About the photographer: Frederic Chaubin was born in Phnom Penh in 1959. For the last fifteen years, he has been editor-in-chief of the French lifestyle magazine Citizen K. I like to collect books about architecture - and especially those on Brutalist architecture. Many building of that design were built in the Soviet Union. Brutalist architecture is a style of architecture that was popular from the 1950s to the 70s - usually constructed out of huge amounts of concrete and steel. The J. Edgar Hoover FBI building in Washington is an example of the style - a bit conservative compared to the designs of the buildings in this book.This book is one that I've lusted for over the years and wanted for my collection. I finally broke down and purchased it last year. And it is worth every penny I spent. The book is filled with incredible photographs of beautiful buildings. I would recommend it to anyone interested in this style of architecture. As the old saying goes - they don't make them [buildings] like that anymore.This is a huge book,10.5"x13.5"x1.25" thick. Hardback but with no dust jacket, instead the cover is colored printed. It was published by Taschen. The book is broken down into five chapters:1. Entertainment and Culture - Variations on Monumental Lyricism2. Science and Technology - Power and the Dramatization of the Future3. Sports and Youth - The Architect's cosmic Dream4. Wow, what happens when civilizations rise and fall ?Read all about it in this amazingly well written book with huge photographs of the lost empire.It will haunt you and make you wonder: will someone write a book like this for the United States of America some day ?The images are perfect, the stories detailed and well researched, and very emotional.The most touching story was of a cutting edge science center built right before the fall of the USSR. A huge campus with dreams of conducting advanced research: but now abandoned and empty. I would hope investors would buy this book and scout out these areas of empty real estate. There is a fortune to be earned by purchasing these lost properties and rennovating them for modern use. Investors shoild try to save the history, but some areas are so large - they may need split up into businesses, apartment buildings, and shopping centers.If you love architecture, or love history, or just enjoy photography and grwat story telling - Buy This Book !

On each page, you receive what you pay for: large photographs that are well composed with a decent amount of supporting text. (Every page is almost completely covered in images) As an architecture student, I often referred to this book for some base point ideas for designs or circulation or program elements during studio and it really did aid my design style to see so many different pieces of architecture (the book is far from one note regarding architecture, even though it does have a brutalist-modernist focus). I believe this book to be a good volume for any architect's private collection.

Being a native of the USSR , I wondered what is this book about - not professionally , but rather because of nostalgia and interesting titles. The book met my expectations, it is very interesting to look at all these photos - there are pictures of Soviet architectural buildings of different periods and styles, scattered in different countries , which previously formed part of the Soviet Union. Some of the buildings are abandoned and have sad and depressing view - and it reminds us that this era is gone forever . And of course , it is interesting to see those buildings that I have seen "live" . When you read the title of the book - you realize that many of the buildings have quite futuristic look. There is no too much text in this book however the pictures speak for themselves . I recommend the book.

This is a great coffee table book full of the wonderful architectural oddities of the soviet era. This book is practically all photos, I feel anyone could really enjoy this as a gift granted they have the slightest interest in architecture, art, design, photography, or the soviet era.

I really like the aesthetics of the architecture displayed in the book. The book is full color with large detailed pictures. The photos showed off the great buildings in the Soviet Union. I'm no expert but it was worth the $40 bucks I paid. The photos in the preview don't do the book justice as the photos in the preview were not near the best in my opinion. The book is thick and the pages glossy. The whole book is a work of art that encapsulates the soviet era.

About half the images in the book are a little lacking in quality/detail, as if the majority of this project wasn't shot in large format film, which is almost a requirement for the subject matter and a book this size. But except for that, I expect a majority of people will be very entertained in the crazy and incredible architecture that is portrayed in the book. Overall really cool.

This is the most unique book - great gift for artists in your life, or anyone fascinated with Soviet era history. The combination of fabulous architecture and the air of decay of many of the buildings captures the time period better than any other medium I've seen. Peek behind the Iron Curtain - you won't regret it.

About the Author

A member of the Society for Women Artists (SWA), international watercolourist Jean Haines is well-known for her love of her chosen medium. Having lived and travelled in many countries, this popular artist has had the opportunity to develop her skills whilst under the influence of masters from many countries, including Asia, the Middle East and Europe. She studied brush control while living in China and this had the greatest impact on her style. Later, when working with artists from India and Pakistan, she became inspired by the vibrant colours they used. The combination of East meets West in Jeans style is to be enjoyed. The magical free flow of water and colour straight on to a blank working surface (with no initial drawing) creates amazing results, often leaving her audience breathless with delight. Her paintings can be found in homes all over the world and in 2009 she won the Anthony J Lester Award during the SWA Annual Exhibition, where her work was likened to Joseph Crawhalls of the famous Glasgow Boys group of artists. She regularly writes for art magazines and exhibits in a number of galleries. Her hugely successful workshops are held regularly in the UK, and in 2014 she visited Australia for a Book Signing and Workshop Tour. In 2015 she will be visiting California, New York and St Louis in the USA to hold workshops and launch her new book 'Jean Haines' Watercolour World'. Jean lives in Crookham Village, Hampshire.

Beautiful book, but I wish I had bought it in print instead of Kindle. The format is not great on Kindle. This is one of the few Kindle books that I have purchased out of many art books, that I have had this trouble with.

Beautiful watercolors. Too much personal info, as in a autobiography, instead or techniques, how to.... etc.

I LOVE this book. It is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to "let go" and learn how to be free with watercolor. I have MANYwatercolor books...this is my favorite.

I read the reviews saying that the eBook was formatted strangely, but underestimated just how strange. Every page except for the cover is sideways and narrowed, making the eBook unreadable-- even changing the orientation of the device doesn't help, and seems to make it worse. I uploaded two screenshots here of what the book looks like at portrait orientation and landscape for a comparison.I called customer service, who shared the screen on my Kindle and confirmed that the book isn't formatted correctly. For this price (for a download!) it should be. Customer service is alerting the publisher, who should fix it in a few business days (maybe, but if they actually cared they'd have checked the format before offering it for sale), but I accepted a refund and returned the purchase.For now, buyer beware. Rating for the publisher- zero stars. Rating for the customer service representative- all of the stars, she was great.

Jean's third book "World of Watercolor" is even more inspiring than the others. She not only shares her technique and unique perspective, she fills the reader with her infectious passion for watercolor painting. There are tips and tricks galore for the novice and the accomplished artist alike. A must have!

I love Jean Haines' work, but i bought this book as a digit download. As a download, the book is unreadable. I wish I would have bought the paperback edition. I have bought other books Jean has written in paperback, and they are excellent. I am so disappointed that this book was sold in an unreadable format when Amazon knew that the book was formatted incorrectly.

I love Ms. Haines' work, and this book takes you further into her mind as she paints various subjects. I was very happy to add this to my collection. It takes you through everything from selection of paint and tools through realizing your vision in paint. It won't make you another Jean Haines, but I'm certain it will add to any reader's repertoire of techniques.

This exquisite book has inspired me to take up watercolor again. I've always preferred impressionistic paintings to realism so I was drawn to Jean Haines' style immensely. She seems to be a lovely person who is so generous about sharing her tips. That is so helpful!! Much as I love my Kindle, I would not have even considered downloading a beautiful book like this onto it. It is important to see the gorgeous paintings in book form. I'm thinking of ordering more of her books as well as her DVD.I'm so pleased that I discovered Jean Haines!

A really amazing, high quality and minimal book for any modern homes coffee table or book shelves. It's so hefty it's like an art piece. Aside from having such high quality prints, the book itself is just a show stopper in my opinion.

The outside of the book is beautiful! I was shocked when I opened the book. I was very disappointed. The first page that I opened to was a photo of a women showing her pubic hair shaved into the letter G. I thought no big deal, I will just rip the one page out. Let’s just say that wasn’t the only inappropriate photo. That is not fashion! Yes I am talking about the Tom Ford coffee table book. I wish someone had posted a review like this before I made my purchase. If I would have seen it, I never would have bought it.

Finally decided to buy this book after I bought all the other major fashion house coffee table books. It is certainly a staple to add your collection.

Love love this book! Looks amazing especially the outer hard cover which feels almost like fabric, so beautifully made.

Well...it took me long enough, this is a book I've been after for years, I love Coffee Table books and have about 50 and this was missing from my collection. If you love Art and Fashion then this is the book for you. It follows Super Sexy Tom Ford up through his rise at Gucci and what a rise it was. He put Gucci back on the Map where it belonged, this book captures a lot of his great work and what a story he has to tell, it's not just pictures but a great interview as well. At the end of the day for any collector this is a must have, make your friends eyes turn GREEN with Envy as they ooo and ahhh over this great piece of Art. I'm not going to sit here and tell you bit by bit about this book but what I will tell you is I'm about 1/3 of the way finished and I can wait until I finish...it's a good SOLID HEAVY WELL put together BOOK and I LOVE the fact that it has a slip cover to help keep the book safe I wish all high end books came with one...GREAT JOB TOM FORD!!! I can't wait until he makes a book about his solo career and spends his time on men's fashion.....RR

The price for this book is so much more reasonable than I thought it was going to be. It is also an amazon choice which made me feel confident in purchasing. The reviews were also really great and I can gladly say myself that this book is worth buying. the artwork inside is elegant and beautiful. The Tom Ford print on the outside is bold, yet modern which makes this the perfect coffee table book. Highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to add an accessory to your home or table.

This book is exactly how I pictured it. It looks luxurious and the photos are magnificent. I have wanted this book for over two years and I received it as a birthday gift and I'm loving it.

I like that my book arrived on time however, there was a purplish colored wax inside the box and the book had a thick layer of Vaseline like wax all over the cover. The wax is also on the outer portion of the pages on the bottom of the book. I was able to wipe it off however, the book is very slippery and I’ll have to clean it again. The inside of the book is fine however, the wax on the out portion and cover is disgusting and messy.

Definitely not a big fan of accounting, but this book is incredibly well organized and well written that I don't even mind it. There was a lot of thought put into how to make the material digestible and easy to navigate. For a topic I really do NOT enjoy, I'm surprised at how much I like the textbook.

It's a comprehensive accounting book made simple for a first-time learner like me. The videos for standalone course are very useful.

Good book

This book is assigned for a foundational M.B.A. class. It's layout is unnecessarily difficult and confusing. There are multiple chapter, excuse me, module sub-headings; weird uses of bold fonts; missing bold fonts for important vocabulary; and competing mini-problems; mini-exercises; questions; guidance answers; problems; applications; and appendices at the end of each module (chapter). Uuuugh!!

This textbook has been horrendous to use for and MBA accounting class. The book simply doesn’t teach anything. It is structured around definitions and wordy descriptions, but it never shows you the steps to complete anything in real world applications. Do not waste your money on this book if you don’t have to.

Wanna be confused ? Things are getting simplified , here we are as MBA student getting confused with this book. I am so annoyed with the layout of this book.

People are starting to see the internet as a failed utopia - but the story Yasha tells as he draws a history of the internet is that there was never a utopia.Those who want to dismiss the book will sneer that everyone knows the military history of the internet - in the same way that everyone knows that Tor is funded by the US military establishment, and that this is somehow irrelevant.But if you read the book you will find a well researched counter narrative - a third version of story most people don't know - the thinking within DARPA that was about counter insurgency, asymmetrical war, and surveillance.Previously untold stories, like the privatization of the internet (that warrant multiple volumes of discussion in their own right) form the better part of a chapter mid way through this book - a critical narrative when you consider that wealthy internet moguls are our modern day railroad barons, and their success is based largely on public investment.Anyone who has a developed understanding of imperialism, and the US as a modern imperialist power, will find the chapters on Tor and the crypto movement particularly entertaining - cyber libertarians who rail against the state, while cashing state department checks and thinking they are smart ones, meanwhile being used as a part of a soft power regime change strategy.

As I read Mr. Levine's book, it was hard not to be reminded of the scene in the movie "Casablanca" where Louis (the Prefect) goes into the back room at Rick's and declares, "I am shocked! Shocked to find gambling here!" and is then handed his winnings by a casino employee.As a person who has worked deeply with the Internet for almost 25 years, I thought this book would provide some interesting information on the beginning and early times of the Internet, well before my time. Honestly, it falls well short of that: most of what he writes is hardly "secret". In fact, it's a compendium of the various ways governments and (apparently very disturbing to Mr. Levine) businesses use the Internet to collect data; and sometimes (often?) misuse that data.It's hard not to like this book, up to a point. Mr. Levine writes well. The problem is that he digresses from the subject at hand more often than Wayne Campbell in Wayne's World. As importantly, I may have enjoyed the book more had Mr. Levine chosen to be a bit less (honestly, a lot less) obviously biased toward liberal politics in both his reporting and his conclusions. The line between fact and opinion is often blurry.I would only recommend this book to readers little or no previous knowledge about the Internet and its workings -- I believe more advanced readers will come away somewhat disappointed, as I did; though I do have to say that some of the many capsule biographies of the players made for somewhat interesting light reading.

It's well known that the Internet was birthed by the Pentagon. Originally called the ARPANET, the name reflected its origin in the military's Advanced Research Projects Agency created late in the Eisenhower Administration. What is much less well known is that its principal purpose was not to serve as a communications network that could survive a nuclear attack (although that's routinely stated as the reason for developing it). In reality, the ARPANET was an offshoot of the US counterinsurgency program in Vietnam in the 1960s. And its central purpose was to facilitate that program and enable domestic surveillance efforts undertaken by the US Army and the CIA during the Vietnam War. These are among the shocking revelations that investigative journalist Yasha Levine brings to light in Surveillance Valley: The Secret Military History of the Internet. As Levine notes, "the Internet was hardwired to be a surveillance tool from the start . . . [It] was developed as a weapon and remains a weapon today."Over the years, I've read a great deal about the history of the Internet, the computer industry, and the agency now called DARPA (for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). I consider myself reasonably well-informed for someone who isn't directly involved in the industry. Yet I often found my eyes widening in surprise as I read Levine's remarkable story:I was disappointed to learn from Levine's book how deeply involved in military research were virtually all the legendary figures credited with key advances in the evolution of the computer industry and the Internet—and how robust the industry's links to the Pentagon remain to this day. Douglas Engelbart, for example, the man who created the computer mouse, was working on an ARPA contract. So were Robert Kahn and Vint Cerf, the men who developed the vital TCP/IP protocol that makes the Internet work. Even Stewart Brand, an early evangelist for the computer industry, who made it all seem hip and cool, had lived on the military's dime in the 1960s. All these men were, in fact, working either for ARPA itself or for the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI), which was heavily funded by the US military."For many Internet companies, including Google and Facebook, surveillance is the business model. It is the base on which their corporate and economic power rests." These statements should be obvious, since we all know that these firms vacuum up information indiscriminately, but Edward Snowden's revelations have fastened our attention on the NSA. In fact, the NSA couldn't operate as it does without the help of Google, Facebook, and their peers.I was shocked to discover that the online network Tor was created and funded by the US intelligence community. Tor, part of the dark web, is used by drug traffickers, arms dealers, and purveyors of child pornography to escape detection by law enforcement. Admittedly, some of these criminals have been rounded up as a result, but thousands of others continue to operate with impunity on Tor.Secret military history: echoes of the HolocaustIn the Epilogue to Surveillance Valley, Levine reports on a trip to the former Nazi death camp at Mauthausen in Austria. He explains that the meticulous record-keeping for which Hitler's regime was notorious was made possible by using IBM machines. "Nazi Germany employed the same technology to systematically carry out the Holocaust" as the US government and the Internet giants are using today. "Mauthausen is a powerful reminder of how computer technology can't be separated from the culture in which is it developed and used." Given the current state of American society, and the country's leadership in Washington, this point is sobering indeed.This book has been treated unevenly by reviewers. Publisher's Weekly panned it. Kirkus Review was somewhat kinder, terming it "a sometimes-overwrought but provocative history of the internet-equipped security state." The New Yorker was far happier with the effort: Levine's "tone is often contentious, but, amid increasing dismay about technology’s influence on contemporary life, such forceful questioning is salutary." To that I say, Amen.Yasha Levine is a Russian-American investigative journalist who was born in the Soviet Union. Surveillance Valley is based on "three years of investigative work, interviews, travel across two continents, and countless hours of correlating and researching historical and declassified records." It shows.

Levine's message is spot on: high technology is not going to save us from Big Brother, the nightmare of surveillance and control that Orwell warned us against. No, in the end, we will have to save ourselves. But first we must WAKE UP! Today, the huge telecoms, Google, Facebook, Amazon, even Apple, are a part of the problem. All of them are highly integrated with CIA and NSA and threaten our freedom. The problem is not somewhere else, not over there, not with Russia or China, it's right here. It has been all along, as Levine shows in his fine book. The Internet was always about counterinsurgency, surveillance and control.If I could, I'd give Levine's book six stars. It's the most important book I've read in awhile.

I actually enjoyed this story more than I thought I would. There were a number of twists I did not foresee.... like the ending. I will admit that left me feeling a little 'what the heck?!?' as the story just seemed to randomly change direction in the last chapter! I do feel that the ending let things down a little, but not a bad effort overall.

Astrid Bailey is in high school and getting perfect grades, studying and being a proper student are all her top priorities. Her parents work all the time and rarely see Astrid and her twin brother Connor. Connor doesn't care much about anything but football. Astrid is assumed to be strange and a drama queen but basically she's just a book nerd who keeps to herself.Astrid does have a few friends but can't always trust them. Her world turns upside down when she meets her bad boy neighbor Kai Asher.The story is your typical nerdy girl meets hot bad boy. Kai does give Astrid a little more confidence then what she's had in the past. The things Astrid goes through at the hands of her friends, her own twin and several students at school is heart breaking, it's no wonder she feels she doesn't belong. Seems everyone but her parents have betrayed her.The only thing I didn't like about the story is the ending. Is there a second book? Will we ever know what becomes of Astrid and what about Kai? Did he ever have true feelings for Astrid?

So much buildup that led to absolutely nothing. Every high school cliché ever put into a movie from the invention of television on was crammed into this book. It was a long road to nowhere with no real resolution. In the end she just whined to her mother then hopped on a plane, the end. I honestly wish I could give it less than one star but that's the lowest I'm allowed to rate it.

I really wanted to like this book. But it was just all over the place. First she is a loner but has a lot of close friends. Also the spelling was bad, and some of the wording had me rolling my eyes. But I did finish it. It could have been a great book with the plot.

I really wanted to like this book, but sadly, there were way too many things wrong with it. Although the editing wasn't bad, it wasn't great either. The book was written like a seventeen year old was writing in her diary, and it wasn't far from the mark. I'd say twelve was a better age. There were countless contradictions, which was super confusing at best. Scenes were incomplete and the interaction between characters were unrealistic. I found myself rolling my eyes several times and setting the book down, but then I'd pick it back up again hoping things would get better. Sadly, that didn't happen. And it was left in a cliffhanger. Obviously, I won't be buying the next book. The two stars were only for the time and effort the author put into this book. Sorry

I like the book by the end leaves you hanging. The book was published in 2016 and so far no 2nd book. Don't read it because you will be missed, unless the author disappeared from this world there is no explanation to why let your readers hanging there. I tried to email to know if there would be a second book, usually every writer responds....not this one.

Read the original version on Wattpad.. One of the best books I have read. Desirae really knows how to portray her characters in anything she writes. Makes you feel like you're there or seeing it across the giant movie screen. Seems to understand how someone can be treated the way Astrid is, like it could have happened to her or someone she knows.
