I came across this book on some blog recently and wanted to purchase it. Our family is about to move onto a farm and I thought it would be a good book to help us learn about all the things we don't know yet. The illustrations and short but detailed descriptions are wonderful. My 10 yr old son and 11 yr old daughter have enjoyed this as much as me. Even my husband likes it. It's quickly become a resource book in our home. A favorite and one I know will be enjoyed for years to come.

This is a fantastic book. We are farmers and are very impressed with the content. Farm books tend to be typically annoying to us. You know...steers are labeled as cows and tractors with loader buckets are labeled as diggers. Well, not this book. The author did an amazing job of keeping this book accurate. My 8 year old loves it. It covers a wide variety of ag related topics and does so in an easy to comprehend and entertaining manner. I plan to purchase more copies of this book for gifts. I also bought 2 more books by this author due to my satisfaction with this edition.

I saw this book reviewed on a blog and instantly fell in love with the "comb styles" page featured. So I wanted to take a better look at the book to see if it was something that could be gifted this coming holiday season and was not disappointed. The illustrations were well done and the whole book was full of color. The biggest surprise was how my autistic 5-year-old son LOVED it! We laid in bed for an hour talking about the different parts of a farm, the plants and the animals. We did some counting, explored how a plant has roots and where chicken nuggets come from. I don't have coffee table books but this might make its way there to be enjoyed by the whole family.

We bought her other book Nature Anatomy Book first and fell in love. Naturally this purchase was coming. My children love anything that has to do with the outdoors and my youngest loves farm! THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! Just like the other one it is full of beautiful illustrations on every single page. There are notes on everything! Knowing it was going to be as good as the last I did not buy this for the information. These books stay on my bookshelf because they are so wonderful but my kids ask for them regularly. My youngest is three and he will look at it for much longer than any other book that will hold his attention. I will sit and look at all the details in her drawings for fun. Don't get me wrong the information is great as well, everything page is full of information that explains the basics of farm life and even things I did not know whatsoever. Granted I never lived on a farm. You cannot go wrong with this book

We love it!

Awesome book. We got this for my 3 yo son for Christmas, in addition to a toy barn and farm animals. This book's illustrations are great! I am sure I'm going to enjoy this book more than him but it will be nice to teach him about things as well. Beautifully laid out and a nice book to just sit and enjoy looking through. Definitely recommend. I don't generally leave too many reviews but felt compelled with this one. Will have to check out the author's other works.

I LOVE THIS!! Bought it for a friend who wants to own a farm and oh my goodness is it a cute gift. It has great drawings and recipes and it's still a legitimate educational manual just way cuter. Really amazing gift if you have gardners/farmers in your life.

When children are wanting so badly to learn about farm life and animals and actually ask you to read this book to them every day, why would one refuse? It was filled with information and various farm landscapes, barn types, weather vanes, types of animals on farms from sheep to chickens to rabbits, various flowers you might find on a farm, things like insects you might find there, and so many other things. My sons loved it. I did not like this as much as Nature Anatomy though.

Julia Rothman had the guts to go ask some of these farmers how things work, which is more nerve than I ever had, and I grew up on a farm. It was a blast from the past to see these illustrations, and I wish my Dad were still alive so I could give him a copy of this book. We lived in a farm house with a humongous gable-roofed barn, and worked constantly with the mowers and balers and dump-rakes shown in this book. The cows were my father's pets; he had samples of most of the breeds described within. And he could remember plowing with horses on HIS father's farm, just up the road. I write, and I am keeping this book as a reference for my Vermont and St.Lawrence Valley farm characters. I also lent it to a well-known children's illustrator, who then went out and bought a copy of her own. So it's an artist's reference, too.

I really wish Azon had a picture of the book to display on their website, as it's quite attractive. It's a smallish, hardbound book with black and gold inlay on a deep, red cover with a silhouette of a prancing rat.As other reviewers have stated, this is not really a book in the normal sense, one that you would sit down with in your reading chair and pour over, but more of a piece of conceptual art. What Mr. Glover has done is take a book originally published around 1896 about a study in rat catching and modify it with edits, artwork, and pictures. Many times the artwork and pictures will obscure some of the text, which can make reading of the book difficult, but it could be that this book really wasn't meant to be read, but just experienced as a visual form of expressionism. The book ties in with a CD released by Crispin Hellion Glover called 'Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution. The Solution = Let It Be.' in that he reads passages from the book, with music by Barnes and Barnes. An interesting book from an interesting artist, but I would be hard pressed to recommend this for everyone. It's not that I don't think people would understand it, even though I don't quite get it myself, but then that's part of the appeal to me. I don't have to understand something to enjoy it. By the way, the copy I got from Amazon has Glover's signature (I'm pretty sure it's his, as it ain't mine) near the front, in gaudy silver paint marker.

graphics are amazing.the seller not so great

I love his work =) very satisfied! x x x x x x x x x x x x x

Glover takes Henry C. Barkley's book "Studies in the Art of Rat Catching" and cuts, pastes, manipulates it into another work in and of itself. The story starts out the same, but morphs into a hilarious and bizarre read that has to be experienced to be appreciated. Words cannot describe it. Glover edits out all references to ferrets, changes the ending substantially. When reading the original version, I found myself missing the crazy pictures, especially those of the Sand Pit Man. This is a must-read, and I would recommend getting the original Barkley book as well for purposes of comparison. It is available now in a reprint edition through Amazon.

This has to be one of the strangest concepts and executions I have ever born witness to. Actor Crispin Glover, best known as George McFly from Back To the Future, takes a book written in the late 1800's about catching vermin and randomly inserts several sketches and ink blots, as well as changing the text when he doesn't like the way things are going, before releasing this thin "book" under his own name. Long known as an eccentric(check out some of his recordings,)this certainly comes close to broaching the line of full blown insanity. Interesting only as a curious example of "outsider art," Rat Catching is best approached cautiously, and preferably while intoxicated.

Crispin Glover is the king of odd - let's face it! If you love him, Rat Catching is a must! He has taken some obscure book from centuries ago and ...well...reimagained it. What? Yes. He has the book and his own art and edits thrown in. I have never seen anything like this. Isn't that what out-there art is?

clever

This is an excellant book by the genius Crispin Glover..... His mother actually runs the publishing company, volcanic eruptions, that also sells these books for $25, and for an additional $2 shipping, you can get these books signed by mister glover himself... i really do not know why people would buy from amazon when they could get their very own signed copy of three of mister glovers wonderful books. members.aol.com/vlcncrptns/VolcanicEruptions

I chose 5 stars because I like every thing about this book. I gave the first star because I like how the kid stands up for him self. I gave the second star because I like the main characters attitude about the situation. I gave the third star because of how they have characters from the other books in this book and all the other books go along with the book this review is on. I gave the forth star because I like the way they always have a good ending in different ways. I gave the fifth star because of how they use interesting words that make the book fun to read. I think that kids that are nine years old and higher should be reading this book. It is really short and easy to read. But I wouldn't recommend this book to thirteen year olds or higher than that to read this book because of how easy it is to read.

Pretty good book for my 2nd and 4th grader. The started reading this book series last year and continued reading them. They asked me for the whole set. I would recommend to other moms. I notice though, that as you go up in the series the writing gets smaller, so be mindful of that.

My 12 year old really enjoys these books. I like to see him excited about something that isn’t electronic.

I personally loved this series. When I first got my kindle fire, I thought it wad mainly for games! After I finished the last book, it inspired me to read more on it. I want a 4th book! Like my comment if you agree!

This is a great book for any kid who simply wants to enjoy reading. I have found that for struggling readers Lexie around 600 that this book is a fantastic work to keep their interest.

I bought the first 3 books in this series for my 10 year old son for Christmas , he loves to read and has already finished them. So now we will be ordering the rest in the series. He also used these books for his monthly book report . Darlene

First chapter book my eight year old son has enjoyed. Can't wait to find out what happens next. Fantastic read.

Great series to just keep them reading and working their little minds. My middle school son loves them.

Review

"Inspired by Marcus Garvey and the drive to make a difference, Lewis Michaux opened the National Memorial African Bookstore in Harlem at the end of the Great Depression with an inventory of five books and a strong faith that black people were hungry for knowledge. Over the next thirty-five years, his store became a central gathering place for African American writers, artists, intellectuals, and political figures, including Malcolm X, who frequently gave his speeches in front of the bookstore. But Michaux also sought to reach ordinary citizens, believing that pride and self-knowledge would grow naturally from an understanding of global black history and current events. He didn't just sell books; he surrounded his customers with ideas and provocative discussion. He also drew people in with pithy window signs that used humor and clever rhymes. When Sugar Ray Robinson stopped by in 1958, for example, Michaux communicated his disapproval of the hair-straightening products the boxer used: 'Ray what you put on your head will rub off in your bed. It’s what you put in your head that will last 'til you’re dead.' Short chapters―some just a paragraph or two―are written in thirty-six different voices, mostly those of Michaux himself, family members, and close associates. Some of the voices are those of fictitious characters based on composites―customers, a newspaper reporter, a street vendor―but most are real people whose statements have been documented by the author in her meticulous research. The voices are interspersed with documents such as articles from the New York Amsterdam News and Jet magazine and with excerpts from Michaux's FBI file. As Michaux's grandniece, the author also had access to family papers and photographs. Given the author's close relationship with the subject, she manages to remain remarkably objective about him, largely due to her honest portrayal of the lifelong conflict between him and many of his family members, most notably his evangelist brother, who didn't approve of his radical politics. Sophisticated expressionistic line drawings illustrate key events. An extraordinary, inspiring book to put into the hands of scholars and skeptics alike. Appended are a family tree, source notes, a bibliography, further reading, and an index of historical characters." --starred, The Horn Book Magazine (Journal)"Lewis Michaux provided a venue for his fellow African-Americans to have access to their own history and philosophy at a time when the very idea was revolutionary. Michaux's family despaired of him, as he engaged in petty crime and was obviously headed in the wrong direction. He began to read, however, and discovered a connection to the writings of Marcus Garvey and others, and he determined that knowledge of black thinkers and writers was the way to freedom and dignity. With an inventory of five books, he started his National Memorial African Bookstore as 'the home of proper propaganda' and built it into a Harlem landmark, where he encouraged his neighbors to read, discuss and learn, whether or not they could afford to buy. His clients included Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Langston Hughes and Nikki Giovanni. Nelson, Michaux's great-niece, makes use of an exhaustive collection of interviews, articles, books, transcripts and FBI files, filling in the gaps with 'informed speculation.' Brief entries arranged in mostly chronological order read seamlessly so that fact and fiction meld in a cohesive whole. Michaux's voice blends with those of the people in his life, providing a full portrait of a remarkable man. Copious illustrations in the form of photographs, copies of appropriate ephemera and Christie's powerfully emotional free-form line drawings add depth and focus. A stirring and thought-provoking account of an unsung figure in 20th-century American history." --starred, Kirkus Reviews (Journal)"Nelson and Christie, the team behind Bad News for Outlaws, blend photographs, original artwork, and archival materials with fictionalized first-person narratives to tell the story of Nelson's great-uncle, Lewis Michaux, who opened a Harlem bookstore that served as a meeting place and symbol of black empowerment for 35 years. Tracing Lewis's roots to a childhood filled with questioning and rebellion, Nelson alternates between Lewis's voice and those of his parents, brothers, and others―characters who, like Lewis, spring to life on page. After rejecting a life in service of the church, Lewis leaves Virginia for Harlem, where in 1939 he opens the National Memorial African Bookstore, 'by and about black people,' earning the nickname 'the Professor.' The narrative expands to include the voices of Harlem business owners, residents, and store visitors over the decades, their stories and perspectives revealing how one man's vision helped galvanize his community. Nelson and Christie deliver an engrossing blend of history, art, and storytelling in this deeply moving tribute to a singular individual." --starred, Publishers Weekly (Journal)Lewis Michaux is not sure where he belongs in the world. As a boy, he is angry and stubborn about the treatment of his people. After floundering for several years, he finally finds a purpose in life. He starts a very small bookstore with only five books. Michaux decides to sell books written by black authors for black people. Before too long, his bookstore becomes the hottest cultural spot in Harlem. Everyone goes to the store to learn and to share ideas. Lewis Michaux’s life is invested in the bookstore and the ideas behind it.No Crystal Stair is told in short, alternative perspectives, photos, FBI reports, and historical documents, creating an eye-pleasing and easy to read format. This eye-opening story starts with Lewis Michaux at the age of nine and ends with his death. His idea that people need to know their past to achieve their future resonates. He touched many lives, witnessed through the various perspectives in the book. During a pivotal period in history, he created a wondrous place. Significant historical figures, including many authors passed, through the bookstore: Malcolm X, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, James Baldwin, Muhammad Ali, and Louis Armstrong. This book will capture readers' interest from the first pages and they will find themselves still thinking about it weeks later.―VOYA (Journal)"This book illuminates the choices, obstacles, and triumphant moments of Nelson's great-uncle Lewis Michaux’s path to becoming one of the Civil Rights movement's most influential leaders. The subtitle, A Novel in Documents, Based on the Life and Works of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller, indicates a work of fiction, but Nelson creates a beautifully entertaining and enlightening biography through focused and thorough research and first-person narratives. Short accounts from a variety of voices move the book along quickly and provide a seemingly unbiased picture of a man who mattered to many of the Civil Right movement's elite. Including personal and historical photos adds to the biography feel, and having drawings interspersed creates a sense that the book was written as Michaux's legacy grew. A storytelling quality, as well as short pieces of history on each page, will make this appealing to anyone looking to know more about the Civil Rights era." --Library Media Connection (Journal)"Author-librarian Nelson has written a fictionalized but carefully researched life of her great-uncle Lewis Michaux, the celebrated Harlem bookseller. Born in 1895, Michaux started selling books in Harlem in the mid-1930s with a strapping supply of five books. After opening his National Memorial African Bookstore in the late '30s, he built his inventory until, by the early 1970s, it boasted some 225,000 volumes and had become America's premier bookstore specializing in books by and about African Americans. Michaux seems to have known virtually everyone who was a figure in the Harlem Renaissance and, later, the black liberation movement, and, accordingly, Nelson tells his story from multiple points of view. While most of the voices she includes are those of real people familiar with her uncle and his bookstore, some belong to fictional characters who are also the product of research. The resulting work is not only a compelling biography but also a useful addition to the literature of black history and culture. Source notes and an extensive bibliography are appended." --Booklist (Journal)"This well-documented biographical novel presents the life and work of a man whose Harlem bookstore became an intellectual, literary haven for African Americans from 1939 until 1975. Through alternating voices of actual family members, acquaintances, journalists, and the subject himself, Michaux's independent spirit, determination, and perseverance are revealed. Despite family pressure to conform to a religious life, he was restless, controversial, and questioning. Influenced by the nationalism of Marcus Garvey and the intellect of Frederick Douglass, he believed that black people needed to educate themselves as to who they were in order to improve their lives. He opened the National Memorial African Bookstore with 'five books, a building, and one hundred dollars.' He accumulated works by black writers and talked to customers and passersby about cultural awareness and self-improvement. His bookstore attracted Harlem residents; civil-rights activists, including Malcolm X and Muhammed Ali; and political attention. But in 1968, this renowned Harlem landmark fell victim to a new state office building complex. Michaux moved his bookstore once, but facing age and another forced move in 1974, he sold his massive collection. Black-and-white photos add depth to the fictionalized biography. Detailed source and bibliographic notes depict the research process, while the text reflects Nelson's skill of blending fact and fiction. Using extensive interviews, magazine and newspaper articles, church publications, books, and FBI files (tracking Michaux's political activities), Nelson recounts her great-uncle's enterprising and unflinching efforts to enrich and empower fellow African Americans. The storytelling format, candid perspectives, supplemental images, and historic connections bring to life an unheralded individualist whose story will engage readers." --starred, School Library Journal (Journal)"Opened at the end of the Great Depression, Michaux's National Memorial African Bookstore became a central gathering place for African American writers, artists, intellectuals, and political figures. In this extraordinary, inspiring book, short chapters are written in thirty-six different voices―mostly of Michaux himself and other historical people." --The Horn Book Guide (Journal)

We hear about the Civil Rights movement, the Memphis riots, bussing but this is the other side of the same coin. How one man prevailed against the odds, the prejudices and culture of the time to become a success story. I am thankful to Vaunda Micheaux Nelson for writing it and that our Bookclub chose to read it. I read most of the book over long haul international flights across the Pacific. The book held my attention a lot longer than the movies on board. Nelson chose to use the first person in her narrative by allowing each character to speak his/her feelings and thoughts for him/herself.It was indeed a tour de force and the writer used the device of some imaginary characters to fill in the gaps. In the author's notes at the end of the book the writer lists the many obstacles she had to overcome such as missing dates and other documents. Nelson admits that she only visited the Bookstore once when she was 14 but did not realize its significance back then. Years later she was to become an award winning writer and children's librarian herself. She brings the characters to life and I'm sure if I had met Lewis in person I would have been impressed by him and would want to visit his bookstore and listen to the discussions taking place.

This book made me cry, smile, and want to learn more. How amazing to have a great uncle who was so instrumental in helping his fellow Black men and women not only learn how to educate themselves, but he also spread the amazing works of Black Americans. Louis had a younger life that we cannot even imagine. Full of pain, and loss. And yet he chose to rise above this, and do something so valuable, and so enriching for himself and his neighbors. This book made me seek out to learn more about Malcolm X. What an amazing man himself. This book is a must read for everyone! And I hope especially young people reach out and get this book. So fun to read, and so fulfilling.

This is a look at the life of bookseller Lewis Michaux. He was the founder and owner of the iconic National Memorial African Bookstore in Harlem, NY. The bookstore was in business for 40 years and was often the site of many of Malcolm X's speeches. The store was distinct for its collection of books by, for and about African people. This at a time when publishing of black authors was minimal. So to amass the kind of collection he did took a lot of dedication. This book is a YA fictionalized biography of Lewis Michaux. By using this format, we get snippets from his life journey, and there are obvious parts of the story that cry out for depth. However, there is enough here to make this an enjoyable read, and to give you a sense of the man. Hopefully the existence of this YA version will lead to a fuller biography of Lewis Michaux.

I just introduced this book to a class of 6th-graders in Harlem, for whom it is, of course, local history. I told them that some of the people in the book are the protagonist's family and friends but that others are famous people. A good sign that someone is the latter is the kids' recognizing their name as one of a park or street: e.g., Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X.

A fantastic book and a great perspective on the civil rights movement! One of my favorites for sure.

This is a well written and very informative book. I learned a lot!

Great story

Rap a Tap Tap: Here's Bojangles - Think of That! (Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Books), by Diane Dillon Leo Dillon

From Publishers Weekly

In a departure from their recognizable illustration style, the versatile husband-and-wife team here uses a striking gouache painting technique that pays homage to Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas to craft an exuberant picture-book tribute to African-American tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949). Brief, rhyming text introduces the tall, lean and dapper man who "danced in the street" and "made art with his feet." In keeping with tapdancing tradition, each line of verse returns to a rhythmic refrain ("Rap a tap tap think of that!"). The deceptively simple text conveys the complexities of the era: "He danced past doors; some were open, some closed" accompanies a montage of entryways, with some people welcoming Robinson, but a white man closing his door. On the other hand "folks in fancy clothes" depicts whites and blacks together outside a show. Most spreads exude the everyday joys of a bustling city neighborhood, and the bouncy beat will hold the attention of even youngest readers. A short biographical note appears at the end of the book. The cubed-looking apartment buildings, an elevated/subway train, store fronts and traffic lights suggest Manhattan (eagle-eye readers will notice an obscured sign for 125th Street), but the scenes are general enough to lend the art a universal, timeless feel. The Dillons cleverly depict Robinson's fast-flying feet with varying shades of the same color around his legs, creating a sense of movement with a shadow/silhouette effect. The graceful figure he cuts on the page is a hoofer's delight. Ages 3-up.Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

reSchool-Grade 2-Legendary African-American tap dancer Bill "Bojangles" Robinson (1878-1949) is the subject of this picture book. Graphically, the volume is a joy and would work well in a group setting. The left side of each spread contains an outdoor scene in which people are captivated by the performer's dancing: exuberant children, dressed-to-the-nines adults, the ragged homeless. Where the boldly painted, flat images overlap, the colors change, as if the foreground objects were transparent. Continuing this approach, the dancer is rendered in brown, gray, or black on the right, sporting multiple appendages-that is, the parts of his body that are still "moving" appear in lighter shades behind or on top of the more deeply hued arms and legs. There is a sense of progressive motion until the climax, when Bojangles moves across the entire white field, a series of intersecting pale gray to black forms, finally bowing, top hat in hand. The simple, rhymed text is less inspired, sometimes a bit forced: "His feet fairly flew as he tipped his hat.- He briefly paused to pat an old cat." Each short sentence is followed by the refrain, "Rap a tap tap-think of that!" While there is call-and-response potential, it all gets a bit tedious. An afterword gives a bit more information about Robinson. This is a visually interesting introduction to a performer about whom little is written for children.Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public LibraryCopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

In addition to all the great reviews about the beautiful pictures in this book, I really like the fact that it is easy to read while learning about a key historical figure. My 2 yr old is REALLY into music - just about anything to do with it. I saw this book in the preschool room and knew I had to find it for him. The first night I read it to him, by the third refrain of the title phrase, he was saying it himself. Of course, I was reading as the book is designed to be read (I think :-) - with cadence and rhyme. He caught on quickly and knew when it was time to say "RAP A TAP TAP - THINK OF THAT!"

I saw this book somewhere and couldn't remember the title, but the illustrations stayed with me. WHAT a cool way to express motion in 2-D. I had to find this book again and I'm so glad I did. Those cool, crisp, translucent images and simple introduction to the iconic Bo Jangles. I'm pleased to see it's since been awarded a Coretta Scott Kind honor. Well deserved. Do not know how kids take to it-- bought it for myself!

This is one of my favorite children's books. I even taught some young children how to tap dance after I read it and told them about Bojangles.

My students really enjoyed me reading this book. I liked the rhyme and how the book tried to make the words sound like tap dancing. The illustrations are an excellent flavor of African American culture years ago in a city environment.

I bought this book because my daughter began taking tap dancing lessons. I wanted her to know about the history of the dance form. We loved reading the story because of the simplicity of the text and the rhythm in the text. I chose this book because it is about a real person who made an artistic impact as an African American man that is recognized by all ethnicities! The illustrations were fabulous!

The children love the rhythm/rhymes included in reading this book. They are constantly moving as it is read and they respond with "Read it again!"

Very beautifully written and illustrated book. My grandson really loves it. He's 2 years old.

it was perfect!! it was bought for a student of mine who wanted the book so badly. She is sooooo happy with it!!Thank you,Glenda Buckley

A single woman in 1820 is a woman who must work hard to determine how to support herself. In a world where a woman is not allowed to vote, make decisions, or often own their own home, if a woman is left widowed or fails to find a spouse, it is a short path into poverty and despair. The Ladies of Ivy Cottage is the second novel in the excellent Tales from Ivy Hill series by one of my favorite authors, Julie Klassen. Ivy Cottage is owned by the Grove family. Mercy Grove has moved firmly into spinsterhood and has found happiness by running a girl’s school in her family home with her Aunt Mathilda. Her parents live in London and her brother is overseas, allowing her to live life as she wishes. Her happiness is shattered when her parents arrive with a perspective suitor and an ultimatum. Will Mercy surrender her heart for her school?Rachel Ashford grew up a lady, but her father lost the family fortune and a distance cousin has taken over her childhood home. Rachel goes to live with her friend Mercy in Ivy Cottage determined to find a way to support herself. And she does just that when she uses her inheritance of her father’s library to start the first subscription library in Ivy Hill. Rachel pines over her lost love, Sir Timothy, while also considering the attentions of her cousin and the potential of life back at her family estate. Will Rachel find happiness?Jane Bell the main character from book one also returns with more mystery and romance. I loved all the characters in the village and the dark secrets that we learned in this novel. I also loved how the novel explored the real loss that a woman faces when she loses her children to miscarriages and is not allowed to morn or discuss the topic. I also loved the exploration of how a woman could make it is 1820 England. The woman banding together and helping each other out in the village is another favorite element of mine in this book.My absolute favorite part of this novel was the hint of the one of my favorite books of all time, Persuasion by Jane Austen. One of the storylines gently follows Persuasion complete with the hero giving the heroine a copy of Persuasion with Captain Wentworth’s speech highlighted. Sigh. I LOVED it!The Ladies of Ivy Cottage is a Christian romance which I like. What this really means is that it is more like a Jane Austen regency romance where the romance is romantic and does not veer off into bedroom scenes. There is also no swearing. There is a light discussion of faith such as when the ladies go to church or look for guidance in prayer. My favorite quotes:“Remember, Fanny, there is more to life than beauty, which doesn’t last anyway. There is character and virtue. Gentleness and sweetness of temper.”“And . . . have you a favorite author?” He grimaced. “I do detest that question. How can one answer? How can one choose a favorite from among one’s very confidants and mentors? I am not a youth with my arm slung around the shoulder of one chum to the exclusion of others. Each suits at a different time. A different season . . . “Overall, The Ladies of Ivy Cottage was a joy to read – great characters, setting, and story. I can’t wait to see what happens next in Ivy Hill. I highly recommend this to fans of Jane Austen, regency romances, or just someone just looking for a heartwarming story with wonderful characters.Book Source: Christmas Present from my Husband Ben

I am loving the Tales from Ivy Hill! The Ladies of Ivy Cottage is another winning story, full of charm, whimsy, and characters that I grew to love. The plot is best described as steady, flavored with issues that aren't particularly heart-stopping, but still full of heart and emotion.Usually when a book switching between characters, I usually get impatient to leave one and get back to my favorite, but that wasn't the case here. Even though I probably do prefer Jane over the others (I'm usually loyal to the first character I "meet"), the other characters are endearing, and I loved each part of their stories, as they navigated their lives. It was a delight to see more of Jane and Thora, but also delightful to get to know Rachel more, a character that I wasn't too sure about in the first book. I admit, when she said that she didn't care for books, I just thought there was no way I could relate to her, ha! But then, when she stepped out and started her own circulation library, I had to come around. I just loved the details about the circulating library.Saying that the plot is steady is not to say that there were no mysteries or no romance. Indeed, some of the character surprised me, both in the revelations that were made about them, and the way they interacted with others in unexpected ways. One certain character I was just desperate to see back, and even though all things are not resolved, I have high hopes! And, oh my, this book has some of the sweetest and endearing declarations of love that just made me sigh. I'm so looking forward to the third book. In the next book, I really hope to see a happily ever after for Jane, and I can't wait to see what happens with Mercy - I thought I knew what I wanted to happen, but now I'm just not sure and can see multiple avenues. I can definitely see myself re-reading this series, and they are definitely going on my keeper shelf, which is what I say about all of Klassen's titles. Both books are on my favorites list for the year. It seems such a long wait for book three, but I know it'll be worth it!
