. Great content but supplement this with other resources.

Great book for helping with getting ready for MSCA. Like that it is written by Microsoft and covers a lot of information in a easy to read format. Just need to finish and go take the exam!

Not a very detailed book. Very short on description of the topics. Lots of lab work which helps studying for the exam but the description of the labs also lacks detail and clear objectives. Would have been nice if the labs came on a DVD but instead you have to setup everything yourself. Also a PDF version of the book would have been nice.

Arrived well packaged and item was as described, happy with purchase.

Excellent material, but some of the labs could use more proofreading, they sometimes are missing steps, or have misleading directions.

Considering Microsoft is the one that develops their exams and their exam questions come right out of their Exam Ref's, there's no real other choice. The Microsoft Training Guide's and Exam Ref's should be your go-to guide to everything Microsoft.

#250 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I don't understand all the hype about this book. Rachel Hollis's life experience is so near perfect and so far removed from that of the average woman, that there is almost nothing in this book that is actually relatable. She uses the following examples in her book:1. She dropped out of school at 19 to pursue her successful event planning business that catered to Hollywood celebrities.2. She had one intimate relationship outside of marriage. They broke up for two days. On the third day he professed his love and they ended up getting married.3. Although they have four children, she and her husband struggled with infertility for eight months.4. Hollis admits she has a mean streak and uses the example of making fun of a girl in high school for shaving her toes.5. Hollis also shares in the book that she peed her pants on a trampoline and had a cavity at one point.6. Almost every chapter talks about how she made the Forbes "Top 40 Under 40 list", runs her own multi-million dollar company, and is a "good Christian girl".Perhaps this book could be appreciated by women who have lived a very blessed and sheltered life. But for anyone who has ever had to deal with real life issues such as poverty, illness, abuse, depression, co-dependency, dysfunctional families, loneliness, etc. I recommend you look elsewhere because this book will come across as one long never-ending humblebrag. All eight women in my book club agreed that the book had a tone that was "inauthentic", "judgmental", and "preachy". If you want to read truly authentic, genuine work that sheds light on overcoming human imperfections and failings, I recommend reading Jeanette Walls, Cheryl Strayed, and Elizabeth Gilbert. These female authors have lived very imperfect lives - like most of us - and you will find their work far more relatable than this book which comes across as self-aggrandizing propaganda. I ended up returning the book for a full refund, which I never do.Note: My original one-star review of the book (which 93 people found helpful in the first 3 days) was reported to Amazon and removed for not meeting "community standards" even though the tone was very respectful. I'm sharing this because it might help explain all the five-star reviews.

I've been following Rachel Hollis for years. Up until now, her message has resonated with me. As a lifestyle blogger, she produced great content, but her recent evolution into a self-proclaimed "mogul," has bothered me for the last year. Unfortunately, "Girl Wash Your Face" is "Mogul Rachel" instead of her previous, likable self. Here are my issues with the book:1. The fake "hey ya'll" language.Hollis may have (VERY) recently moved to Austin, Texas (where I also live), but don't be fooled by her plastered-on attempts at sounding "down home." She is simply emulating greater, authentic Texas writers such as Jen Hatmaker and Brene Brown. She grew up in Southern California and most recently lived in Glendale.Texans have a phrase: "Don't California My Texas." This applies to written work, too.2. The non-stop humble-bragging.We get it, Rachel, you are productive and work hard. Guess what - you also have a full-time nanny, full-time housekeeper, and an ACTUAL mogul of a husband to bankroll your PR expenditures, new staff hires, and property purchases. If your readers could afford to "run a company" and also not take a salary for 6+ years (while still having weekly mani/pedis, daily blowouts, etc.) I'm sure we all could be a "mogul" in our own way.3. The dangerous, non-expert advice.Hollis does not have a formal degree or certification of any kind, beyond a high school diploma. She is 100% unqualified to give advice in the areas of physical and mental health, relationships, trauma/recovery, and life management. Marrying the only guy you've ever dated and having kids doesn't make you a relationship expert. It makes you a wife and mother. Losing weight and exercising doesn't making you a trainer or nutritionist. It makes you a person who has eaten well and exercised to better health. And experiencing trauma and having a therapist does NOT make you a mental health professional. It makes you someone who has worked through their own issues.4. The strategic "Christian-ish" positioning. This book is categorized under the "Christian Books" section on Amazon and similar retailers. This is a tactic by the author and publisher to rank higher and make the NYT's best-seller list. Those who have read the book have already noted the lack of actual Christian content. I mean, Rachel doesn't even thank God in the acknowledgements section! She does thank her nanny, though.5. The unoriginal, co-opted thoughts. Anyone who has read ANY of the following authors will see their content co-opted (and unattributed) throughout this entire book: Tony Robbins, Oprah, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jen Hatmaker, Brene Brown.I could go on, but I think I've made my point. I'll sum up my thoughts on this book in two words: derivative drivel.

My goodness I was sucked in due to the hype of this book. OMG, NO. Rachel is so entitled and preachy and comes across as exactly the kind of person I detest. Everything in the book was "me me me!!!" and offered no insight to real problems. This book made me irrationally angry, which I think is the exact opposite of what it was intended to do.

Like so many other reviewers, I wanted to love it... So many of my friends have nothing but praises for the book, so I bought it.I’ve been disappointed from the start. I ended up feeling so annoyed that I wasn’t able to finish the book.I felt like it was too much “me me me” and humble bragging, as another reviewer pointed out.

#45,380 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

If you are looking to invest in real estate like a professional, then why not learn how professionals - not the scam artists you see on late-night TV infomercials - actually invest in real estate? Better than that, why not learn how to invest WITH them, in their own private real estate funds? In this incredibly insightful book, Sean Cook (a pseudonym from an author who refreshingly isn't pimping his own firm) discusses the entire process of how a serious investor should invest in real estate. The investor who wants to invest alongside experienced pros who also have skin in the game, thus aligning incentives, will not find a better treatise on real estate private equity investing than this. One caveat that I mention up front: although there may be exceptions, my belief is that this book is geared mostly toward "accredited investors" - essentially, though not exactly, those whose annual income exceeds $200,000 ($300,000 with a spouse) or a net worth of $1,000,000 excluding one's primary residence. There are undoubtedly exceptions to this, but most private investment funds, be they real estate private equity (such as this book describes), private equity, private debt, "hedge" funds, etc. will have this requirement. Most of these funds will also have minimum investment limits. I have seen them as low as $25,000 for smaller funds and sometimes as large as $500,000 or $1,000,000 (or more). Some of the new "crowdfunded" deals may be lower. I say this not to discourage potential investors, but note it here so the novice doesn't get the idea that most of these funds operate like a mutual fund or something of that nature! In any case, fund structures are discussed in depth by the author.Caveat aside, if you have the net worth to be interested in a book like this, it will serve you well. This review won't do justice to the comprehensive nature of the book, but as someone with an undergraduate degree and MBA in finance from "Top 5" business schools and someone who has worked in the private equity/private debt industry for almost 15 years, I guarantee that you will learn more about the way real estate private equity is done from this book than you will from any business school class or from any other source, unless you decide to work in the industry yourself for several years. With all that said, Sean Cook covers the entire spectrum of investing in real estate private equity. He smartly starts with a glossary since many, if not most, people will not have heard many of these terms. Even if you have heard them, you may not understand them. And if you don't understand them in the glossary, do not fear: the author will use them in examples and you will come to understand them in short order. The author then discusses how investments are structured as well as real estate product types (retail, industrial, multifamily, raw land, etc.). The next few sections focus on the meat of the investment process: how to evaluate a property. This also includes a lesson for the non-finance folks about capital structure. The author then tackles the issue of evaluating the financial sponsor (the professionals actually making and managing the investments - the persons whom you will be funding). This area is always the most difficult. Good track records are a good place to start but so is the incentive structure (how the sponsor will be compensated, how your investment money will be returned to you, etc.). This is important because a solid compensation structure will minimize the agency problem and ensure that your incentives (investment return, return of capital) are aligned with the financial sponsor who will receive payments in the meantime - before you ever receive a dollar - in the form of management fees. Investment professionals don't work for free! They do have to pay themselves and employees and keep the lights on while the investments play out. The key is to make sure that the fee and compensation arrangements are fair to you, the investor. The author also includes a lot of valuable discussion about investor rights and the different classes of investments and investors. Not all investment dollars are (necessarily) the same and not all investors are (necessarily) treated equally! This is a good - and often underappreciated - discussion. I have seen investments become winners or losers based upon some of these issues, unfortunately. The last third of the book goes through various valuation exercises (comparables, replacement cost, DCF, etc.). While my love for financial modeling doesn't approximate that of the author (I've always been a believer in GIGO - garbage in, garbage out - and that, consequently, many of the assumptions in models are, to quote one of my old bosses, "wild ass guesses"), financial modeling does play an invaluable role in assessing an investment. You wouldn't do an investment solely on the basis of a model (the other areas of due diligence are just as important), but you sure as heck wouldn't do one without a model either! And, fortunately, Sean Cook understands this point as well! Models are unavoidable. You have to have some basis for understanding the numbers. And that's what financial models: they give you a tool for understanding risk and where an investment, at least on paper, is most likely to break down or succeed. Finally, Sean Cook ties it all together: how to formulate your investment strategy, allocate your capital, review offerings, etc. There is some solid investment advice in this section that could be applied to almost any asset class, not just real estate. But given that real estate private equity is Mr. Cook's focus, he follows through on the foundation he has built in the earlier chapters and brings the potential investor down the home stretch to finding the right private real estate deals - and the step-by-step process of "pulling the trigger" as he calls it. He ends with his "Key Takeaways", which, again, would be great advice for almost any private investment class, or even most public ones. The Key Takeaways are nothing earth-shattering, but more solid reminders to the reader not to forget about the big picture. Don't get so bogged down in cap rates and IRRs that you forget some of the basics like not putting all your eggs in one basket (or as the author says, "spread your bets.")This book isn't for everyone. It isn't for the person who sees the "YOU, TOO, CAN FLIP HOUSES AND DOUBLE YOUR MONEY IN 90 DAYS" ad and actually believes it. This book is PERFECT for the serious investor who wants to invest in private real estate deals like a professional by investing WITH the professionals. Sean Cook will show you how to do that. Even if you don't know finance, if you are willing to take your time, read the book, take notes on the main themes, you will be able to source some real estate private equity investments and apply the author's knowledge to every real estate private equity deal you see.

Very practical, easy to read introduction and discussion about vetting commercial real estate syndication deals whether through crowd platforms or direct w/sponsor. I like his conservative approach to underwriting assets, vettings sponsors, analyzing the PPM, waterfall, etc. I wish this book was avail when I started investing in CRE; highly recommend.

I've been a long time RE investor - GP side, but I bought this book to look at deals from a different perspective. I'm looking to step my investment fund sizes and I wanted to see how the educated investor might look at deals. This book has a lot of great advice for investors to consider. I wish investors took more time to read books like this. Educated investors, knowing what they are really getting involved with are much better customers/ LP's.

Like other reviewers that likes this book, I did too. I am a newbie to RECF and private equity real estate investing. I too very much like the conservative advice and definition of the terms someone like me will run into. The chapters on evaluating both the sponsor and the deal will be invaluable to me moving forward. All in all, a great book to get started with from an author who is not selling you anything besides the book, as he says. He seems genuinely interested in helping us.

Great book for the passive investor. Well written and relevant. Will need to revisit it often. I agree with prior reviews and hope in the next update the writer includes a sample of PPMs with his comments. However this is an excellent tool for investors.

Very comprehensive. For the next iteration I hope the author takes a few real PPM's from his company and shows how to interpret and analye.

I found this book both informative and very accessible. In particular I enjoyed the author's ironical and witty attitude to his subject matter. But this is just the icing on the cake - the merits of the contents decided why I gave it a 5 star rating.

It's a quick read. It's a good initial reference. I would highly recommend it to anyone considering private equity investing.
