Great book for studying the Bible and a wonderful text book. I disagree with the thought that the Holy Spirit cannot help you interpret scripture, that is found in this book. It says without everything and the way you do their methods of study, then you cannot interpret the Bible correctly. If the Holy Spirit helped them write it, can’t he help us read it?

There is a lot of good stuff here, but my primary gripe is that they deny an important hermeneutical distinction made by Luther, Calvin, and every Reformation Christian that followed in their wake for hundreds of years. What they deny is the proper distinction between Law and Gospel. They also deny that the Law can be divided into ceremonial, civil, and moral categories. This distinction was also held to by all of the Reformers. By denying these crucial distinctions, they are redifining how Protestant Christians read their Bible. The inevitable result will be substantive departures from historic, Reformation Christianity. I think that's dangerous. Where are they, and those following them, going to end up? They're essentially rethinking the Christian faith.The authors are writing from a premillinial-dispensationalist-baptist perspective, so they encourage readers to take the apocalyptic literature of Revelation literally, as much as is absolutely possible. That's interesting, when the authors take all references to baptism and the Lord's supper in the scriptures to be figurative, even when the context is historical narrative (i.e. this is my body, baptism now saves you, etc.).As a general rule, it is a good historical, literary approach to understanding the scriptures. If you are a more traditional Reformed Baptist who holds to Covenental Theology, or if you are more Classically Reformed or Lutheran, then there will be much that you find in this book that is at direct odds with your tradition and your confessional standards. If you are a "New Calvinist" baptist, and a premillenial-dispensationalist, then you'll probably be in essential agreement with the authors, as that is the perspective they are writing from.

The book itself is excellent. If you are purchasing the kindle version in order to listen to the text-to-speech option, be warned that it can be hard to follow. In my opinion, the pausing is messed up. It pauses longer at commas than periods, which is the opposite of how it should be. This makes comprehending the text difficult. Also, reading out the long lists of references is tedious and the reading of the Bible abbreviations can be confusing.

Had to get this for a class and I'm so glad I got it. It has really helped me to be able to read and understand the Bible. I've been in church since I was 3 years old and grew up in it. But was always intimidated to read and study the word of God because I felt I couldn't fully understand it. Now I'm loving studying the Bible any chance I get. I brag about this book all the time to my friends. A must read. It's also helped with the Bible studies we give. Great material and written perfectly for anyone to understand.

I cannot say enough good things about this book. This was one of the required textbooks for a seminary and I found it to be very engaging to read. The book is written so well and really gives the reader some practical strategies in how to read the Bible and how to accurately interpret what you read. It is a great resource for anyone waning to dig deeper and get the most out of your Bible study, This is a book that I will indeed hang onto and use as a resource in the future.

If you have an interest in learning more about God's Word, I believe you'd find tis book helpful. It is broken into concise chapters that aid in understanding how to get the most out of relating the Word as it was written in Biblical times to today's world, using a 5 step process that makes sense. Using this book will help you get more from the Bible, and if you apply what you learn, help to build a closer relationship with Him.

This book was required reading in seminary. I loved this book! I learned what it's means that exegesis is an act of love. I also learned how to apply the Biblical teaching that Scripture never contradicts itself. Don't look at verses outside of context, and don't assume that one verse confirms your understanding. Look at various verses, consider the historical circumstances, and the literary type. When I completed my class at seminary, I sold the book but later regretted not having it and bought another copy to use in my personal Bible study.

Awesome workbook to an awesome book. This isn't really necessary, but it's very helpful for a classroom/discipling environment. The book is great at teaching how to study the bible and equips the students to learn by practicing. The workbook contains all the same exercises as the book, but it's just more convenient than to print out materials or xerox a bunch of pages.

This book was a nice mix of a Clifford story and fun facts about Hanukkah. It is a good way to introduce little ones to different traditions.

My grand-boys (age 4 & 7) enjoyed the story. I liked introducing them to customs of the Jewish faith. We are Christians but, I think it is important for them to know the culture and practices of the Jewish faith, after all, Jesus was Jewish.

sweet for Hanukkah but seems it was written more for non Jews than for Jews. Just felt that way for me. Would be ok for either Jew or gentile but it was so simplified it would have more appeal to a non-Jewish family.

Cute book as most classic Clifford books are. Only issue is that the paper the pages are made out of are very thin and cheap feeling. My son will need to be overly careful not to rip this book. I've never seen a children's book with such poor quality paper. Just odd.

It's a cute book, my daughter loved seeing Clifford celebrate a holiday we celebrate. However, the story of Hanukkah presented in this book is incorrect. The miraculous oil was in the lamp over the arc not in a menorah. Also a hanukiah is lit to celebrate Hanukkah not a menorah. A menorah is any candelabra, it's not specific to Hanukkah

We invested in several Clifford board books for when my gentle toddler was into his paperback stories and my not so gentle toddler was destroying them. This story is very much loved and has taken a lot of abuse. Well made book with a lovely story about one of our favorite dogs!

Great book if you are introducing your child to the idea that not everyone celebrates Christmas. We are Jewish so it wasn’t really for us, but we did give it another child.

Our child had a Clifford Birthday Party and we used this so everyone could sign it and leave messages for her that she could read one day. I wish it was hard back but it was okay.

We usually love the Clifford books, but this one less so... I don’t like that his friends don’t come to his party because they aren’t proud of the gifts they got for him.

What I've been buying every year for I don't know how many years!

The best for keeping track of the aspects! New and Full moon!

This calendar is always stunning and accurate. This is the 5th year I've purchased this calendar and don't plan on stopping with my yearly tradition. My fiance and I enjoy reading the calendar a few times a month to see if the bad.and good days match the calendar.

I order one of these Astrology calendars every year and I really like them a lot. They have a lot of good information about Astrology too. Nice space to write in daily and nice pictures too. Very happy with this calendar.

I got this to give to a friend for a Christmas present. I gave it to her back in September. She has MS and I just wanted to make sure she received it because we live where weather can get pretty bad in the winters. She loved it. The pictures are beautiful and it has horoscopes for each month for all the zodiac signs - not just that month. I was pleased that she loved it so much.

I buy the Llewellyn calendar for my mother every year for Christmas and she loves it. The artwork is beautiful and true to each sign. Every year the pictures are so different. The horoscopes every month are very detailed, and provide alot of insight.

I just love these calendars! I have been getting them for years. It is annoying that the astrology is always on Eastern Standard Time, but oh well, it's still a great work of art and contains a lot of information! I keep it at work so I can look at it often. My work colleagues enjoy reading their horoscopes and asking me questions about astrology.

What's crazy about this calendar is the images almost seem like they are characters drawn by an animator until you look closely at their faces. You can see the imperfections and realize they are made to resemble real people. Perfectly imperfect individuals wielding this amazing power. It's a beautiful calendar very inclusive and has a huge resource in the back for how to use and why you should use the icons listed. First one of these and probably won't be my last.

It has all the original illustrations and is the size of a normal book so the print is large enough to read. That's important as it's 531 pages. After watching a PBS documentary on this book late one night, I checked the smaller paperback size version out of the local library. Half the size of this one and few pictures. After 70 pages I realized I wanted the original version with all the illustrations and normal size print and this book is it! Good printing, clear illustrations and I'm happy! I'm retired but this is the version I would buy for grandkids. It's a funny book!

These observations are only about the Seawolf Press paperback edition of this book. Up till now I’ve been very apprehensive to print on demand books, but this is an absolutely spectacular production. All of the illustrations are very detailed and meaningful. The cover is beautiful and a thick matte paper. The overall construction of this book is amazing. I started buying the Seawolf Press editions of the Jack London tiles last month. I bought about 20 of them. I’m probably going to buy several more. But then I thought I should maybe grab a couple of the other classics that are done by Seawolf while I can. These are even nicer than the Penguin Classics Deluxe Editions. I wish they had the folded French covers, but they have every other accoutrement you could want in a paperback. This will almost certainly be the best edition available on the market in paperback today for any title they have.These are almost too nice to read!

An excellent read on Mr. Twain's travels to the Old Country.Having been to some of the places he writes on in the book, his exposure remains "right on".As with Twain's long reads, he finally wears you out about to the end.

My reading: this is a book about extraordinary people that all Griffin books bring to light.It follows the life of The Honorable Ivor Goldsmid Samuel Montagu, the third son of the 2nd Baron Swaythling, one of the richest man in England. He is the only British aristocrat to receive the Lenin Prize (the communist equivalent to Nobel Prize) for Peace. He created the game of Table Tennis, which he leveraged in communist China, and he was an agent for the Soviet secret service called GRU.Marcel Proust wrote "the people from bygone ages seem infinitely remote from us. We look at them as animals in a zoo."We can see a photograph of Ivor Montagu. He looks remote, other worldly as if he was a character in the Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris coming back from the 1920s every day at midnight. A British movie web site describes Ivor as a "producer, writer and director. Communist, aristocrat, son of the banker Lord Swaythling, the Hon. Ivor Montagu was a leading fixture in left-wing film activity in the 1930s."In Griffin's book, Ivor Montagu comes out of the metaphoric Proustian zoo of the past. Ivor brother, Ewen, was "a rugby player obsessed with breeding cows... good at pretty everything." But Ivor himself "had the desire, but not the talent to be involved." There was only one game he could play, table tennis. Ping Pong was a Cinderella of the sports blossoming around 1904 in Britain. Quoting Griffin:"Ninety years ago, Montagu revived a sport that really did fit the best and worst of Communism. It was suited for airless, cramped factories, it was humanistic and competitive, it kept the brain engaged and exercised as much as the body. Table tennis became, as Montagu wrote, "a weapon for peace."He married Eileen Hellstern. "She was known to all as Hell. From his parents' perspective, Montagu couldn't have made a worse choice. Hell was a divorced mother of one, the daughter of a maker of surgical shoes. Her mother had been institutionalized shortly after her father's death."For Ivor's father, Lord Swaythling, Montagu's marriage was "an irredeemable calamity.". He changed his will, and the Queen send a note to Ivor's mother: "Gladys I feel for you. May."The newlyweds "made the front pages of all the London papers. "BARON'S SON WEDS SECRETARY," roared London's Evening Standard. For a week, they were on the run from the press, using makeup and a wardrobe department borrowed from Montagu's film contacts."As many times before and after Ivor Montagu marriage, both parents and society proved to be wrong. Their marriage lasted a lifetime. Ivor and Hell died within two week from each other fifty years later.Ivor was a member of the British Communist party and an agent of the Comintern. Shielded by his privileged status, he could afford to be a spy.In any other country in the world, including US - particularly during McCarthy era - Ivor would have been persecuted. But not in Britain. Ivor was not a criminal.Leon Trotsky, one of the fathers of the revolution and founder of the Red Army, had faced off against Stalin for control of Soviet Russia and lost. "Trotsky was protected twenty-four hours a day in exile by Turkish police officers.Trotsky lived in constant fear of assassination by Stalin, yet Ivor Montagu, a secret Stalinist at the beck and call of the Kremlin, was staying in his house. Trotsky ended their late evening by passing Montagu a loaded revolver and telling him to put it under his pillow. Montagu was many things, but not a killer. He barely slept, "terrified that the gun would go off."Trotsky fear was real. He will be assassinated with an ice pick in Mexico a few years later. The Chinese ping-pong team was brutally destroyed during the Cultural revolution, a few years earlier.".. the rumor circulated that the Chinese men's team, which had total dominance in the sport, had been paraded in front of tens of thousands of Chairman Mao's Red Guards. They had been screamed at, spat at, locked up, and tortured. They had been shot as spies. They had been strung up on trees by a vast teenage mob. As their dead bodies twirled back and forth at the ends of ropes, the cadavers came to rest with their bulbous eyes turned toward Taiwan or Hong Kong--a sure sign that they weren't faithful followers of Chairman Mao but traitors to Chinese Communism. This was an eminently engaging and fun read about the confluence of ping pong and world diplomacy mixed with a bit of cold war spying. In "Ping Pong Diplomacy", Griffin peels back the proverbial onion to provide deeper historical context behind the rise of ping pong across the world, driven by an enterprising and wealthy upper class Brit, Ivor Montagu, and in particular in China. As the Chinese communists embrace the sport and see sport through the lens of politics, it ultimately plays a pivotal part in restoring diplomatic relations between US and China through Nixon's historic visit 1972. While the writing could be a little uneven at times, this was an interesting read with great context on the intersection of table tennis, politics and East meets West.

Ping Pong Diplomacy was a very interesting read. All I knew about the term beforehand was that something happened with Ping Pong a few years before I was born and then Nixon went to China and soon China will own the US. Surprisingly, the history of modern Ping Pong is far more interesting than I would have thought. And this book gives an excellent incredibly succinct recap of 20th century Chinese history. However, I found that it got a little too ambitious in the last section - too many names, not enough of the gripping details that made up the first three-quarters of the book. Still, a good pop-history read.

This book was a very entertaining, enlightening read about what might seem to be a very small part of history.Rather than be a book simply on the exchange of Ping Pong players between China and the US in the early 1970s, Nicholas Griffin paints a fascinating picture of the background to Ping Pong in the PRC.This picture takes the reader on an entertaining journey through both World Wars, the cold war, and around the world during a fascinating time in history. The journey is well written by the author, and I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in modern history, Chinese history, or a great non fiction read.

This is an excellent book. As a former reporter in China, I am really impressed with how the writer obtained interviews with many of the Chinese involved in the epochal ping-pong diplomacy with the US and weaved their stories into what is truly a riveting read. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for an out-of-the-ordinary way into a deeper understanding of the ties that bind America and China together. And what's not to like about hippies in purple tie-dyed bell bottoms hanging out with Zhou Enlai?

There's a lot of international politics in this story--it happened during my lifetime, and I still had trouble following all the Chinese characters. But the main story about how ping pong (table tennis) influenced world events is really fascinating. You get a whole different perspective on how different cultures think and how major issues result from what seem to be minor factors. It's worth spending the time to read it. Recommended.

What a surprisingly good book. Hard to believe that such a seemingly minor sport could have such a huge influence. There is a lot of serious history in the book. Very well written.

I was an executive at Intel from 1984-1999 (Corp. Vice President) and had the honor of knowing Noyce, Moore and Grove. I found the book odd. It was very superficial about so many things and then would go in depth on other things. The section on Andy's early life was overly detailed while there was not enough about Gordon. Frankly, the book feels lazy to me. It felt like Malone just wrote up thing he could easily find. He was suppose to have access to Intel's archives for whatever that is worth. We were thought not to keep much because of legal issues. There were also a number of factual errors.I did benefit from learning more about the early years at Fairchild.Hated the title by the way. It is worth reading this book as long as you realize that it is just a piece of the story of these three amazing men and even less a history of Intel.

The amount of real underlying information about Intel in this book is around what one can find in Wikipedia.I specially disliked the annoying overburden of adjectives (most, best, greatest, .... constantly repeated), half the book's pages are straight adulation (and the same, again and again), it becomes frustrating to read, seems the author was paid only on the adulating phrases.The narration goes back and forth in time, so that you find a chapter talking about 1997, and then next back in 1990, confusing the reader on the dates, devices, and company situation.The author goes to great lengths in praising how good were the three men in solving all the problems... followed by a tiny explanation on the problems themselves and the great breakthroughs that intel did actually make (raising yield, fab management, ...). It goes on and on enumerating the work-force increases: without saying what were they doing, etc.There is quite an introduction of the two Intel co-founders, but that's it, because then the book jumps to full flattery towards Grove for 80% of its pages, it could as well have been called "the intel unity", since anyways there are very few pages at the end dedicated to the period after he retired from CEO.I am very disappointed by this book, I didn't enjoy reading it, I didn't obtain new or valuable information on Intel's history or insights regarding semiconductors' history.

For anyone interested in the recent decades' history of materials chemistry and what led to the microminiaturized world we are still entering, I would highly recommend this book. I would especially recommend to anyone that they read Jon Gertner's "The Idea Factory" about Bell Labs first, and then follow that reading up with the study of this book. Here is why. "The Idea Factory" covers the decades of the 1920's through the 1960's and thus thoroughly and thoughtfully covers the creation of the transistor in 1947-48. One of the physicists involved in that invention was Bill Shockley, who left Bell Labs around 1953 to found his own company. The company he located where he grew up, south of San Francisco, thus planting the seed for what we now call Silicon Valley. Two of Shockley's first hires were Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore. When they became fed up with Shockley's behavior, they left and formed the company that soon became Intel. So, in reading the two books back to back, one gets an astonishing insight into the people and the organizations that led us from Marconi's wireless to the eve of 5G cell phone technology. Truly a stunning saga.

This is not the best book about Silicon Valley that Mike Malone has written. It is, however, a great read -- which is what you want from a good book! There have been criticisms in this column that the book is "Grove heavy" and "Moore light". That's certainly true.However, the context is that Gordon Moore was the Spirit -- ethereal and above it all...the giver of the Law.I enjoyed this book very much... Having lived through most of the story but watching from afar from my desk at HP, I was keenly interested in the subject matter. It's not a book really about Intel the company as it is a book about the 3 fallible human beings who went on to greatness -- each in their own way: Noyce the entrepreneur and ultimate gambler; Moore the calm and rational scientist; and Grove the 'first employee' who sublimated his (often violent) passions (and loathing for Noyce) to finally become probably the greatest businessman of our time (Donald Trump could only wish...).This is a book about 3 extraordinary individuals and their relationships with each other with the semiconductor revolution as a backdrop. I appreciated that Malone didn't give short shrift to the importance of some of the other notable "Fairchildren" who were equally as important to the development of Silicon Valley -- most notably Charlie Sporck at National Semiconductor.Since it's a book about relationships and not about facts and figures, there are not a lot of details about product lines, income statements, sales etc. except to provide historical context for the narrative. If you are at all interested in the history of technology, this book is a must read.As with "Bill and Dave", these stories need to be preserved...
