I love this book. It has easy to follow instructions, great songs for early intermediate- intermediate level, AND looks like a book for teens. No cartoony illustrations. Hooray! My teens were needing a solid classical book that neither "talked down" nor looked silly. This made them feel like they were growing up, even in their music's appearance. I only wish the blues song was more engaging.

The Young Royals series is terrific. I've purchased them all for my daughter, and I'm reading them too so that I can discuss them with her. They are a fast read (for an adult), and they portray the historical periods well. Meyers's rendering of the protagonists is insightful, and she makes her reader care about each of them, even when their choices are unsavory. Each of the books -- Catherine, Anne, Mary, Elizabeth -- presents a different perspective on similar events, so I recommend reading them all. These books are a great way to get your daughter interested in history.

I read the first book in 5th grade, now leaving 6th grade entering the world of 7th, this is a great series. I didn't know it was a series in till now, today to be exact. I've fell in love with the olden times and this shows that, no madder how much you think princess and princes have a good life, they come with great responsibilities and sacrifices. I recommend this series to middle school students and early on high school students (endless you are like me and you are progressing faster then an average student. I'm a 7th grader and I read at a 11th grade level)!!!

From the moment I read the first page, I was captivated. I had already read "Doomed Queen Anne: A Young Royals Book", the book about Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife, and I wanted to see things from the perspective of Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife. I've always wondered what the real Catherine (or, in this case, Catalina) was like. I wanted to know why she did what she did, and why she made the decisions and choices that she did. This book gave me insight into that very thing. I was spellbound by this book, told in the words of one of the most intriguing women in all of history. This is truly a beautiful story, starting from the moment Catherine set out from Spain to be Prince Arthur's wife, all the way to her marriage to the newly made King Henry VIII, and ending with her divorce and exile.

Patience, Princess Catherine is Carolyn Meyer's YA retelling of Catalina of Spain's early years in the Tudor Court, her marriage, teenage widowhood, and subsequent years-long struggle to see her promised betrothal to her one-time brother-in-law, Prince Henry, realized. Framed by chapters where an older Catherine, victim of King Henry's attempts to see their marriage dissolved, Patience, Princess Catherine is a diary-like reminiscence of Catherine's arrival in England, interspersed with brief passages from Henry's point-of-view.Having just finished Philippa Gregory's The Constant Princess, I sadly found this fictional retelling of Catherine's life sorely lacking. While Meyers does an adequate job sticking to the historical record in that Arthur is viewed as weak and sickly, his marriage to Catherine left unconsummated, facts alone do not a compelling story make. Meyers' incarnation of Catherine is curiously lifeless -- there is no suggestion of the vibrant queen who reigned at Henry's side for over twenty years, who fought for her marriage and position. Catherine here is immature, easily swayed, and -- thanks to the diary-like format of most of the novel -- frankly boring as there is no well-formed narrative, only a dry recitation of events punctuated by fictional insight into Henry's psyche.Given the inevitable tragic conclusion of Henry and Catherine's marriage, the insight Meyer's attempts to provide into Henry's youthful view of Catherine suggest -- in this context -- that Henry harbored a passion for his first bride. Whether or not this is in fact the case, Meyer's writes Henry with the voice of a man much older than ten years of age when the book opens. Not only does the tone feel off, but these passages in particular are riddled with distracting spelling and grammatical errors, with words misspelled, misused, or omitted altogether.Patience, Princess Catherine is a textbook introduction to Catherine and Henry -- the research is there, but these larger-than-life characters are stripped of their life and vibrancy, left colorless, pale shadows on the page. Between the characterizations, awkwardly-executed narrative, and abundance of distracting editorial mistakes, I was left rather underwhelmed by this offering in Meyer's Young Royals series. Hopefully, subsequent volumes in the Young Royals series will succeed in bringing history to life on the page in a more vibrant, engaging manner.

I absolutely love Carolyn Meyer and her writing style. I love how all of her books give you a personal first-hand look at these historical women and the challenges they faced.

It was okay. An easy read for when you are bored

This fantastic story by Caroline Meyer tells the story of Catherine of Aragon. I enjoyed this book because Meyer describes thoroughly the hardships and emotions of Catherine. A must read for historical fiction fans.

Just got this book and basically like it. I've been working with C++ since 1990s when Borland released their C++ IDE.One quibble is the explanation of inherited C features before presenting C++ replacements. I'd say the order should be reversed. Another is an initialization example of "int* x = nullptr;" which is correct but I'd prefer showing it as "int* x{};" which is shown a chapter or so later. Nothing wrong but these are like fingernails on a chalkboard. If you're a pro you'll gloss over these but newbies might be mislead.

I was little bit upset that author exclude chapter dedicated to inter process communication approaches, for example SOAP, XML RPC and other modern ones. In the 1st edition even CORBA was mentioned, but in this one nothing related to this important topic.Also quality of book paper would be better.But this only my first oppinion without any estimation of existent content of the book, because I had not enough time to red it.

This is a very thick book - over 1,000 pages - not something you will want to read on the subway on your daily commute. But it's good stuff. Just what this old (66-years-old) programmer needed to brush up on my C++, especially features of the C++17 standard. I like the way it emphasizes use of the Standard Library. I personally enjoy reading it at my desk at work - I find the writing very accessible but that may be because (I think) I am probably the target market: experienced programmer with more than a little exposure to C++ but not capable of writing this book myself.

There are things to like about this book. She weighs in at 1100 pages and covers topics as diverse as software design to what a pointer is.In the end, I am not sure whom this book is targeted at, but at the same time, I am confident that if I could retain some portion of the 1100 pages of material, I would probably be well armed. So we've arrived at what I think the zen of C++ is, which is that it is aimed at too many interests--and this is not the fault of the author of this book. Logically it follows any book attempting to cover such diverse interests, must itself meander in its structure.One could say the book covers too much, or too little. These are matters of opinion.

Note: This is the fourth edition; the reviews here mix the different editions, which makes it harder for you to assess this one. Check the dates of the reviews.This book is written for folks who already know how to program, and is not an intro to programming in C++. It cautions as well that it's not even a book on learning C++ for programmers, although the first 70 pages will considerably help getting you up to speed. Included are heads-up for C programmers to note. In the ideal, C++ is a superset of C, meaning that any C program was also a C++ program, but over time that ideal has eroded, so it's good to know how to do things in a current version of C++. This book covers C++17, the version from 2017, so it's current.I think I might be in the target audience for this book, which is to say that I have written some small C++ programs in the past, but would like to become a good C++ programmer. This will be a bit of a journey and I'm just at the start of it (and it's a background/hobby thing for me), so I can't yet tell you that this book was great for me, but so far, I think it's just what I wanted.Source code for the examples in the book is available online, as mentioned at the end of the intro.If you search online for "Professional C++ 4th Edition", you can easily go to the wrox site and find a table of contents, and excerpts, which include the entirely of Chapter 1 (aka "Excerpt 2"). This will probably give you a good idea as to whether this book is for you. Also slightly tedious, but you can navigate to the available source code from this site.
