Baba Yaga: A Russian Folktale, by Katya Arnold

From Publishers Weekly

Less compelling than Patricia Polacco's Babushka Baba Yaga (Children's Forecasts, July 12), which also features the witch of Russian legend, Arnold's rather thin story is noteworthy chiefly for the intriguing art that accompanies it. Here, Baba Yaga kidnaps Tishka, beloved son of an elderly couple, and takes him to her shack so that her daughter can cook him up for supper. But Tishka outwits the would-be chef, putting her in the oven in his place, and Baba Yaga unwittingly eats her daughter, whereupon Tishka escapes. Arnold supplies gouache paintings inspired by "lubok" pictures, a Russian folk art medium that dates from the 17th century. Her vibrantly colored illustrations, printed with separately executed black line drawings, resemble primitive woodcuts--a fitting match for this retelling of a Russian folktale. Ages 5-8. From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 4-Bold illustrations combine with an absorbing story to create a Baba Yaga who definitely means business. For the text, Arnold has used her own translation of "Tereshichka," a tale collected by Aleksandr Afanas'ev in the 19th century. In a prefatory note, she explains Baba Yaga's role in Russian folklore, cites her source, and describes the media she used for the illustrations. Longing for a baby, a couple wrap a piece of wood in a blanket and rock it to sleep in a cradle. When the wood is transformed into a little boy, the delighted pair name him Tishka and raise him as a son. Although he has been warned about Baba Yaga, the boy is tricked by the evil witch and taken home to be her dinner. In a plot twist reminiscent of the Grimms' "Hansel and Gretel," Tishka feigns ignorance and asks Baba Yaga's daughter to show him how to enter the oven. In the process, the girl becomes the witch's main course and Tishka hides in a tree. Discovering she has eaten her own daughter, Baba Yaga flies into a rage and tries to cut down the tree with her iron teeth. A goose flying overhead saves the boy and is later rewarded with food and a warm home. The story's more brutal elements are nicely balanced by Arnold's extraordinary artwork and her storytelling talent. Inspired by Russian folk art, the vibrant illustrations are done in gouache on watercolor paper and outlined with heavy black lines. Their size influences the pace of the book-small ones accompany the pages of text; full-page and double-page spreads mirror the important plot twists. Suitable for sharing aloud with older children, Arnold's depiction of Baba Yaga pulls very few punches. In the process, it presents a slice of Russian folklore in an authentic and masterful style.Denise Anton Wright, Illinois State University, NormalCopyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

As my wife and I are on a health kick at the moment we have been looking for a cookbook that contains tasty, healthy recipes that are easy to follow and taste great. In this book we think we've found exactly what we've been looking for. The recipes are fantastic and couldn't be easier to cook. The ingredients are easily sourced and they are incredibly tasty. They are healthy and we are already noticing the difference and we have not had the book that long. Give it a try.

This is a cheap-looking print-on-demand of an electronic self-publication without any professional apparatus at all. And is it really a "recipe" to mix cool whip with pudding mix and pie filling and pour it into a graham cracker crust? (In a book labeled "for weight loss"?) The whole point of the Mediterranean diet is to eat REAL foods, not mix together artificial and sugary powdered substances. This is the second time I've purchased an amateurish product that Amazon made look like a "real" book online. I wish the company would be a bit more honest about whether we are buying professionally produced items or not. I'm not against self-publication per se, but serious self-publishers should strive to produce something that is professional. This isn't. I'm returning it and I'm disappointed. From now on I'm going to look for my cookbooks in a brick and mortar bookshop where I can see for myself whether an item is worth the money or not.

The Mediterranean Diet is more than just a “diet,” it is a healthy way of life that puts emphasis on fresh, wholesome foods, and moderate amounts of dairy produce and healthy fats. It differs from a vegetarian or vegan diet because it does not restrict meat entirely but rather reduces the amount that is consumed on average. And if we are going to be honest with ourselves, that can’t be a bad thing.Mediterranean Diet: Mediterranean Diet For Beginners: Fast and Easy Mediterranean Diet Cookbook and Home Recipes for Weight Loss, is well written and nicely presented. It would make an ideal book for the beginner or anybody interested in this healthy lifestyle.

My life has changed for the better after this cookbook and yours will too.For people who want to change their diet or just get new healthy recipes. For everyone who wants to lose weight but doesn't want to stop eating good food, this is the cookbook you need.Everything is easily laid out to follow and has pictures of finished meals that other cookbooks on Amazon, I have found, do not have. My whole family and I are living healthy now because of this cookbook. If you want something amazing for you and your family you know this is the best present you can give them. This cookbook offers 100+ delicious and healthy Mediterranean recipes and for each you will find:1. Picture of a finished meal,2. Prep time,3. Cook time,4. Easy to follow directions5. Nutritional values (this is great if you are looking to lose that unhealthy weight)Great value for the price. Highly recommend!

Wow ... I've never written a review before, but this book is a joke! First, the recipes are not based on the Mediterranean Diet, which focuses on healthy, real food. These recipes call for fat-free Cool Whip and Ritz Crackers! Not even close to healthy. Many recipes also are missing directions or ingredients. It would be so disappointing to spend the time buying the ingredients and making a recipe only to realize something's missing. For example, the directions for a smoothie called for agave nectar and vanilla extract, which weren't in the ingredient list. The Blueberry and Banana Oats didn't include any blueberries in the ingredients or directions. There's also a salad that calls for lemon vinaigrette and turkey tacos that include cranberry pear sauce (on tacos?), but there were no recipes for the dressing or sauce. The book is shoddily thrown together with tons of errors and typos and is written in all italics, which personally killed my eyes. And I was disappointed that there were no pictures, despite reviews that say there are (either fake reviews or they got a completely different book). There are so many great resources for Mediterranean Diet recipes, and this isn't one of them!

I have been on the Mediterranean diet for sometime now. I don't do it for weight loss just do it to maintain my weight as I push past 50 and I find this diet offers healthy choices. The author included a decent intro section on the diet and some useful tips at the beginning and end of the book. Some really simple recipes and some more involved.

When you eat well and it tastes good it is easy and exciting to do. The Mediterranean Diet for Beginners is a "heart -healthy diet" proven to lower cholesterol and heart disease. It is considered to be one of the most nutritious menus. This is not actually a diet but a culinary tradition that focuses on fresh vegetables and fruits, nuts, seafood, whole grains, and olive oil along with a glass of red wine once in a while.Highly recommend!

Got my book superfast. Got my book superfast. Reading it now, awesome recipes. No pictures but get the general idea. Very easy to understand. I'm going to enjoy trying new recipes and getting on a healthy meal plan. Even has a five day menu planned for me, don't have to think about it. Like I said no pictures but very easy to understand .

Influenced by Elvis, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and other folk singers, they produced their number-one hit “The Sound of Silence” after the assassination of JFK; the song broke all records, outselling even the Beatles. (Cross Post from Goodreads)I was just born into a world that might offer me a musical soundtrack in the same year that Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel would part ways. And if it hadn't been for the music of that time and the way it came to us, through the circle speakers flush with the dash of the car my parents could afford or through the singular earbud that came with my Donald Duck-shaped transistor radio I might have missed them altogether.I read WHEN PAUL MET ARTIE the way that I thought it should be read and the way that I hope the teachers with whom I have some audience or influence might: with the 1981 Central Park Concert playing in the background. The 1970s were a time when we listened to music as a person and as a culture. We attended to Top 40 lists and we knew what the number one song was for the past few weeks because we mentally recorded these lists while we waited patiently to hear if our favorite song was able to hold that number one slot.I encountered the music of Simon & Garfunkel through a variety of speakers. This was an age before the soundtracks of our lives became the limewire that would spark for a brief moment only to be replaced by another kind of energy. Or i-Tunes so perfectly-branded so as to capture the way we me-me-me ourselves into the personalizing (or self-curating) of our playlists. We shared this music. This is the music I go back to when I think of a friend's older father who knew the opening notes of "Sounds of Silence" even if he tapped his foot which, in turn, would speed up the tempo. The music of Simon and Garfunkel tap into deeper memories for me.While in Navy bootcamp, I remember being driven to tears by the company commanders making us listen as a group to "I am a Rock" after "cycling" us both physically and emotionally. These were the words that might have led me back to a shag carpet in a mobile home now bringing me to feel a shame while standing at attention on a hard tile deck of a barracks so far from home. The music brings us home. This book feels good in the hands. It's got a certain heft, a heaviness that makes the history of the music feel solid. Good music never loses its toe-hold in the history of a culture just because it has slipped so many slots to the nostalgic countdowns that play in our hearts and minds. The case when folded flat depict a young Paul walking to the spine where he will meet Art. The artwork is absolutely striking and we have only peeled back the dust jacket the way we might slip a record out of its sleeve. Genius packaging by the creative team and Candelwick here. The book begs to be picked up much the same way as we were drawn to ODETTA or MUDDY. There is a want to return to the history and to the music just in the arrival of the book.In a book, there is no breakup unless we need to mention it for historical context. As I write this review, "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is playing and I am thinking, "WHEN PAUL MET ARTIE needs to be in every classroom library as a means of "laddering" (Teri Lesesne) the music to the story of how artists meet as children, bond over the simple stuff of childhood, and move together in creative process to eventually share their gift with the world. The titles of Neri's pieces which chronicle the meeting and the early work of the duo derive from the familiar song titles that might take the reader back before entering into Neri's free-flowing, free form, free verse draws the reader into the culture, the music of the 50s and the 60s and how two boys from NYC find themselves inadvertently work against the sounds and the fads of the the time to give all of us what we need even now. . .soft, gentle voice with a discernible message of reflection and hope.If there is a perfect synthesis of subject, writing, and illustration, WHEN PAUL MET ARTIE is it and there are opportunities here to bring readers back by way of the music to a time that they rarely get to in their studies of American History for the bulk of what might be covered in the span of one-hundred and eighty days. Here, Neri and Litchfield are able to capture two decades, a ten-year absence, and a return that secures a ticket for every reader who couldn't be there in that September of 1981.This is a book not to be missed. I know I can hand-sell this to my friends of my generation, but what is in the gift of the music and Neri's mentor text in how to render a non-fiction subject in verse that is inviting and informative all at the same time?In 1981, I did not have to deal with the enormity of what I saw on HBO as an eleven-year-old. I had not been aware of the ramifications or the celebration of these two artists on the stage together after so many years. They were performing the music that had been a part of my life bridging some troubled water of which I was not aware.Greg Neri and David Litchfield will be responsible this year for all of going back to dust off the records that made us to sing along, to dream, to come together in our sense of shared anthem. And we'll be listening together from the speakers of our time. The music knows what to do. Play. Do we?

The story is well written and accurate, and the drawings are charming! Well done!

This is a gorgeous, oversized picture book that can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The multi-colored drawings that accompany each page spread are thought provoking, sensitive portrayals of this legendary rock duo. I love the special appearance of Bob Dylan atop a brightly colored rainbow. This book tells their story through poetic verse, filling each stanza with details, thoughts and inspirations of their journey together. I enjoyed learning about who they were and where they came from. Great non-fiction book. It would look great on a coffee table-commanding space with its richly hued cover (both the book cover and the actual book are beautiful!)

If young readers don't know S&G, this is a lovely introduction, focusing on their boyhood friendship, shared musical evolution, and many challenges on the path to eventual stardom against the backdrop of dramatic social change. Aimed at upper-elementary readership, grown-ups will thoroughly enjoy this as well. Back matter includes a helpful "Musical Connections" list of relevant listening, from Enrico Caruso (Art Garfunkel’s first inspiration) to Al Jolson, Glenn Miller, Nat King Cole, Everly Brothers, Beatles, and more. Beautifully done.

This children's picture book biography of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel (i.e. Simon & Garfunkel) was an interesting read. Things I learned .....Paul and Artie are contemporaries of mine. Well, I might be three or four years older, but basically we're contemporaries who grew up with the music and societal mores of the 1950's. By the time these two began to make waves (though they had splashed around quite a bit prior) in the music world, I was engulfed in the busy "mommy" world of raising children and not really into the "music scene" of the timeIt was a busy and bewildering time on the world-scene and particularly on the American stage of change and politics. During this period we saw the assignation of President J.F.Kennedy and his brother Attorney General of the US Robert Kennedy. We also saw the raw and ugly and fierce and determined world of racial change and uprising. Then another assignation - Martin Luther King, Jr. It was also a time of drastic challenges to the way things were done, the political scene, the war in Vietnam, and a general challenge of the establishment. So the 1960's birthed much change in America and part of that change was the music.Paul and Artie (and I) grew up during the early days of Rock and Roll. This was not heavy metal music of the 1980's and 1990's but it was different. But Paul and Artie gave to Rock and Roll a folksy tone. Their harmonies were beautiful. Their music and the words expressed deep seated emotions of grief (Kennedy's assignation) and other areas. This children's book takes us back to Paul and Artie's beginning as young Jewish boys growing up in the New York area. They meet, become friends, and later discover their ability to blend their talents creatively. Their journey was fraught with starts and stops, ups and downs, joys and disappointments. But their journey made them a legend in the music world. And during my busy time as a young mother scurrying to and fro with my children, I played the radio. I didn't know who I was listening to but I remember "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Sound of Silence," and who knows what else of their recordings....Folks who enjoyed the music of Simon and Garfunkel during their young adult years will relish this childred's book and will want to share it with children they know to let them learn how two boys meet, became friends, and went on to become succesful musicians.DISCOSURE: I received a complimentary copy from Candlewick Press to facilitate this review. Opinions are my own and are freely given.

I found this book to be very uninspiring and ultimately disappointing. The book should be called "New Philosophy" for "New Media" instead of New Philosophy for New Media. It is certainly not new philosophy and certainly doesn't cover all new media or media art.First of all, mr. Hansen is very selective when it comes to new media art. The artists he discusses have given the body a central role, but one could name just as much artists for whom the body is not *that* central. But one could even contest the representation of this 'centralness': whereas one could discern some sort of negotiation between the body and the outside world (in this case technology) in the works of these artists, for Hansen this negotiation has always already been decided in favor of the human body.So in the end it is not exactly 'new philosophy' we're dealing with, but, at least in this reader's view, desperate attempts to keep some old ways of thinking supreme, without ever trying to question them or trying out new ways of thinking. In a strange way one can sense this desperateness especially when it goes hand in hand with something that seems to be some sort of grudge against a new batch of thinkers who have attracted most of the attention, at least in some circles in the academic world (read: the world of cultural studies). In these moments mr. Hansen's style leaves academic or creative thinking altogether and changes in a very childish name-calling and misrepresentation. For example, mr. Hansen seems to be very displeased by the fact that Friedrich Kittler has made such a name for himself as a media scientist. So whenever he refers to Kittler, he puts media scientist inbetween quotation marks, as on p. 71:Without a doubt, it is German "media scientist" Friedrich Kittler... (p.71)This is not the first time mr. Hansen refers to Friedrich Kittler in his book, so, one could ask him(/her)self, why here refer to the nationality of Kittler, should it suddenly matter that Kittler is not only a "media scientist" but also a German? And should the combination of being a German AND a "media scientist" (note the quotation marks) tell us enough, without even taking the substance of Kittler's work into account?Even though this might seem to be something too little to fall over when judging a book, it becomes VERRY annoying when it keeps happening all through the work, especially when it threatens to take over the place of philosophical critique or thinking.Of course, I didn't choose the passage above for no reason. It was exactly on that spot when I was totally repelled by Hansen's "work" (note that I am also using the quotation marks in a strategic way, just to mirror mr. Hansens's style). Let's see the rest of the sentence:Without a doubt, it is German "media scientist" Friedrich Kittler who has most provocatively engaged the post-(anti-)humanist implications of digitization. (p.71)This whole passage (and one could actually say: the whole book) serves no other end than to (mis-)represent post-humanist thinking as anti-humanism. Every priority given to technology becomes easily "technical determinism" (p.74) and Hansen knows how to connect some feelings of superiority to his own way of thinking: his quest is a quest of keeping the human in humanity alive, while all other thinkers reduce the human being in some way.Well, let's read a short quote from one work from among the many books on post-humanism:Humanism, in by now well-rehearsed arguments [!], produces oppressive institutions and discourses because it presumes that one sort of person (usually male, white, educated, and wealthy) is exemplary, and/or that there exists a "human nature" that is "the same" for all. (From the book: Avatar Bodies by Ann Weinstone, p. 3).Apparently this is not so well-rehearsed for mr. Hansen: post-humanism has *nothing* whatsoever to do with anti-humanism, it is simply put a different way of thinking about what it is to be a human being. In general it tries to get rid of some rigid ways of thinking about the 'human', to create more space for other beings (be it people who do not fit the rigid image of humanism or be it some other being which is part of our world). One could say that in the end post-humanism is a much more 'humane' way of thinking than the obsolete and dogmatic ideas of european or western humanism. Whichever way you take it though, it is *NOT* anti-humanism.As Deleuze argues in Difference and Repetition, real freedom is not about trying to find answers for old questions, but to be able to ask new questions, relevant and actual at the moment the questions are asked, in an always changing world. It is no wonder that affect and technology have become some of the central issues in todays thinking. But mr. Hansen misrepresents these issues in a very, well, creative way. But this creativity has nothing to do with asking new, relevant question, but a creativity in keeping creativity at bay!So, the central argument of this book goes as follows: even though some things have changed (technology and with technology the nature of the work of art and the media in general), it was always already the human body which framed these changes. It is assumed, but mostly hidden in clever ways, that despite all these changes, the human body has stayed the same and will stay the same and will thus continue to determine (if we are carefull enough to see) how things will continue to change in the future.Do we actually know this for a fact? It is exactly here that one could (and several have already tried to do so, even if Hansen puts their new ways of thinking inbetween quotation marks) that one could open up new spaces of thinking, ask new questions. The central idea of affect is that we, human beings, are capable of changing the world, because we are capable to do things with our bodies, but also - and certainly not less! - that we are capable of being changed by the world. So, even if most art is created for or through human embodiment, the central question one should ask in relation to Hansens work is: is this still the same body as a century ago? As five centuries ago? How can we know? Well, we need to ask questions to find out, we cannot assume that the human body has not changed and has dictated all changes. This would be the least philosophical and least creative way one could take.Claiming that technology, even if it is created by humanity, can change the human body in unforeseen ways is no technical determinism, on the contrary, it is claiming that we human beings are very human because we *are* affectable, through our bodies, in ways we are not even aware of. A very beautiful example is the chapter on Stelarc in Brian Massumi's work: Parables for the Virtual. Movement, Affect, Sensation, from 2002. (It is very surprising by the way that mr. Hansen doesn't mention Stelarc even once in this book, while it is a book on new media art). One of Hansen's arguments at this point becomes how the human body itself creates some sort of rhythm or duration. This functions as an example of how the body creates the frame for our perception. This frame is so rooted in our bodies, that it becomes in Hansen's view a non-changeable, transcendental given. The philosophical journey Hansen undertakes always ends up with our bodies. Or, in other words, a journey to the self, the world outside has no place in this whole whatsover. Whereas other thinkers use this kind of bodily rhythm to argue that the body has always been open to and in sync with the outside world. In the end, it was always an illusion (a sweet one of course) that the human body was outside and especially above the rest of nature, it is no smaller illusion that the body is outside or above technology. Because we created this technology does not mean that we totally control it's direction and/or nature. Most technology is invented by chance and through an ongoing negotiation with the outside world (material resources, natural 'laws' etc.) and not because we human beings directed it in some way. We could at least give ourselves the opportunity to ask questions about how techonology affects us, whether this is indeed framed by "the human body" (if there is such one unchanging universal substance) or not.In fact one could put Hansen's scheme totally upside down: technology or art (in what media whatsoever) has never been framed by the human body, but by the world, the cosmos we live in. The human being or the human body has always been just a little dot framed and affected by cosmic forces in many ways through our embodiment. Let the fact that technology is created by humanity not fool anyone, we are still affected by cosmic forces, but this time through a combination of our emodiment and technology. It is the nature of this combination and how certain forces affect our being in new ways through this combination that we must study, this, in my view, can never be a journey to our own body, but to the great unknown outside.

I must mention two points in relation to this work.1. There is a true "newness" to new media espoused by Hansen in this work. This is based around the numeric, addressible quality of the digital image (Hansen reading Couchot) which renders it a process in exploded, bodily enacted frame rather than a traditional picture delimited by inherent form, so I must disagree with the editorial review.2. I am unsure about Hansen's concept of the digital facial image as proposed in this work; I am not totally sure that this is quite the way forward - my thinking is not yet finalised on this.Beyond these two comments, I must add that this work is a very weighty and useful addition to that philosophical project of revising and updating the continually pertinent Bergson, which I can recommend to all new media scholars.
