Wonderful collection of tales espousing enlightenment together with sixteen detailed pen and ink illustrations. Absolutely loved the third tale "The Stone Cutter" with it's circular theme tho I also fancied "Empty Your Cup" for it's short yet potent message. Plenty of more tales to like for the wisdom they impart including "The Returned Gift" and "That May Be" among others so I'm certain you'll find any number of stories to enjoy as I did and reach the end wishing there were more.

My younger cousin and I always enjoy reading stories together and I always try to find some with a deeper meaning to it. This is a great collection of short stories that teach life lessons in such a relaxed, non pressuring way as some other children's books can tend to do. I love how it's broken down, so there were perfect stopping places for us to pick up next time I watch her. We both thoroughly enjoyed this and were able to have some good talks afterward!

Excellent book of Zen tales that should prove instructive to adults, perhaps even more than children who are sure to enjoy them, too. I bought it to use judiciously in my therapy practice.

I enjoyed every second of this book very simple to understand, I like the illustration inside the book. This book is very valuable and hope more series comes out. 5 STARS!

This isn't a review for the book, but for the audible recording. This is the only one of the series by this narrator, and compared to the other books it falls far short. It's all pet peeves - she doesn't pronounce names and words the same. Lay lines become lei lines and takata is tah-kah-tah with all sharp sounds. They also play this ominous music when there's a potential plot twist which is just annoying. Thankfully, the original narrator is back with the next book. For the books themselves - Kim Harrison does an outstanding job with the Hollows series, all in all its very enjoyable.

I have read the whole series, so this isn't particular to this book, but the main character frustrates me in as much as she won't kill anyone (though they deserve it), even though she talks smack (a lot), but when it comes down to it her morals are more important than the people in her life. There are many instances when if she had put the greater good ahead of herself - and she whines in her head that it's all her fault and usually it is - several of the people in her life would be alive. I hated this part of the books. The action, the twists and turns, the unexpected surprises, the relationships, etc. All good! I would rate them a 5. But the main character pissed me off so many times, I wanted to smack her myself. At times she acts like a bully and wonders why people react ugly. At others she doesn't react when she should. Overall I would recommend this series, but wish the author would take this information and use it in her next series.

The plotting of a series involving the same main character usually starts to falter about this time. Not so with the Hollows series. This book is probably the best so far, slightly edging out book 2.The characters continue to develop nicely, the plotting is intricate and interesting and the writing overall is just getting better. Now, there explanations of actions of other books, The issues, events and sometime open plot and character questions left open in other books are seamlessly woven into the story and answered effortlessly here. In other books, I felt that Ms. Harrison sometimes forgot the explanation given in other novels and at times the plotting and explanations in one book conflicted with those of another.I particularly enjoy the fact that there is not a heavy emphasis on romance in this book, which I find boring. In most of these paranormal romances, male characters generally become siphers; their sole existence is protect and moon over the heroine. Once interesting, they become bland, boring and sterile. Ms. Harrison fell into that trap with the unfortunate Kisten. Once interesting, he turned into a male with little life of his own except to support Rachel. Nick also was plunged into that hole, but was redeemed by turning out to be a bit of a rake with his own agenda.There is sexual tension but the whole book doesn't revolve around it. In fact the story could stand alone without itAll in all, fine effort and I am looking forward to the next book. BTW, I did listen to the audible version. Once you get over the shock of hearing a different voice than the chameleon like Margarite Gavin, the audible book was not that bad. I agree , Jenks voice was bit too effeminate and screachy for my taste but the version was listenable. However, I do prefer Ms. Gavin and I am glad that she makes a return as narrator for the rest of the series.

In this book Al has escaped the Ever After because someone is summoning him out. Al is out of blood, Rachel's blood that is, and he is torturing her loved ones just to piss Rachel off. Rachel must team up with Trey to save herself and the ones she cares about and travel into the Ever After. Meanwhile Rachel discovers a shocking secret about her parentage that will have her questioning who she is. Also, Ceri has some shocking news herself and Quin will put himself in mortal peril to help Ceri.As always in a Rachel Morgan book there is a lot going on and Rachel must deal with it all as well as trying to heal from the tragedy that struck her in the previous book. I don't know how Kim Harrison does it but the story never bogs down as Rachel moves from one crisis to another. In this book we get a glimpse into Rachel's childhood and more contact with her mother. I love her mother and my favorite scene is when she is giving Rachel advice on her love life. I liked how all the plot lines come together in the end and Rachel is able to save the day with just the right amount of humor and dramatic flair.As far as the narrator of this book it is the only one that does not have Marguerite Gavin narrating and this narrator is Gigi Bermingham. My only complaint about this book is the narrator I disliked the way she voiced Jenks but it wasn't enough to make me stop the audiobook. When listening to this book just do like I did and keep reminding yourself she only does this book and Ms. Gavin will return for White Witch, Black Curse and it will help you get through Jenks' voice narration. Overall, I really like Outlaw Demon Wails and give this audiobook four solid laser pistols.

Great info. Hoping to put it to use soon on property we have in the high desert where there is currently nothing but cholla catus and greasewood and tumbleweeds. I like the idea of having a functioning food forest in the desert.

Nicely laid out guide to planting in Arizona and similar summer climates. It also talks about companion plants that allow you to ward off pests without chemicals. Sounds pretty awesome if it works. I look forward to planting this spring and see what I get.

I have spent most of my life in the NW and have always had beautiful gardens. I moved to Las Vegas ten years ago and have struggled with what and how to grow anything here. This book is an invaluable addition to my gardening books. My garden this year (first time since we moved to the desert) looks incredible! We have even eaten out of my newest vegetable garden (another first since moving to Las Vegas).

David Owens has written a real winner with this book! He tells us which plants will survive in our harsh desert environment and how to plant and take care of them. The book is easy to follow and I'm having good luck with all the trees and vegetables I have planted using his guidelines.If you thought that gardening was not an option since you moved to the desert you need this book to show you the way!

Another goofy and lovable collection of Sarah's Scribbles. I have to say, just going off the chosen title I had thought there would be a bunch more bits concerning cats. That's okay though cause it's always the regular slice-of-life comics that make me laugh out loud.Near the back there is a section about being an artist and getting criticized online and how this effects an artist's motivation and stuff. I think it's a good message that Sarah has put there about being sensitive to others and if you're an artist to not give up on doing what you love doing. There are just a lot of pages devoted to that.

I absolutely love Sarah Scribbles!!! Besides the whole no kids thing (((I have 2))), her personality mirrors mine almost perfectly. I was so happy when I found out she had another book coming out that I decided to preorder it. I expected to get it in the beginning of April but yay it came on the 30th of March!!! Great book, my favorite section is closer towards the end. Smart artist and I hope to meet her one day.P.s. I love stroking the cover.

Fans of her popular webcomic will be absolutely justified in their ecstatic scramble to get their own copy of this latest collection (speaking as one of said fans, I know that I won't be wasting any time time when this finally hits the shelves).

I follow Sarah's Scribbles on instagram and I love her content. The book was in pristine condition with thick pages and fun comic entries. Since I have to buy a white elephant for the family white elephant, I purchased this book. Knowing my family, I will definitely not have to fight for it. That way I get to keep this gift all for myself! Buhahaha!

I love her books. You should buy and read all of them. They are funny, sweet, and poignant. In "Herding Cats" there is also a section on the toxicity of the anonymous online world and how that can affect young artists. That part alone is a MUST READ for anyone creating art, especially if you have younger kids in your life, nieces, nephews, kids or grand kids, they need to read it.Plus it's a lot of fun.Highly recommend!

Of course ive read the first in the series and this book didnt disappoint! Her comics are so true to most of us if not all and she is so hilarious and funny with her comics! She has light and dark humour and its just fun! Even though its meant to be funny, there are serious issues that she talks about and she shows us that we're not alone, not only in this book, but in her first two book in this series also! She delves but in a humorous way! I love Sarah Anderson and I hope she vomes out with more!

Herding Cats was the third graphic novel Sarah Anderson has released and it was honestly my favorite. I laughed out loud at almost every page and found it to be all too relatable. Her simplistic style is so captivating and I can't help but adore it.This book specifically celebrated what it's like to be an artistic introvert in a world full of deadlines and social environments. I especially appreciated the "Guide for the Young Creative" section at the end. It gave me hope that things will get better, it's normal to feel this way, and that I'm not alone.

I love comics and keep this one with the others in the bathroom. I read in the tub and like for my guests to have something to look at. I like Sarah's take on life in general. The blurb at the end for artists is insightful and reminds me to keep on pushing at my craft. I'll be buying more of her books in the future.

This was technically a re-read for me, but since the first time I read this book was in seventh grade (that's about six years ago) it was like reading it for the first time. The only thing I remembered was that I liked it a lot, and that the satyrs were funny. Neither of those facts changed.Fablehaven is about Kendra and Seth, a brother and sister who go to stay part of the summer with their rather reclusive grandfather (they're grandmother is mysteriously absent). While there they discover that not all is what it seems and that they're grandparents run a place called Fablehaven- a haven for the magical creatures. Very few things there are safe, and Kendra and Seth have a lot to learn if they're ever going to be the caretakers.This is one of those books I think everyone should read. I know it's a middle grade book, but like Harry Potter and Percy Jackson it is just as enjoyable for older readers. For one, it doesn't "talk down" to the readers. It treats everyone like a knowledgable reader and the mystery and plot have enough twists and turns for anyone to enjoy. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It also completely transported me to the world of Fablehaven, and the setting was so pervasive I found myself daydreaming about it in my spare time.A major plus for this book was the two main characters. While Kendra is the protagonist for most of the story, Seth does get a bit of spotlight. They're both super realistic, actually acting their age (she's in eighth grade, he's in sixth) in many ways without being too immature. I will admit that Seth did become a bit annoying, since he causes quite a few problems, but I'm fairly certain this will allow readers to really watch him grow up over the course of the series. The best part about them was their relationship- they acted like real siblings! I cannot count the number of times I've found a sibling relationship to so closely mirror the one I have with my brother. It was so refreshing to see the regular bickering and teasing without making either of them seem like a brat. It also allowed me to connect a ton with Kendra, who's a very likable heroine.So I'd definitely recommend this to everyone. It's perfect for fans of Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, for sure. It's really just one of the best middle grade novels I've read in a while, and I can't wait to read many, many more in this series (which has, thankfully, been completed so I won't have to wait between novels).

Kendra and Seth must spend a week with their grandparents when Mom and Dad are called away unexpectedly. They do not know these grandparents very well and the kids are beyond annoyed that they are being left with them. The house is beautiful and the yard is amazing, but there is something strange about this place. The kids learn that they are spending this week on one of the most important preserves for magical creatures and their grandfather is the caretaker. In the woods beyond the yard live creatures great and small, good and evil. After a series of dangerous events, Kendra and Seth need to take chances on which creatures they can trust to help them while avoiding those that will hurt them.I absolutely love to drift off into a world of young-adult, fantasy fiction from time to time. They are the perfect remedy after a long, drawn-out read. It is hard to find a series that has a good balance of worthwhile writing and youthful creativity. I was directed to Fablehaven awhile back, but had my doubts. Once I finally got started, I flew through the book and was entertained throughout (I did take one exception with the constant and blatant disregard for authority from Seth, but I see it was necessary to move the story along). I am excited about this magical world created by Brandon Mull. I do not like to read any series back-to-back, but I look forward to reading book 2 soon.

Fablehaven is one of my favorite fantasy series and as such I was eager to take a look at this activity book related to the series. The book does not disappoint. The book is full of secret codes, recipes to try out, and your own preserve to create. Readers who enjoy interactive books that inspire imaginative play are bound to enjoy this book. Writing, drawing, coloring, designing, and word games punctuate this fun book. Hours of creative enjoyment are contained in this book. The sheer variety of different activities and games makes this a great book for both individual and group activities. One could even use the book to set up a Fablehaven party to celebrate the series or the upcoming sequel series that comes out in March 2017. If you have a Fablehaven lover in your house, this book is a must.

This book was one of my favorite books. The author is Brandon Mull. If you have ever read any of his other series you will love this one😃!I would have given it a 4 ½ star rating if that was how this was set up. My least favorite part was that the cover looks different than the scene in the book that it comes from.I did say that I liked it though, and I do. It was funny and explains Kendra and Seth’s relationship as sister and brother really well👍. It was fun to find all of the little connections to the Five Kingdoms.I recommend that you read his series in the order of Beyonders, Five Kingdoms, Fablehaven, then Dragonwatch to fully appreciate the connections. Also, after reading Fablehaven(book 1) flip to the back of the last page and scan over it😉. I’d say the funniest thing in the book was when they had to give a cave troll a massage in exchange for information, and I’d better not say what the most exciting part is😏.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mythical creatures, adventures, thrilling tales, mysteries, or, as I already said, other series by Brandon Mull.

This is one of the best books I’ve found on the Permian extinction. The author spends a lot of time on the development of forests from the Devonian on up through the Triassic which is an excellent overview of the evolution of plant life. Once I understood the great forests of the Carboniferous, I had a better grasp of the reasons why the Tunguska traps had such an impact on extinction. I got a good mental picture of the early Triassic because I could compare the plants before and after the extinction.With the (necessary for me) help of Google images and Wikipedia I felt like I finally got the fauna of the Permian straightened out which meant I could better grasp the devastation of species at the end.The book is very clearly written with very helpful charts. I loved the chart at the end which compares the convergence of fauna in the ecosystems past and present. The margins are all full of my notes and I did a ton of underlining. It was hard going because I needed to look so much up, but it was well worth the time because I learned so much, it was truly a wonderful learning experience! I will go back to it over and over.

My only complaint! The cost of this book was 50$. Why don't people buy books? DING DING DING! I'm a 30 year firefighter. I can't afford the book. I bought it anyway! You should too. Must read! It offers the solution to global warming. In the Carboniferous we learn that an atmosphere with high CO2 content gives rise to plants like Lycophite Scale trees to eat it. That's what we need today, a plant family designed to eat more CO2. I feel the answer lies in the bamboo family?

I'm not a paleontologist, but I have a strong interest in paleontology and volunteer at a natural history museum. I even do a tour on mass extinctions, so I consider myself a fairly knowlegeable layman.This book contains way too much information for me, and I suspect most other nonscientists. I couldn't finish it.Try Peter Brannen's "The Ends of the World" for a much more readable discussion of mass extinctions.

This book is not for casual reading (well, unless you're already well-versed in this subject) and you would do yourself a favor to open a notepad in your computer and take notes as you read along. Don't lay in bed or sit in a comfortable couch when you read this: this book is meant to be read with an alert, attentive mind. That said, McGhee is one of those rare science authors that's able to communicate a large amount of information in a simplified manner, while at the same time not diluting it so much that it distorts the actual significance or meaning. His writing is methodical and he guides you through each idea without assuming anything about your knowledge. When he brings up information from a previous chapter, he will mention this and won't assume that you've memorized everything he's written. There are times this book reads like a mystery book, because McGhee always compares and contrasts evidence from various people about why things may have occurred. I am deadly serious when I say that he communicates a large amount of information. The difficulty is not in understanding the book, but in absorbing the vast amount of information. It may look intimidating, but if you read as carefully and methodically as the author presents the evidence, you'll see how McGhee *masterfully* weaves a coherent story and he makes sure that his reader understands. This book has convinced me to read his other books.So what is this book about? It's about the various glaciations that happened in the Late Paleozoic: Late Devonian, End-Devonian, Early Carboniferous, and End-Middle Permian. He talks about the biodiversity and ecological impact of each, possible triggers, evidence in favor of certain triggers and counter-evidence of triggers of glaciations, comparisons to more recent Cenozoic glaciation, he describes how the continents moved and formed, what sort of plants dominated and how they came to be, how the world of the Carboniferous looked and the type of animals that inhabited it, the evolutionary history of plants, the gigantism of Carboniferous animals and why they may have been that way. It's basically a book about the Paleozoic world, with a focus on ice ages and the Carboniferous period. If you're tired of reading about dinosaurs or the world of the Mesozoic, this book is for you. Don't get me wrong, I love dinosaurs as much as anyone, but there were millions of years of interesting things before dinosaurs were a thing and this book shows you just what those things were.If you love paleontology, there is no reason that this book should be absent from your collection. I've read Peter Brannen's "The Ends of the World", I've read Steve Brusatte's "The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs" - all of them fantastic and well-written, but I prefer this humble, seemingly overlooked book.

This book is about a critical period in the history of life on Earth, when tetrapods, arthropods and vascular plants spread across the planet. The author emphasizes the long glaciation and its effect on biological diversity, and also makes comparisons with other cold ages throughout geological history, especially those of the Devonian. Excellent for the study of the evolution of terrestrial biota. Its price is a little high because there is no color and the quality of the printing and type of paper does not justify that price.
